I just recently had a very similar problem with my 98 Ford Contour SE V6 . The tranny would occasionally drop in and out of gear and then up-shift real hard while driving around town . And while on the highway it would down shift and then slam into overdrive and it did this repeatedly . It would not stay in overdrive. So I brought it to Advance Auto Parts and they scanned my computer for free and it said I had a faulty Transmission Range Sensor ( TR Sensor). He couldn't find that part in his computer , so I got online and found that the TR is also known as a NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH. They had one in stock and I got it for about 47 bucks. I changed it out and now my tranny is working just fine. If your are going to change it, the TR is located on top of the tranny between the engine and the battery.You will need to put the shifter in neutral, pull the battery, remove the rubber boot between the airbox and air intake throttle body, disconnect the TR wiring harness, remove the 2-8mm bolts, and pull TR sensor up and off of the manual valve shaft, put the new TR in place leaving the bolts loose, make sure the 2 lines on the switch line up with each other ( This is the neutral position), Tighten bolts , put harness back on and put it all back together! I hope this will help you because it really did the trick for me.

Depends on the engine. If it is a 4 cylinder, it is not a job for the timid. The pump is behind the timing belt. It requires removing the valve cover, the drive and timing belt, the power stering pump and the drive shaft pulley. You'll need an impact wrench for the last item. You also have to ensure that the timing doesn't get changed when you remove the timing belt (however its a good time to change your belts). Overall the job takes about 6-8 hours. Get a good repair manual before starting. You'll not only need the new pump but also a new valve cover gasket. Do not overfill the system or youll end up with an air-blockage.

probably because there is a bad Ground-clean the socket where the bulb goes & coat w/vasoline & if there is metal on the socket housig ,clean that.That is IF U have 12 volts going 2 the socket-the tag light work with the running lights.

Hey Virginia==There is a relay in the relay center. If it just quit, it probaly isn't the motor as they generally start making noise before quiting completely. Yopu may want ot get a manual on your car from AUTOBOOKSONLINE.COM. Good luck, Joe

this is most easily done by lowering the front H frame. if no overhead hoist is available, jack vehicle up so the front wheels are about 4 inches off the ground and put jack stands in place in proper locations not on H frame. use jack on rear of H frame for safety and to lower slowly. loosen 2 front H frame bolts a couple of full turns. Loosen rear bolts slowly switching from side to side till desired arm room is reached. too far and H frame will fall until front bolts grab. support frame w/jack stands. remove nuts/bolts off of wires on rear of starter,noting where they go for reassembly. unbolt starter from trans housing. reverse to reinstall.

I believe its behind the exhaust manifold. You can see it looking up from underneath. I haven't changed mine yet. Anyone know if its possible to change without removing the manifold? Seems unlikely.

When your tail lights are out you can simply replace them. If they continue to blow, you may have an electrical problem.

According to the 1999 Ford Contour Owner Guide :

That would depend on what warning lights you are referring to. I'll need more information if I am to answer this fully.

1. Low transmission fluid. Check this first.

2. Old transmission fluid and clogged filter.

3. Worn clutches inside transmission.

The light is flashing because your trans is displaying that there is a fault with the trans itself. Need to have a qualified tech read the code from the trans I had the same problem. The tranny shop replaced the shift position sensor and the problem was solved. As stated above, you need a transmission shop to diagnose it with there diagnostics computer.

If the sensor itself isn't the problem, it could be the wiring (check the full length of the cabling all the way to the circuit board of the computer box with an ohmmeter), or the flywheel it reads could be cracked or broken. After that it could be the electronics within the computer module going bad. If the engine is losing power due to an intermittent cam position signal, you may be able to run it more reliably by disconnecting the sensor, but this may depend on the actual engine (research your particular model and engine to see if it can run without the sensor, or disconnect it and see what happens). One page I ran across says this will impact city mileage more than highway.

On a 2000 Ford Contour the fuel pump shut off switch ( inertia switch ) is in

the drivers footwell , by the drivers left foot , behind the kick panel ( there is

an access hole in the kick panel )

Check fuses? Could be a bad headlight switch/ Could be an open in dimmer rheostat?

Remove the back seat and seat back and get a loooong extension and ratchet and a 13 mm socket and tade the striker loose. Hard job but it gets you there.

My 99 SE has a trunck release inside the vehicle, drivers side. Check to see if your's does.

I'm not sure which engine you have, but, the 2.0 has the camshaft sensor on the drivers side of the engine, right in front of the distributer
