To Remove the head unit, there are a couple of ways, I have used both in my Lincoln Town Car and Ford Explorer, First off you could use 4 Jeweler's screwdrivers, and jam them in the holes and push towards the head unit while pulling out the unit, or purchase a Ford Radio Puller from Scosche, which where I live, I saw it at Walmart for a reasonable price (under $10), or you could easily make the two pullers out of a metal coat hanger, but when removing the unit, do not shove them in all of the way, or else they will become stuck.

connect the STI connector to ground (STI has yellow/BLACK wire, single connector, located near brake booster). timing indicator is located under hood. 2 bolts that hold distributor to head must be loose for adjustment. put a timing light on cylinder 1, and aim at lower crank pully. i suggest just to the rear of the motor mount in your way. adjust based on sticker, and tighten bolts. it might sound a little rough as the default timing is apporox. 10 degrees before TDC. remember to remove the ground from the STI plug and it will smooth out. hope this helps ...{ASMDEMON}

I don't know how long ago you asked this question, but the answer should be yes, you can use the '92 head for your '89 engine, but you need to check a few things first. First, visit your favorite auto parts store and see if the gaskets are the same. Keep in mind that a '92 head gasket kit may be different from an '89 kit, due to fuel injection vs. carburated engines, so check individual gaskets instead. While you're there, see if the camshafts are the same part number. Make sure the '92 head was made for a fuel pump. There should be a cover plate with two bolts that you'll need to remove to install your original fuel pump. If you are going to use the '92 camshaft, check that the cam has the extra lobe to operate the mechanical fuel pump. You'll need to use your original distributor, and also check the camshaft timing pulleys for similarities. That should be all you need to do.

Not a lot of fun. You might as well change the timing belt at the same time. Drain all the coolant. Jack up the car on the front passenger side. Remove the passenger side wheel. Put a jack under the oil pan. Detach the engine mounts on the passenger side of the car. Remove all external belts. Remove the upper timing belt cover bolts Lower the engine using the jack. Remove the water pump pulley. (3 bolts) Remove the upper timing belt cover. Disconnect the coolant line running across the front of the engine from the water pump. (2 bolts on a flange) Pull the timing belt. Pull the water pump. Installation is just reversed.

The fuel pump relay is under the drivers side of the dash , right by the steering column.

quite simply its because it is a very small capacity engine with only very modest amount of torque. Hence you will need to be in the "right" gear and right speed to get up the hill without slowing too much

12 volts DC.

I think the Festiva manual transmission uses ATF The auto parts store or the owners manual will tell you

I'm not sure on the 89 but on the 1990 model its up behind the computer by the left front firewall inside the car. Don't look for a typical flasher because it looks like a square relay. Check the one with three wires leading to it. Before you change it though just give it a couple of taps with your finger and it may start working again. I know mine did. Hope this helps you out. Unplug you battery for 20 to 25 minutes that should reset you computer.

you mite have to remove the speedo cable from the gearbox to top up the gearbox fluid, there should be a level mark on the base of the speedo cable when removed from gearbox. or there will be a bolt half way up the gearbox abut 23 or24mm in size, you will have to remove this and pour gearbox fluid in there until it begings to come out that hole. hope this helps.

The fuel pump is in the gas tank but its not hard to get out. Here is how to do that.

Note: Remove as much fuel as you can from the tank before starting this and this time actually unplug the negative terminal of your battery, This is gas in a small space, don't mess around.

1. Fold down your back seat, then fold it again so that it's lifted to the back of your front seats.

2. Pull the carpeting back away, to reveal the silver colored plate.

3. Remove the 4 screws, and you will see 2 Gas lines going into the tank.

4. Remove the gas lines and plug them so no vapor or gas can come out, and unplug the connector going into the tank.

5. Remove the screws and pull the assembly out. Careful not to damage or bend the fuel sending unit. You will have to turn the assembly and twist it to get it out but it will come out.

When adjusting valve clearances on a 1997 Ford Festiva, inlet clearance is 0.20 mm/exhaust clearances are 0.30 mm. These specs are for models before 11/96 or try 0.50 after this date. Check your rocker cover for a sticker which denotes a newer engine. In that case be sure to check specs. In addition, if the Festiva has a 1.5 motor, the valves are hydraulic therefore need no adjusting. If they sound noisy, attempt a good cleaning with a market approved oil/kerosene but most likely they'll have to be replaced.

Fuel relay is found under the dash next to the clutch pedal.

Most likely a bad vacuum modulator or no or little vacuum reaching the modulator. Check to see if there is any vacuum going to the "can looking thing" on top of the trans. It may also be a broken or misadjusted T.V. cable going from the throttle valve to the trans. (if it has one i cant remember) Take it to an actual TRANSMISSION mechanic they cost more per hour but less likely to hear the all too common "it needs a new trans".

Unless this is non-American, the Festiva's last year was 1993. Otherwise the fuel pump is in the gas tank. The name was switched to "Aspire", along with a complete redisign in 1994
