Drain the radiator, take the top hose loose from the housing, remove the bolts in the housing and pull it off. Lo and behold, there's the thermostat. When you get the new one, get a new gasket for it too. OOPS, I was looking at the question below yours about replacing the thermostat on another car. You'll have to take the water pump pulley bolts out, remove the timing cover and belt and then you can access the water pump. You'll have to remove the timing belt too so you might want to put a new one on while you're in there. It's a pretty nasty job and if you've never done this before, you may want to take it to a QUALIFIED mechanic and let them do it. The big bolt on your crank pulley should be 17mm if you're going to do it yourself.

I just found this myself and want to get it out so even if you already found it, the next poor dumb sot won't have to look so hard. It is behind the radio in the center console instrument stack on the drivers side. It's pretty easy to pop out the surround, disconnect the wires and then 4 screws hold in the stereo mount. It's still not easy to pull out as it is held on by a metal bar. They want to charge a lot of labor for finding this thing!

There is a hole in the sprocket that has to line up with a notch in the front bearing cap. This will be TDC. I just hope you had it on compression stroke when you took it off. Otherwise it'll be 180 degrees out of time and won't start. If that happens you can either remove it and rotate the crank and cam 180 degrees until you marks line up again or remove the distributor and rotate it 180 and re-install it.

Looking from the top of the engine compartment on the passenger side you will see the idler pulley with a mounting/locking bolt which attaches the pulley and the tension adjusting point immediately above it. Loosen the pulley locking bolt by turning counter clockwise. Relieve belt tension by turning the adjuster bolt counter clockwise. Remove the belt and pulley. Replace in the reverse order.

Unplug the wire connector from the bulb, pull off the big black round rubber water seal, jiggle the metal locking pin (kinda like a mousetrap) to get it to open, then pull out the bulb. (On the passenger side, you probably need to unbolt the fuse box first to be able to reach). Installing the headlight is the same process in reverse. Make sure to put the water seal back on in the correct orientation (there's a little line that should be on the top). Takes maybe 10 minutes. GE 9003 HB2 bulb, can find at Walmart and elsewhere.

I own a 1995 Geo Prism and i just finished taking care of this problem. The engine light usually means either your battery or alternator is not operating properly. I am a member of AAA auto club so I used up one of my 4 towing allowances for the year to have them do a no cost check of my battery and alternator. Their analizer showed that my alternator was not putting out enough juice and as a result it was draining on my battery whenever I was using the car. 1993-1997 Prisms have Delco GM or a Toyota Nippon (the word has more letters to it but I forget them) brand alternator. Miner needed the Delco brand so I had to spend $243.00 to have a rebuilt alternator replaced. Going on line I have found out that these years of Prisms have a lot of alternator break downs. This is my second alternator replacement. The only other two items I have ever replaced are the starter and radio. Otherwise the car has been an excellent auto. I have 89,000 miles on it.
