There are several possibilities. One is a bad HDMI cable and the the second is possibly the HDMI connector on the TV/DVD player end is loose.

Other possible causes are that a lot of TV's use a separate HDMI input module and those will frequently go bad. That will require a replacement.

Another possibility (especially on some model Samsung sets where the HDMI cable plugs in, is that the HDMI connector in the TV actually breaks itself loose from the circuit board. That too, will require a replacement "main board" in the TV. Big if you don't have an extended warranty plan.

Let me elaborate a little more than a simple "yes". HD DVDs will, as of November, 2007, only play on a device that has the "HD DVD" logo somewhere on the device. Currently, Toshiba is the biggest manufacturer of HD DVD players; also, the XBOX 360 has a separate, external HD DVD drive that can be purchased for around $180.

PS3s will NOT play HD DVDs. The PS3 is made by Sony, which is devoted to the main competing high definition format to HD DVD, and that is BLU RAY. Unlike the XBOX, the PS3 comes with the Blu-Ray player already installed. Just as Blu-Ray players will not play HD DVDs, the same goes for HD DVD players; they won't play BLU-Ray disks.
