J C Higgins Firearms

The J.C. Higgins trade name was used by Sears, Roebuck & Company of Chicago from 1946 to 1962 on firearms and other sporting goods.

Arms bearing this tradename were manufactured by a variety of American gunmakers.

The 16 gauge was made by Marlin, the .410 by Harrington & Richardson. The .22 by Savage/Stevens. Assuming all guns are fully functional but not in like-new condition, they are worth about $80, $150, and $100.

583 on a Sears Roebuck gun means it was manufactured by Hi Standard. Bolt action shotguns aren't very popular, so I would say it is worth no more than $100.

A single shot bolt action 20 gauge might be worth around 65-75 dollars in good shape.

"As a matter of fact, he was. John Higgins began his career at Sears in 1898. He worked his way up the corporate ladder to take charge of the headquarters office bookkeepers before retiring in 1930. He died in 1950. During discussions of possible brand names for a new line of Sears sporting goods, Higgins� name was proposed. He gave his consent and, because he had no middle name, the "C" was added for effect. As far as we can determine, the J.C. Open the bolt, hold the trigger to the rear and remove the bolt. Remove the large screw on the bottom of the stock and separate the barrelled action from the stock. That's as far as you need to go.

I have a JC Higgins model 60 in pristine condition, and it it worth, supposedly, around $150. But, it is a GREAT gun, and to me, worth a whole lot more. It was the first gas-operated semi-auto shotgun on the market, and kicks a lot less than a newer gas-operated Remington semi-auto than I've got. I'll never part with it. I believe you have a JC Higgins model 101.1 This should be a single shot 12 ga. It was made by Savage as the Savage model 94. They were made between 1926 and 1945

Maybe you are trying to load the wrong cal. bullet! The Mauser is desigend to only feed from the internal magazine. The extractor claw catches the rim of the cartridge as it rides upward from the magazine. If a bullet is in the chamber, the claw of the extractor will not go over the rim of the cartridge thus not letting the bolt not to close. Trying to force the bolt close in this situation will cause damage to the extractor.

Good question. The Blue Book Store Brand Cross Over List says the 583.20 is a High Standard Flight King and 583.17 a High Standard but no model name or number is given. A range of Sears ID numbers will often be the same gun sold in a different year, but in this case there is a .18 and .2 between these models and they are Harrington & Richardson guns. I'd still bet that both these guns are the Flight King. actually 583 17 &583 20 Were made by high standard They are the known as the sears model 10 bolt action repeating shotgun the 583 17 was made in 1949 the 583 20 series was made in 1952 both gun are almost identical the 583 20 has some minor improvements in any case both gun are based on the the H&R 120 and have nothing to do whats so ever with High Standard model 200 flighte king pump shotgun

Blue Book of Gun Values

You're probably looking at $130-$150 depending on the condition. A good condition one with good bluing and a good condition wooden stock being at the higher end of the price range.

I just inherited my Dads J.C. Higgins Model 50 583.91 and I can remember saving my money,along with my brothers,and mother to get him that gun. We bought it in 1950 for 88.00 dollars, To answer your question ,no it did not have any frills no engraving no cheek plate,it didnt even have a recoil pad. I believe you are asking about a Sears, JC Higgins C02 Air Rifle. If so, it was made by Crosman (model 180) for sears under the JC Higgins name, It has a wood stock. Mfg first in 1956-59 and then again with a die cast trigger housing from 1962-67.

In Prime 100% condition it is worth $180 but from what you say it's more like 20% condition at about $55.

Your shotgun 583 .22 was made in 1952 by High Standard Manufacturing for Sears. These are very good shotguns it is worth about 100 to 150 dollars depending on condition and who's buying it.

These guns have been out of production for many years, and finding NEW stock will be a mtter of luck. Numrich (gunpartscorp) has the .410 stocks (used) for about $70, but is sold out of other gauges. Sorry.
