What could be wrong if you just changed the fuel filter on a 1998 Mazda protege but now it is running very rough and will not stay idling?

Why did you change the filter? Was it really bad? Could you 'see' debris in it or couldn't blow thru it? Pump may be going out if your original problem for changing the filter has remained(not enough fuel to engine), can be checked by taking off coil wire to cap(BE CAREFUL OF SPARKS), turning the engine with fuel line aimed into can and putting your finger over end of line to check the pressure. You shouldn't be able to stop it very easily. Dokter Denney

How do you change the thermostat on a 1994 Mazda Protege?

The thermostat is located under the housing at the end of the upper hose that goes from the radiator to the engine. Drain the radiator then remove the hose at the thermostat housing. Unbolt the two bolts that hold down the housing and pull out the thermostat (be sure to notice which end of the thermostat points into the engine. Installation is reverse , making sure that thermostat points in the same direction. Usually, the instructions of how it fits are printed on the package of the thermostat. Good luck.

What is the transmission fluid used in a 2003 Mazda protege 5?

Type M-V or equivalent. (eg. Dexron III) per the Mazda protege5 service manual (section 5 chapter 17 page 18).

Member comment: M-V is a Ford specification for automatic transmission oil, more commonly known as " Mercon V," usually spoken as "Mercon Five." Many multi-purpose automatic transmission oil brands do not meet this standard, especially some of the petroleum base oils. It is important to read the label and look for compliance to this standard. Many of the information labels on multi-purpose transmission oil state that (on a given brand) it is not suitable for use in transmissions requiring Mercon V. Others, such as Mobil1, are formulated to be suitable where Mercon V is required, although it may have been blended and marketed to appeal to a larger installed base of automobile transmissions.

On a Mazda and many other import vehicles, a drain plug is present. This will allow the draining of about one third of the transmission. If the transmission oil is changed regularly, there is no need to remove the oil pan and the oil filter (often a wire mesh screen). It is good practice to replace the aluminum-sealing washer on the drain plug each time.

If the oil is changed regularly, the oil pan, the oil filter, and all the inner parts of the transmission will stay clean, eliminating the need to remove the oil pan. If the oil is seriously aged or heavily soiled, removal of the pan may be sensible.

If possible, change the oil once a year or every 12-15k miles, whichever occurs first. Doing so will extend the service life of the transmission and your chances of a failed or prematurely worn transmission will be dramatically reduced.

How do you replace the serpentine belt for a 1993 Mazda Protege?

you have to loosen a bolt on the front of the AC compressor, I think its a 12mm. You loosen it and the the AC compressor will then be able to rotate downward, sometimes the compressor gets stuck with age and you might need to tap it down with a mallet. Once the compressor rotates downward the tension in the belt will be gone and you can change the belt. Then tighten the same bolt until you achieve the desired tension

Why would a 98 Mazda protege have no brake lights?

NO Brake Lights
Because neither brake light works, it is unlikely that it's due to burnout of the bulb filaments, all at the same time.

Without doing a "hands on troubleshooting" of the brake light circuit no one can tell you what specific defect is causing the problem.

However, here are some of the possible causes you need to check for:
  • The fuse for that circuit has "blown."
  • Brake light switch mounting is not properly adjusted.
  • A connector plug somewhere in the circuit has become "unplugged," or loose.
  • A conductor [wire] somewhere in the circuit has been cut, broken, "pinched," or pulled apart.
  • Corrosion has occurred inside any one or more of the connector plugs, or at any connection/splice, in the circuit. Corrosion can "block" the flow of electrical current just the same as if a wire were cut.
  • The brake light switch has become defective [this is usually the "last" thing to fail].

There are probably a few more that I can't think of at the moment. Good luck!

How do you keep the horn from blaring in the middle of a cold night on a 92 Mazda Protege you can't simply disconnect because of an igntion Interlock Device?

The red flag that answers this question is "in the middle of a cold night." Inside the pad in the center of the steering wheel are the contacts which close the horn circuit when the pad is depressed. Until someone depresses the pad, the contacts are held apart by a piece of foam. The foam deteriorates with age, and "in the middle of a cold night," which is when the horn blares, the foam further shrinks, allowing the contacts to close the switch and sound the horn.

Possible solutions:

1) Replace old foam with new foam, and you may get another 15 or so years normal service, depending on how often you further deteriorate the foam by pressing on it.

2) For a temporary fix, remove the fuse. The problem with this is that you will now have no brake lights, not only a ticketable violation in any jurisdiction, but dangerous as well. The fusebox layout was obviously designed by a committee, as it is inconceivable that any one person could have been so stupid as the run a horn and brakelights on the same fuse circuit.

3) Cut the wire, or if you can find it, disconnect the horn wire at a junction point. The horn itself (in a '93 Protege, and, I'm guessing, in a '92 as well), is located in the right front fender area. Open the hood, look down there, and you'll see it. Unless you plan on having your vehicle inspected by the law, you don't need your horn anyway. It is a required piece of equipment where I live, but I never use it anyway.

How do you replace a freeze plug in a 1991 Mazda Protege?

1998 Mazda protege cylinder head bolts torque you bought haynes manual and it tells you torque head bolts to 1215lbs then tighten 45degthen 90deg what you need to know do you turn bolts 45then another?

Many of the newer head bolts are tightened all bolts to a specific torque spec then tighten all bolts another 90 degrees or whatever the manufacturer recommends and possibly even another step. The idea is to tighten in stages so that you do not warp the head.

What is size Mazda Protege 2000 wiper blade?

The 2000 Mazda Protege wiper blade sizes are 21" drivers and 19" passenger side wiper blades. See Sources and Related Links below for more information. Since there are over 22 different wiper arm attachments, do not buy wipers just by length only. Be sure to lookup exact wiper blade part numbers by vehicle make, model and year for the brand wiper you decide to purchase. This ensures correct length AND correct attachment.
