What is the hold button for on your shift lever of your automatic 1992 Mazda protege lx?

Its a old button for a certain gear. Say you are in overdrive but going up a hill and you need to down shift, hit that button and the car will automatically downshift until you release that button. The same thing applys as when going down a hill, you will want to keep the car at a lower gear so not as to use the brakes as much. It will slow you down automatically.

sounds like a small block chevy...the best fix is to replace the seals. they make tools that allow you to pump air into a cylinder so you can repalce the valve seal without removing the head.

How do you change the thermostat on a 2001 Mazda Protege?

Romove the upper water heater (coolant) hose. Pull two bolts out. Becarefull not to lose the nuts they tend to fall. You can use high heat sealant to replace gasket (gold tube). Let sealant sit for 10 minutes or until it gets a skin on it, and reassemble. Don't for get to buy coolant to replace what is lost. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Replace thermostat. DO NOT remove the upper radiator hose. Follow the bottom radiator hose ( if you are standing in front of the car facing the windshield it's on the bottom left of radiator ), there are two bolts you need to remove. The thermostat sits in there. It should take about 10 minutes total to remove the old and replace with a new one. I followed the above information and ended up removing way too many pieces to name to get the housing at the end of that hose open.

If you have washed your car recently or if you had lots of rain, it may have leaked in from the firewall of just leaked in from the vents, try not to run your fan on high when getting the car washed of heavy rain. Hope this helps.

When should the timing belt be changed on a 2002 Mazda Protege 5?

The timing belt should be changed every 168,000 kms (105,000 miles) on Mazda Protege 5, not 100,000 kms (60,000 miles). Also these engines DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshaft) is INTERFERENCE motor, which means when that belt skips few teeth or breaks, kiss your valves goodbye. You'll need a new cylinder head, big $$$.

Might as well do your water pump at the same time and serpentine belt.

What could be wrong if you just changed the fuel filter on a 1998 Mazda protege but now it is running very rough and will not stay idling?

Why did you change the filter? Was it really bad? Could you 'see' debris in it or couldn't blow thru it? Pump may be going out if your original problem for changing the filter has remained(not enough fuel to engine), can be checked by taking off coil wire to cap(BE CAREFUL OF SPARKS), turning the engine with fuel line aimed into can and putting your finger over end of line to check the pressure. You shouldn't be able to stop it very easily. Dokter Denney

How do you change the thermostat on a 1994 Mazda Protege?

The thermostat is located under the housing at the end of the upper hose that goes from the radiator to the engine. Drain the radiator then remove the hose at the thermostat housing. Unbolt the two bolts that hold down the housing and pull out the thermostat (be sure to notice which end of the thermostat points into the engine. Installation is reverse , making sure that thermostat points in the same direction. Usually, the instructions of how it fits are printed on the package of the thermostat. Good luck.

What is the transmission fluid used in a 2003 Mazda protege 5?

Type M-V or equivalent. (eg. Dexron III) per the Mazda protege5 service manual (section 5 chapter 17 page 18).

Member comment: M-V is a Ford specification for automatic transmission oil, more commonly known as " Mercon V," usually spoken as "Mercon Five." Many multi-purpose automatic transmission oil brands do not meet this standard, especially some of the petroleum base oils. It is important to read the label and look for compliance to this standard. Many of the information labels on multi-purpose transmission oil state that (on a given brand) it is not suitable for use in transmissions requiring Mercon V. Others, such as Mobil1, are formulated to be suitable where Mercon V is required, although it may have been blended and marketed to appeal to a larger installed base of automobile transmissions.

On a Mazda and many other import vehicles, a drain plug is present. This will allow the draining of about one third of the transmission. If the transmission oil is changed regularly, there is no need to remove the oil pan and the oil filter (often a wire mesh screen). It is good practice to replace the aluminum-sealing washer on the drain plug each time.

If the oil is changed regularly, the oil pan, the oil filter, and all the inner parts of the transmission will stay clean, eliminating the need to remove the oil pan. If the oil is seriously aged or heavily soiled, removal of the pan may be sensible.

If possible, change the oil once a year or every 12-15k miles, whichever occurs first. Doing so will extend the service life of the transmission and your chances of a failed or prematurely worn transmission will be dramatically reduced.
