The SE had the DX and LX drivetrain, that is to say the 1.5L engine mated to either an automatic, or 5-speed manual transmission. The was the equivalent of the American ES model. I had the same problem. It is caused by a loose/bad connection between the a/c switch and the relay to the blower/compressor. If you remove the radio, you will find what looks like a "plug" that has a number of wires running into it (the relay), that connects to the a/c switch in the dash. If you unplug this relay the a/c stops working completely. I unplugged the relay and with a very small screwdriver bent the edges of the connectors inside it on all the wires, to make sure that each of the wires was making good contact with the metal "tabs" on the a/c dash switch. If you pull off the dial in the dash and remove the plastic nut (a little tricky) you can take the switch all the way out of the dash and plug it straight into the relay to test the connections and make sure they are solid and firm. I had tried everything, including replacing the switch, with no luck, but this solution has solved the problem. The a/c now works on 1, 2, 3 and 4. Good luck! I had the same problem. How do you repair the intake manifold gasket on a Mazda Protege 1999?
You drain coolant, mark and remove all hoses.
Remove 8 bolts or so for intake.
Pry intake back one inch or so, so just over studs.
Scrape the old intake gasket off.
Slip new intake gasket on.
Tighten and torque the bolts.
Add coolant, that was drained off.
Verify the fix by checking engine vacuum at idle...15PSI, and steady.
Turn signal/Flasher relay is under dash on drivers side, if you have a manual transmission is is almost directly above the clutch pedal. It is a gray colored box about 2 inches wide by 4 inches long. Just grab hold of it and pull it straight out of holder, should say flasher/turn signal on relay. FYI it can only be bought at the dealer! all auto part stores here in VA said it is a dealer item so imagine it is costly, i went to junk yard myself and got it for $7..Hope this helps.
1) Underneath the brake cylinder, and partially blocked by a horizontal spring, is a steel assembly that runs horizontally from one brake shoe to the other.
2) At one end of this assembly, you will see what looks a curved, serrated piece of metal poking toward you.
3) Relieve the spring tension on that end of the assembly (by pulling the adjacent brake shoe toward the side), and you should be able to push the serrated piece of metal toward the center of the car so that it is almost flush with the assembly.
4) This will allow the slotted blocks that push against the brake shoes to move closer together, creating enough clearance to allow the brake drum to slide on to the mounting bolts.
5) If you have trouble relieving the spring tension, following are two additional techniques:
6) VERY IMPORTANT: That serrated piece of metal that you pushed is the automatic adjuster for the rear brakes. So after you've got everything put back together, back up a few times, gently applying the brakes each time. This will auto-adjust the rear brake shoes.
7) The related link (below) from a service manual for a 1995 Mazda MX6 has a diagram of rear drum brakes that appears identical to the Protege setup. The piece that I refer to as a "steel assembly" is shown in the diagram as the "operating lever assembly."
