with the standard front brake set in a front wheel drive vehicle. Jack up and block the tire, or better place it on jack stands. Remore the tires as normal. you should be able to see the brake rotor and caliper. look for the mounting bolts. usually two. loose them. the brake pads are usually secured by pressure strip over the top of the pads. . Things to know. the brake system is a pressurized system. Get a brake line plug and disconnect the brake line from the back of the caliper. use the plug so brake fluid won't go all over. clean up any mess imediately. Don't let it get on paint. It will strip it. Push on the back side of the caliper with steady pressure. use your finger/hand first. screw driver is not the best idea. may damage the caliper. Once the brake cylinder is separated there should be enough room for you to slip the pads out. reinstallation is the reverse. When completed you must bleed the brakes to ensure that all air has been removed form the system. If not you will have pulling to one side when you put on the brakes, and have a soft fell on the brake petal. If it is possible the best thing to do is get the manual for your vehicle and follow the directions. most manuals come with both explanations and pictures. It is also a good idea if you have a digital camera to take pictures before you start and through out the repair. The will give you a good reference for reassembly. hope it helps. duboff

There is a dipstick in the engine compartment to check the transmission fluid. Read the dipstick and it will tell you whether to check it "with engine running in park or in neutral or engine off or whatever". It should also tell you the recommended fluid. Fill it through the same dipstick tube. They make funnels just for that. DO NOT OVERFILL.

And it's a hard little bugger to find. Mine is directly under a tube between the battery and engine. Unless you stand off to the side you can't see it. Once you do it's fairly easy to find.

I am no mechanic, but I have a 1999 Nissan Maxima and I recently did some work on my EGR valve. When you pop open the hood, look at the side of the engine on your right (driver's side). Underneath all the air intake stuff that connects to your air filter is the EGR valve. Mine has a grey plastic top with an electrical connector attached to it (this top is about an inch and a half to two inches in diameter), a middle section below this that is made from a silvery metal with two rubber hoses plugged into it, and below this a bottom section with a metal pipe maybe three quarters of an inch in diameter connected to it. The metal pipe curves around and goes back behind the engine. There are two bolts that the valve is mounted on. To remove the valve, first you have to get a bunch of hoses and stuff out of the way to expose it, then disconnect the hoses and electrical connector from the valve, then disconnect the metal pipe connected to the base, then remove the two nuts on the two bolts. There is a gasket between the EGR valve and the engine which you will have to replace. It cost me less than two dollars. This also worked on my 1996 Maxima which means it's good for earlier and likely newer Maxima's.

completely correct. along with 1 plug though. I believe it is directly under the throttle body. Held it by a couple 10 or 12mm bolts. Make sure to replace the gasket. on the exhaust manifold

Trouble code P0170 means:Fuel trim malfunction (bank 1)

pat itself is about $25. Very eazy to replace. Take off the passanger side wheel, the sensor is located on the back side of the engine right at the botton. You will need a 8mm socket wrench to take of off. You can get to it through the opening for the axle.

From the look of things theis car does not have a fuel filter. The only filter that has to do with the fuel seems to be in the fuel tank. A 2001 Mazda Protege (actually, all models from 1999-2003 including the DX, LX, ES, Mazdaspeed, and Protege 5) does not have an inline fuel filter. The only fuel filter it has is a "strainer" or a "screen", which looks like a nylon mesh "sock". This strainer is connected to the fuel pump, located in the gas tank. Although this fuel strainer does not require periodic replacement, it is recommended that it be changed if you are replacing the fuel pump.

Open the hood of the car, and on the underside of the hood itself, or somewhere in the engine compartment will be the VECI (Vehicle Emission Control Information) label. This label is required by law to say certain things.

One of the things it always says is: "This vehicle conforms to U.S. EPA light duty emission requirements for the 1991 [or whatever] model year new light duty vehicles." If you have no labels on the underside of your hood, the car has been in an accident, and the hood was replaced with an aftermarket hood.

Also look in the driver's door frame area. There will usually be a label/plate there that says the model year, sometimes with the month. If the month is 08 or later, figure it's the next model year. So, 09/1989 will be 1990 model year.

The changeover can go as far back as June on some cars. A car will generally not undergo massive mechanical redesign for about 4 years, but the styling, (mainly front and back end) tend to change every 2 years)

Then start looking at autos.msn.com or edmunds.com for your model year. You will see what are called "trim levels" with names such as DX, LX, SE, MAZDASPEED, and so on. 1990's SE = 1991-1994 DX = base/cheapest model. Trim levels are basically packages of features that add luxury to a car. Start looking on your vehicle for these trim level names. Usually they will be on the back of the car or front fenders. They can be covered up or missing if the car was in an accident and re-painted, however. If you can't find the trim name, You can still look for other clues, such as engine type: The top of the engine (valve cover) will usually mention engine features such as SOHC, DOHC, 16 valves, engine size (1.8 for example), and so on. Other major features to compare are transmission: manual or automatic? Air conditioning, cruise control, power windows/locks, power mirrors, sunroof. If a car has no air conditioning, it's a pretty safe bet it's a base (cheapest) trim level car. If it has a sunroof, it's a pretty safe bet it's the highest trim level car, unless all trims have a sunroof (luxury car), but again, compare to autos.msn.com to be sure.

I know where it is but can you show me the labeling of the fuse box itself?

Well, I have a 2002 Protege 5, (almost identical) and the snow tires I'm looking at buying are 195/55 R15.

It has a 2.0L L 1991 CC L4.

In my 2002 LX I found it to be the 20A fuse in the fuse compartment inside by the driverside door. in the owners manual it is listed as "DISCRIP: #2 (H/CLN) - PROTECTED COMPONENT For protection of various circuits." The top row second in. If this isn't it get a pair of pliers and gently pull the fuses- one at a time- and see if they are burnt out.

Sorry guys but from experance with 2.0 DOHC 16 valve that blinking hold light means your transmission is about to stop working with mine it started blinking and with in a half an hour of driven the tranny breaks and you loose all gears and the only way to fix is a new transmission or to have it completely rebuilt and a new one from Mazda is about $2100
