Mazda Protege

I have a 1998 Mazda Protege that kept throwing the belt. 5 times in 1 month. Come to find out the pulley on the air conditioner compressor would stop working sometimes. We found this out only by experimenting because I had had it to the shop several times to make sure it was lined up correctly. My brother suggested bypassing the air unit to see if the belt would stay. 2 years, and the same belt is still on.

the fuel pump is in the gas tank itself. You have to remove the back seat to get at it.

The thermostat is located on the front left of the engine housed in the lower radiator hose that attaches to the engine. You remove the thermostat cover which exposes the thermostat gasket and thermostat. You must disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the fresh air duct, remove the air cleaner, drain the engine coolant before removing the thermostat cover.

first drain then undo clips holding it in then then undo hoses put in new one do up hoses then replace clips then fill with 50/50 coolant and water

Overheating can cause some serious engine problems. Once the check engine light is on you need to use an engine diagnostic code reader to find out what's wrong. You can borrow, rent or buy the code scanner from most auto parts retailers.

could be a bad radiator i know it sounds odd but the the trany fluid is pumped through the radiator or u could just be leakin fluid check it out and check the radiator

Yes, I just did the other day actually. Surprisingly, the belt that goes around the alertnator/water pump actually fits around just the power steering and engine (without going around the ac compressor). Not sure why people spend money on bypass pulleys when you can just use a shorter belt.

One of the components driven by the belt or the tensioner has bearings that are going bad or the unit itself like alternator, power steering pump, or water pump are going bad. If it has a manual tensioner it is possible that it was overtightened as well.

Which one of the sensors cause the car to putt putt once the car has gotten hot on a 1995 Mazda Protege?

I had a similar problem on my 2002 Protege....would hesitate and feel like it would almost stall out... ended up needing a tune up and replacing some wires. not a major repair, cost me about $300

plugs/wires, fuel pump, fuel filter, maf, bad fuel pressure reg. depends on what it drives like, hard to answer without driving it try replacing the MAF(mass air flow) sensor, that is a main cause of stalls at complete stops. if you can do it yourslef, it wont cost too much, juts buy the aprt, if you cant, it will cost over $300. the MAf sensor is located right after the air filter, try cleaning it with rubbing alcohol before you replace it, if that doesnt work, then replace it try replacing the MAF(mass air flow) sensor, that is a main cause of stalls at complete stops. if you can do it yourslef, it wont cost too much, juts buy the aprt, if you cant, it will cost over $300. the MAf sensor is located right after the air filter, try cleaning it with rubbing alcohol before you replace it, if that doesnt work, then replace it

On the bottom of the engine near the passanger firewall there are two air conditioning lines blocking your way (close to the axel), unscrew the holder and move the lines out of the way (carefully) and you should be able to remove the alternatior without issue.

On the 1998-2002 Mazda 626 v6 the Egr valve is located on the back right side toward the bottom of the engine. It is located in a very hard area to get to between the engine and the firewall. If you take out the intake system and the throttle control you can see it more clearly. there are two coolant lines connected to it. There are some picture of it at dallinwood.com/mazda_626.htm

To change the oil pan gasket on a 1999 Mazda Protege DX, remove the bolts holding it to the bottom of the motor. Take the old gasket off and clean the area where the gasket sits with a gasket cleaner. Place a gasket sealer on the outside lip, then put in the new gasket. Carefully replace the pan and tighten the bolts, being careful not to let the gasket overlap itself.

Camsaft Carrier cover bolts should be torqued to 72 Inch Pounds. That is for both the OHC and OHV engine. I looked this up in the manual to double check.

The fuel pump is inside the fuel tank, the tank needs to be dropped and disconnected to get to the fuel pump to be replaced. Possible probelems are: straps that secure the gas tank have corroded connectors and may need replaced, not a common part at a parts store, may need to be ordered ($50 for the pair) fuel pump seal may need replaced, cheap insurance to place anyway, $15 for part. Strainer should be ok, but if you had a bad tank of gas or worse, lots of contamination from vandals or tank corrosion, $15 -25 depending on brand of pump. Fuel pump itself, is the expensive part, $130 for generic 1 yeat warranty, to $409 for the 4WD version with filter. Labor depends on the mechanic, and/or the shop. Dealers cost more but can be quick, parts will be more expensive there. local independants will be cheaper, but you will pay more for the parts, not as much as dealer, but more than your cost at the parts store. Mechanically, it is not a hard fix, drop the gas tank, (4 bolts) remove the filler hose, a clamp or two, remove the fuel pump and replace it and strainer from the top of the tank, (a few more bolts) , remount tank (don't forget the filler hose) and you are golden. Here's the real problem-full tank of gas. 12 gallon tank at around 8 lbs per gallon is 96 lbs plus tank etc, siphon as much gas as you can out into safe containers or you could be lucky and have a near empty tank, but the car has to be safely jacked up high enough to clear the tank once it is off the car and you need a way to lower and raise it safely. It still weighs more than you think. My advice, have your trusted repair shop do it, it is not worth hurting yourself, or damaging the fuel tank or not being able to finish the job cause you can't figure out how to get the tank back up! I would get an estimate, and shop around. If your shop will do it, buy the part yourself and let them do the labor.
