The Mazda 2.0 L is listed as a interfrence engine with a timing belt change listed at 105,000. I just changed my timing belt at 121,000. take the back seat out and there should be a thin metal plate with four screws in the middle of the car take that off then you will see the top of the gas tank take the 8 screws out of there and the pump is under that plate
It would be wise to do so, since you have to remove the timing belt et. al. to change the water pump. If you have to take one off,you might as well do both at the same time. If you're brave enough to take on a timing belt, then you might as well replace the water pump. It's 10 years old, so it's questionable how much it's got left.

I purchased an EGR valve for my 2000 Cavalier and couldn not find it either. So I went to autoparts house and they looked to no avail. Then went to dealer who also could not find it. Hmmmmmmm, alas it does not have one. Why? Well, it is my understanding that certain government vehicles do not require one. Was mine one of them. I don't know. But I can tell you that all EGR valves are bolted to the manifold, and for cavaliers it is typically on the drivers side of the engine. Good luck with this one.
Not all cars have an EGR valve, government or not. It depends on the engineering designs of how cool the engine runs, and how much NOx is produced under load. If not a lot is produced in the first place, the converter would likely take care of it nicely.

government has nothing to do with it. some of these engines with the pollution controls they were built with put out acceptable levels of nox and otrher gases low enough to not warrant the need of an egr valve.

The plastic latch is pretty cheap and breaks off after awhile. Grab the latch (the part you grab w/ a finger to open it)with a pair of pliers and snap it right off. The latch is all one piece so you will have to replace it anyway. Once the plastic pull has been snapped off you can insert a small screwdriver through the opening you see and push down and the glove box will open right up. The latch is held on from the inside with three screws, $29.95 from Mazda or cheaper from a junkyard....

How do you clean the EGR valve on a 2000 Mazda Protege?
The best way I've had a EGR cleaned (it was on a 1996 Dodge avenger, but EGR's work the same) was using a product called seafoam. The way to use it is to have someone work the gas (with the car running) to keep it from stalling, and slowly pour the Seafoam into a direct vacuum line to the intake manifold. It should smoke like crazy, so don't worry. Pour abour half the can in, then stop the engine after pouring. Let the car sit for about 5-10 min, then restart. Take it for a quick drive to get rid of the extra seafoam in the engine, and you should be okay. If the engine light doesn't go off, take it somewhere (advance auto parts) and have them delete the code.

How do you replace your heater core on a 1993 Mazda protege?
The A/C system must be discharged and the evaporator removed in order to service the heater core on these models. It is illegal for anyone to vent A/C refrigerant into the atmosphere. Refer tofor information on the A/C system.
- Take the vehicle to a EPA certified repair facility and have the A/C system refrigerant recovered.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
- In the engine compartment, disconnect the A/C lines at the firewall by removing the fitting fasteners.
- Disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall as well.
- Remove the instrument panel and dash assembly.
- Detach any electrical harness connections or cables from the heater and cooler units.
- Remove the cooler unit-to-firewall attaching nuts and pull the unit backwards and remove it.
- Remove the heater unit-to-firewall attaching nuts and remove the heater unit.
- Place the heater unit on a bench and separate the heater case halves by removing the fasteners (clips, screws and/or bolts).
- Remove the heater core from the case half.
- Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
