Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is a branch of engineering that encompasses the generation and application of heat and mechanical power and the design, production, and use of machines and tools. Mechanical engineering involves application of the principles of dynamics, control, thermodynamics and heat transfer, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, materials science, electronics, and mathematics.

How do you figure a 7 foot horizontal rolling offset?

A rolling offset is generally an offset requiring a change in 2 directions. Eg. A horizontal offset and a vertical change in elevation. There is additional information required to answer the question. What is the angle of the fittings being used for offset? 15 deg. 30. 45? What is the change in elevation?

If this is a flat (no change in elevation offset) using 45 deg., the offset dimension (7') is multiplied by 1.4142 which is the secant and cosecant of 45 deg.

The result 7 ' x 1.4142 = 9'-10 13/16"

Again, this result is for a flat run of pipe. If we have a rolling offset with a change in elevation of say 1'. We can use the Pythagorean theorem (A2 +B2 = C2)

The result would be (1')2 + (9'-10 13/16")2 = 98.99812 sq. ft.

The square root of 98.99812 is 9'-11 3/8"

What shape are rotor blades for a helicopter and why?

They are eliptical in shape with the leading edge having an airfoil shape, meaning curved across the top to create lift. The rear side of the blade is longer and narrower allowing the air to pass over it easier. It looks like a cross section of a airplane's wing for the full length of the blade.

Why call seamless pipe?

Most pipes are made by taking a strip of metal, rolling it up and then fusing the seam together. They're almost always weaker along the seam than anywhere else. There are ways of making pipes where the wall is a single piece that hasn't been welded shut. They're stronger , more expensive and they're called seamless.

How is steel an improvement over iron?

Steel is clean an has less impurities than iron, steel also has high alloys in it like chrome, vanadium an Molly to make stronger, take a hammer an hit a peace of steal then take that hammer an hit a peace of iron, the iron will dent.

It is lighter and stronger.

What did Charles Kettering invent?

Kettering Inventions * Electric cash register * Electric auto ignition and self-starter for automobiles first appeared on the 1912 Cadillac. Within a few years, Delco produced a complete starting, ignition and lighting system that is credited with the phenomenal rise of the automobile industry. * Spark plug * Freon for refrigerators and air conditioners. Ridgeleigh Terrace, Kettering's residence in Dayton, was the first air conditioned home in America. * Leaded gasoline * Quick drying paint for automobiles * Safety glass * Portable electric generator * Four-wheel brakes * Automatic transmission * Electric railway gate * First synthetic aviation fuel

What is Buses and what does it do?

Data bus - transfers data round system

address bus - CPU provides the addresses to where the data must be fetched, through this bus

control bus - timing and signals which control data flow in the system.

What is hydraulics and pmeumatics?

Hydraulics is the use of liquids to transmit power. Pneumatics is the use of gases (usually air) to transmit power.

What is the difference between P type and S type fuel injectors?

i think the only difference is hole dia of injectors. which also results into difference in operating pressure and through flow.Further combustion process varies accordingly.

Comparison between fluid coupling and torque converter?

They are of similar design, but a fluid coupling simply transmits torque (with some frictional loss), while a torque converter amplifies torque, similar to a reduction gear.

What is the UTS 304 stainless steel?

UTS of 304L Stainless Steel is 586MPa UTS of 304 Stainless Steel is 621MPa

Does load affects fuel consumption per hour of a diesel generator?

If the generator is to maintain the same rpm and power output, then a heavier load will increase the diesel consumption.

The revolutions per minute the generator runs will increase as the load increases, thereby resulting in an increase in diesel consumption to maintain the high rpm.

A Generator has a governor which attempts to maintain frequency at 60 Hz for North America. For the generator to increase the power output at the same frequency, the governor will increase the fuel and air to the engine. The fuel consumption will not be linear because of the curves associated with the particular engine. The fuel to KWH is know as the heat rate curve for the generator.

Is Shell Alvania Grease RL3 not suitable for DC motors?

Why not?

AC motors are usually run at constant and DC motors at veriable speeds.

Simply ac or dc motor type should not have any effect on bearings & grease.

Bearing type, operating temperatures, speed, load, duty etc. determine the suitable type of grease and regreasing intervals.

Most of the times motor manufacturers give the info on motor name plate if the motor bearings require regreasing. It is adviseable to always refer to motor or bearing manufacturer recommendations.

Shell Alvania RL3 is suitable for medium size motors (with ball bearings) running at 40C ambient temperatures.
