How do you lean fuel on 91 1.6 mercury capri... smells rich...?

If your 1991 Mercury Capri with a 1.6L engine smells rich, it may indicate that the engine is running too rich, meaning it's getting too much fuel relative to air. This could be due to a faulty fuel pressure regulator, a clogged air filter, or issues with the fuel injectors. Additionally, check for vacuum leaks that could affect the air-fuel mixture. Addressing these issues should help lean out the fuel mixture and reduce the rich smell.

Why will 1991 Mercury Capri will not start?

Won't-start symptomsYour car may not start for a number of reasons. The following list outlines the most common circumstances and tells you what action you can take to try to remedy each situation:
  • The car is silent when you turn the key in the ignition.Check the battery terminal cable connections. If they look very corroded, force the point of a screwdriver (with an insulated or wooden handle) between the connector and the terminal post and twist it to lodge it firmly. Then try to start the engine. If it starts, you need to clean or replace your cables.
  • The car makes a clicking noise but won't start. This sound usually means a dead battery. If not, check the wiring to and from the Answers.comfor a loose connection.
  • The car cranks over but won't start. Check the fuel supply to your engine. If that's okay, check whether the electrical spark is getting.
  • The engine starts but dies. If your car has a Answers.com, check your carburetor adjustment and your choke to see whether the choke is first closing and then opening. If you have Answers.comAnswers.com, you'll need professional help.
  • The car won't start on rainy days. Check inside the Answers.comAnswers.comfor dampness. If you find moisture, get some mechanic's solvent from your friendly service station - they use it to clean car parts - or buy an aerosol can of it at an auto supply store. To evaporate any dampness inside the distributor cap, turn the cap upside down and pour or spray some solvent into it. Swish it around and pour it out. Then dry the cap as best you can with a clean, lint-free rag and replace the cap.
Use only clean solvent; even a tiny speck of dirt can foul the points. Gasoline won't do because a spark can ignite gasoline fumes and cause an explosion or a fire.
  • The car won't start on cold mornings. For vehicles with carburetors, check the choke. Is it closed? Does it open? If you have fuel injection, you'll need to have a professional diagnose the cold-start problems.
  • The engine misses or hesitates during acceleration.Check the accelerator pump in the carburetor (if equipped), the spark plugs, the distributor, and the timing.
  • The engine knocks or pings. Check your timing; also check the octane rating of the fuel you're using. The owner's manual can tell you whether your vehicle needs regular unleaded or premium gasoline. Check the cooling system. Do a compression check on the engine Answers.com.
Jumping a startTo safely jump a start, follow these steps:

1. Take out your Answers.comAnswers.com.

It's a good idea to buy a set of jumper cables and keep them in the trunk compartment. If you don't have jumper cables, you'll have to find a Good Samaritan who not only is willing to assist you but has jumper cables as well.

2. Place both cars in Park or Neutral, with their ignitions shut off and their emergency brakes on.

3. Remove the caps from both batteries (unless they're sealed).

Batteries produce explosive hydrogen gas, and a spark could set it off. If the caps are open, you can avoid such an explosion. (Sealed batteries have safety valves.)

4. Connect the cables.

The positive cable has red clips at either end, and the negative cable has black clips. It's important to attach them in the proper order:

1. First, attach one of the red clips to the positive terminal of your battery (it has "POS" or "+" on it, or it's bigger than the negative terminal).

2. Attach the other red clip to the positive terminal of the GS's car.

3. Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the GS's battery.

4. Attach the last black clip to an unpainted metal surface on your car that isn't near the carburetor (if your car has one) or battery.

Figure 1 shows how both the positive and negative cables should be connected.

Figure 1: Make sure to connect jumper cables in the proper order.

5. Try to start your vehicle.

If it won't start, make sure that the cables are properly connected and have the GS run his or her engine for five minutes. Then try to start your car again. If it still won't start, your battery may be beyond help.

6. Disconnect the cables, thank the Good Samaritan, and resume your life.

Don't shut off your engine; drive around for a while to recharge your battery.

How do you replace headlight motors in a 1991 Mercury Capri?

With great difficulty. Raise the light, remove the black plastic trim piece, remove the headlight bezel then remove and unplug the headlight. The housing/motor assy is held in by four screws but the lower two are blocked by either the windshield washer or colling water reservoir bottle (depending on side). The difficult part is that the car is build like a Chinese puzzle and you might have to remove a bunch of other stuff off to get the coolant reservoir off (I haven't actually done the other side and I hope not to). Good luck

Why does your fan not kick on until you put your ac on?

Answer

The fact that it comes on when the A/C is on indicates the fan motor is good. The fan will only come on when the temperature sensor indicates the engine needs additional cooling. While traveling down the road the fan will rarely come on. It will come on in stop & go traffic. If the engine is not overheating, then you have no problem.

there is a fan behind the radiator that is temp controlled & a fan in front of the radiator that runs when the A/C is on.

How do you put the top of a 93 mercury capri convertible back up?

Use your key to unlock the storage area. Open the "door" to the storage area and pull the top straight up and forward. I find it easiest to grab it somewhere near the middle. Lift the rear part of the top straight up over the main body of the top and close the storage area door. You may have to go from side to side on the car to lift the rear part out of the way of the storage door. Once the door is closed, lower the rear part of the top onto the trunk area, lift the front of the top enough to slide and click the rear into the channel just above the trunk; be sure it is clicked in on both sides. Lower the top back down in front and hook the hooks into place. Note: these tops are notorious for contracting while the're in the storage compartment. You may have to have someone push down on the top to hook the hooks. I've found it is best to put the top up while it is warm outside, especially if you know the weather is going to turn cooler overnight!

What is a heater blend door?

What would cause the headlight on a 1991 Mercury Capri to retract but not raise?

The headlights "retract" by gravity but lift via a lift motor. Failed headlight lift motors are probably one of the biggest problems on early 1990 versions of the Capri. If one headlight lifts fine but the other one won't, you'll need to replace the lift motor. Mercury did put a manual lift knob behind each headlight that can be turned by hand to lift the headlight into place in the event of a motor failure. You can use the lockout switch on the center console near the emergency brake to lock the headlights in the UP position once you get both of them up properly. This avoids having to open the hood and crank the knob every time you turn the lights on. Rebuilt lift motors are available online at many autoparts places that specialize in Capri - just Google "Capri headlight lift motor"
