What causes the service engine light to come on in your 1997 Lincoln Continental?
Just get someone to plug in a code reader to tell what is probably malfunctioning. Others have said that Autozone may provide this service for free (and try to sell you the needed parts). I went and bought a code reader that lets me reset the light after fixing the problem. If you reset a light, it will go on again if you did not fix the right thing. Code reader is the trick here. This questin is very broad, and the author simply needs to narrow down the problem by getting the trouble code, and the interpretation of the code.
What causes the exhaust pipe to smoke?
It depends on what color the smoke is. If it is white smoke that usually mean coolant is in the oil and that can be a result of a blown head gasket. If it is a greyish bluish color then it is oil burning. if it is black then you are burning gas.
Why would a 1992 Mercury blow black smoke?
Black smoke is caused by an over rich mixture and normally occurs whenever the engine is working hard. Like going up a steep grade, being loaded heavy or during heavy acceleration. More black smoke can be observed when the vehicle is operated at higher altitudes because the air is thinner. A dirty air filter is also another cause of excessive black smoke. If black smoke is noticed while the engine is idling at low altitude or under normal driving conditions this condition should be diagnosed a.s.a.p. to prevent engine damage. bad rings or busted pisten you need anew motor
Will over filling oil crank case cause smoke from breather hose?
Yes, it is possible. Overfilling an engine with oil, is just as bad as not having enough oil. When an engine has been overfilled, the crankshaft will whip the oil causing caveatting. This causes air to be trapped in the oil. This trapped air causes a loss of lubrication and in some cases can cause serious engine damage. I am not talking about adding 1 pint too much and cannot tell you what too much is. It is different on different engines. Drain out any excess oil and fill it to the full mark and no more.

How do you change a thermostat in a 2000 Chevy venture without taking off the exhaust?
You take the trottle body lose and use a stub wrench to get the bottom bolt. The bottom hole in the gooseneck housing is really a slot, so just loosen the bottom bolt to allow enough clearance to get the housing by the thermostat.
I found removing the bottom bolt made it earier easier to remove the housing. You will need a 10mm stubby wrench(stubby ratchet wrench even better) to get to the bottom bolt,as well as a pry bar to pry the heat shield away from the thermostat housing to give you a little more clearance to get it past the thermostat, this made the job ALOT easier. You should also get yourself a throttle body gasket while your at the parts counter because it will probably break when you remove the TB (mine did).
Where is the reset button for the check engine light on a 1996 Mercury Sable?
No button. You'll need to use an engine diagnostic scanner that has a little more functionality. Some of the better ones allow you to clear a code and reset the light. The cheaper ones just let you see the codes.
Answeryou need to take it to a auto shop and have then use there OBD2 SCAN TOOL then they can tell you why it came on and turm the engine light off

Why is there smoke coming from coolant resvoir tank?
It could just be a bad radiator cap, they are set to release pressure at a set range. But caution the steam you see may be from a blown head gasket that is over pressurizing the coolant system.
Why do you smell a strong gas smell out the tailpipe?

What valve is the intake valve on a 1985 350?
the bigger valve is always the intake valve on any car......you have a 350 so its a v8 so you have 8 intake valves and 8 exhaust valves ..........
