Definitely, this is an issue with that car. I had the same problem with my Acura CL 3.0 1997 and i finally resolved it yesterday. The solution for the problem is the vehicle speed sensor and it is located in the back of the tranny behind the engine. Try to locate the distributor cap and look a bit dipper. Its is very close to the transmission mount. It has a grey electrical plug andtwo bolt holding it to the trans. You will need a 10mm socket, an extension and a ratchet to get it out. Pulling is from either a misaligned steering or low tire pressure. Shaking is caused by improper tire balance, faulty tire, bent rim or bent half-shaft.

However be it known that in some states and jurisdictions It is illegal to disable the odometer. It is called fraud.

With electronic ones the car computer often stores a service record, where you can see if the odo value has been changed. Depending on the MOT laws where you live, they may also note the mileage from each inspection.

Apart from that, it's difficult. You basically have to judge if the odo value seems reasonable to the overall condition of the vehicle. For cars you can look at how worn the pedals, driver's seat and driver's door are, which are also things that will see heavy use on a car that's being driven far.

Because your odometer, or something connecting the odometer to the battery, is broken. Most likely the odometer is the problem if the rest of your dashboard is working fine.

If it's an electronic dash, then dry solder joints are possible, (Happened to my 1988 pintara) look for a hairline crack around any solder joint. Fix by simply soldering over the joint. (Make sure you use electrical solder and iron.)

If the odometer is not working but the speedometer is still indicating speed, the most likely fault is a set of small plastic gears inside the speedometer instrument itself. I have seen these gears available for sale at various BMW parts specialists. Removing the dash cluster for access to the speedometer is not difficult in a 1987 E30 car. With the cluster on the bench, you can repair the speedometer gears or replace the whole thing. Used speedometers are plentiful at on-line auction sites such as eBay.

If it's under warranty, have the dealer do it. If not, you'll need to get a shop manual to help you figure out how to remove the instrument cluster. It's usually just a couple screws.

Don't. Get a garage to do it; make sure they've done it before. You need to buy the bulb from the dealer anyway as it's a special. Then you need to get the instrument panel out, to do this you need to remove the dash. See the related link for a video showing how to do it on a Zafira.

My advice; unless you have a good tool kit you should basically plan to spend all weekend on it. I would also recommend you find out the opening times of your local auto spares and tools shop in case you need to buy drive adapters for your screwdriver half way through.

Odometer readings are displayed from by data relayed by the PCM. It is fully electronic and can only be manipulated by a specialized licensed repair facility. The Gauge cluster also has a built in memory so even if the PCM is changed it will not adjust the odometer display.

As I discovered this morning, the odometer on the 93 SL2 is actually electric, thus explaining why the speedometer continues to work while the odometer does not. My daughter found a 93 SL2 for sale and when I spoke to the owner last night he stated the odometer quit working after he took his after market stereo out and installed the factory radio for the impending sale. My research this morning suggests everything from a fuse in the fuse box on the passenger side of the console to a possible broken wire to an issue with the entire instrument cluster. Repair costs for the people with similar problems ranged from $450 to $800 dollars. When I go look at the car today if I do not find a bad fuse we will be passing on the car. Good luck.
