How can i tell if engine damage ran hot?
A couple of things- Does engine start well, cold or hot? Have you noticed loss of power? Does it smoke?(maybe an indication of a blown head gasket) Do you notice water in the oil?(another indication of head gasket failure or warped heads) Do you notice an engine miss (a putt-putting sound at the exhaust pipe) There are other indicators as well, but these are the most common with an overheat-damaged engine. I just put a 3.1 in my son's car and the reason was that the heads warped so badly that it was cheaper to find a good, decent mileage engine.
you might try to move your steering wheel at the same time you are turning the key in the ingition. The lock mechanism might be in a bind.
The same was happening with my 93 achieva s I changed the oil sending unit... with the stalling ie.. shutters then kills... then wont go back into gear till cools off ...changes the tranny oil and filter and it stopped for a while then when it started doing it again when it would shutter I would punch the gas and seen to correct what it was doing ,,,the achieva

Passlock (TM)
Your vehicle is equipped with the Passlock theft-deterrent system.
Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent system. The system is armed once the key is removed from the ignition. Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder is turned with a valid key. If a correct key is not used, fuel is disabled.
During normal operation, the SECURITY light will go off after the engine is started. If the engine stalls and the SECURITY light flashes, wait until the light stops flashing before trying to restart the engine. Remember to release the key from the START position as soon as the engine starts. If you are driving and the SECURITY lights comes on, you will be able to restart the engine if you turn the engine off. However, your Passlock system is not working properly and must be serviced by your retailer. Your vehicle is not protected by Passlock at this time. You may also want to check the fuse or circuit breaker. See your Oldsmobile retailer for service.
If the SECURITY light comes on while the engine is running, a problem has been detected and the system may need service. See your dealer for service.
Note: my Achieva has a 'bypass' switch located in plain sight on the lower side of the dash near the hood release latch. I have had to push that button while trying to start the car. I did not have the remote on that key chain. If you have a remote, make sure the batteries are fresh and try to resynchronize the remote to the vehicle following this procedure:
Synchronization
Your Remote Lock Control system is equipped with a security system that prevents anyone from recording and playing back your signal. The transmitter does not send the same signal twice to the receiver. The receiver will not respond to a signal that has been sent to it more than once. To resynchronize your transmitter and receiver, follow these directions:
1. Stand close to your vehicle
2. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter at the same time.
3. Hold the buttons for five seconds. In this time, the doors should lock and unlock once. This confirms the resynchronization. If the doors do not lock and unlock, see you retailer for service.
why don't you do just what i did? disable the security! nobodys going to steal an achieva anyway unless they are crazy then they would probably bring it back! lol take off the cover to the steering column. look on the passengers side of the column and you will see 3 small 20 gauge wires, yellow, white, and black. cut the yellow wire. problem solved! security is now disabled. your security light on the dash will stay on all the time now when running but isn't that better than paying hunderds of dollars for maybe nothing? I know this works cause i had to do it on my 97 achieva. Good luck

no you do not have to remove driver side wheel and there is 3 bolt that hold it to the transmission and one bolt threw the center. the 3 bolt should be 15mm head and the one that in center the nut is 15mm and the bolt 17mm
The water outlet, also called a petcock is located near the lowest point in the cooling system and is used to drain coolant from the engine. The petcock typically has wings, which are designed for better grip when turning the valve. If coolant is leaking from this point, it may be the petcock is partially opened and might need only to be closed completely to stop the leaking. The petcock is press-fitted into the bottom of the radiator. A leak around the petcock can be caused by a crack around the collar or a solder joint that has broken. Have a radiator shop pressure test the radiator to make sure there are no other problems with the radiator, such as other cracks. During a pressure test air is pumped into the radiator and then it is dunked into a water tank. Air bubbles escaping from the radiator indicate leak sites and will need to be repaired. --mark

Well if it weren't for the fact that all my old cars can burn alcohol I would never pass emissions. So I'd say yes as long as it isn't diesel. I hope that first guy never gets water in his fuel tank because you know how to fix that drain the tank or iso heat aka alcohol. Now just for you people I will fill my 1994 achieva with flex fuel aka gas mixed with alcohol if I have any trouble I'll let you know. Here in Arizona flex fuel is not cheaper so I've never tried it but I have put a bottle of 99% rubbing alcohol in a 1/4 tank of gas to get my 77 280z to pass emissions. I know nothing of the law so you may want to check.
No, pretty much the only GM products that are FFV cars are popular fleet cars and trucks. NEVER use a alcohol type fuel in a car unless it is a FFV. alcohol will deteriorate rubber and plastic. the fuel system on a FFV car is usually stainless steel or all metal.

Yes, it is very hard to replace a water pump on an Achieva. When the pump died on my 1996 Achieva, the engine needed to be unbolted and removed to get to it. As I recall, it cost about $500.
I have a 95 Olds Achieva 3.1 and the water pump was very easy to change. Mine is on the front passenger side of the engine. Very easy to get to, just be careful not to break any bolts off. lol

On my 1994 achieva its vacume controlled i had to replace the line going to the controller. It was broken. It runs frin the top of your intake throttle body its a small line maybe 1/8 inch down to a vacume tank in lower front drivers side, from there it runs up the drivers side fender accrossed the firewall towards the top and into the passanger side through the firewall. It comes though behind the glove box and over to a vacume spliter behind the vent selecter. mine broke right at the vacume spliter. Word of advise use heavy stiff plastic vacume line to replace it anything less will colapse when vacume is applied. this solved my problem. the line is very easy to replace.
