my car had this problem. first the tickin you hear is the valves. either your low on oil and they are starving for oil. or they are going bad. if the clicking goes away when you start to rev the motor then its the oil if it gets worse they are bad and are goin to need replacing soon. as for the overheating that is the thermostat. it needs replacing now depending on the year make and model of the car this is a fairly easy task and only takes an hour or so. if want to explain more to me about this e-mail me at fluffy_duck2004@yahoo.com put something like "car question" in the subject

Check your cooling fan

depending on how much it overheats.... you can blow a head gasket...warp your heads ... crack your radiator..

The defrost selection cycles the AC pump, regardless of what temperature you are choosing to defrost at. This cycles the freon, and cools the evaporator (inside dash), and heats up the condenser (in front of radiator) I would check for 1. the fan working in front of the motor... 2. road debris, bugs, cotton from weeds plugging the space between the radiator and the condenser (common)

The most common causes of engine overheating (in no particular order): 1) Blown head gasket - fix = replace blown head gasket; 2) Blocked radiator core - fix = chemical clean &/or radiator back flush; 3) Stuck thermostat - fix = replace thermostat; 4) Faulty water pump - fix = replace water pump; 5) Non-functioning cooling fan(s) - fix = check wiring to fan(s) &/or thermo switch; 6) Broken / loose fan belt - fix = replace or tighten fan belt; 7) Lack of water / coolant in radiator - fix = top up radiator; 8) Retarded ignition timing - fix = check / adjust ignition timing; Hope this helps!

It may be due to a bad electric cooling fan. Replaced mine twice. Make sure the coolant level is not dropping. I experienced a leaking overflow tank that contributed to the problem. It's buried up under the cowl.

yes. because engine will have a hard time pushing the cylinders and if your fan is attached to the crankshaft(old engines), it will produce less air.

Are you asking about the Triumph V-8 or a conversion V-8? Had two Stags converted to

Rover/Buick V-8s. Easiest thing to keep from overheating was not to use a cross flow radiator. If you use a cross flow, you will end up with a air pocket in the engine. You can get a header tank off a TR-7 or TR-8 and take a tap off the top of the intake manifold. Need to put the tank higher than the engine.

You should check your water level. It's low, and you have a leak. Get someone to check it for you.

The heater in your car works off the water from your radiator, no water in the radiator will over heat the engine ergo top up the water.

Could also be low antifreeze level causing water in radiator to freeze making the engine overheat and the heater to blow cold air.

Mine was because the impeller in the water pump had disintegrated to the point where it would not move the water. The water would overheat, but the hot water would not get moved into the heater core to blow hot air. I replaced the water pump and it all works now.

Theres a couple of things that can cause this. First, check ALL the hoses to be sure you dont have a leak. make sure the radiator and reservoir are not leaking. Then you need to check the thermostat. The easiest way i know to do this is run the engine to normal temp, providing you can do this without overheating.

there are two hoses coming out of your radiator, one is coolant to the engine, one is the warm coolant back to the radiator. Touch them both, CAREFULLY DO NOT GET BURNT or hurt by any other engine parts such as the engine fan!. if one of them is WAY cooler than the other your thermostat is stuck and you need to replace it.

You may have a head gasket blown,if you are losing coolant and do not see any puddles, like this coolant has "mysteriously vanished" get this checked out!

another possibility if your heater core is shot, if its not the thermostat, your hoses are all intact and your radiator and reservoir are not leaking, this is likely your problem.

OR, you may have a water pump problem, if you have a large puddle under your engine, not near the radiator, get this checked by a professional mechanic ASAP.

When you shut off an engine, the water pump stops flowing h20 plus antifreeze through the engine block and radiator. All of that extreme heat settles into the aggregate fluid. This can cause the engine to over heat the fluid and boil over. That is the reason you do not go out and take off the radiator cap. You could be severely burned or scalded by the hot fluid. That fluid has to be pumped constantly to keep the engine cool. The electric fans should cut on and help cool to some degree. Too, while you are driving on the road, the air at 30 to 60 miles per hour will help cool as well. When the air and the water stop flowing. Heat will build up.

Low coolant. If the coolant is low then the heater core is not able to transfer heat in to the car.

Running any four-stroke engine with low or no oil is going to cause serious damage. Connecting rods and head parts would most likely go first. Oil acts as a coolant for internal parts as well as a lubricant. Without oil to lubricate, parts will only get hotter, and without oil to cool them, bad, bad things will happen.

water pump may be locking up, causing belt to break and vehicle to overheat. have a good mechanic look it over.

It is the first thing you should do, and is easy. *MAKE SURE YOUR CAR IS NOT HOT WHEN REMOVING A RADIATOR CAP* When air enters the closed/pressurized cooling system, the air ends up in your reservoir tank and bubbles the top. The engine produces heat no matter the weather. The cooling system must have a problem such as a bad thermostat, bad fan clutch, plugged radiator, missing radiator shroud or low on coolant because of a leak somewhere.

Water is used to cool things down.

We'll start with the least cost and work our way up,

1. Low coolant level. It is possible that you are just low on coolant/water. Replace the coolant, then check the level each time before you drive it to discern if you have one of the more expensive troubles listed below.... If the coolant level stays good and no more overheating, then you are good to go. Keep an eye on the coolant levels routinely to avoid future challenges and keep on the lookout for larger issues. IF you note a leak or coolant around, then you should identify from where the leak is coming, and pursue solving that problem.

2. Electric Fans are not coming on due to electrical trouble of some kind. Could be a sensor or such. Start the car up, turn on the A/C, if after a few minutes the electric fans don't come on....that is the problem.

3. Thermostat is stuck/Radiator Clogged. Flush the radiator. Drain all the coolant out (remember antifreeze is poisonous, so don't put it out where the family pets or children can consume it, refer to the lables on the coolant for other safety disclosures)

Modern cars actually do not send coolant through the radiator until the engine gets to a certain temperature...ussually about 180 Degrees F. A thermally activated valve called a 'thermostat' by most mechanics sometimes gets stuck closed, and causes the water to circulate only through the engine, and not through the radiator. Checking this is a bit more effort, and given the labor involved...most folks should have a mechanic simply replace the thermostat for them. The part is relatively cheap to replace once you have done the labor to get to it, so usually it is replaced instead of just checked at this point. If you have done it before then it should be no trouble, it is typically located where the upper radiator hose goes connects to the engine. There is usually a 'two-bold' hose neck that, once removed reveals the thermostat.

4. Water pump is bad. Ussually the water pump will leak if it is bad. Sometimes not, but over 90% of water pump failures are evidenced by a leak. The water pump is more difficult to replace than the thermostat, so act according to your own estimate of your skill level. Ussually a repair manual or online repair guide will suffice to walk you through the process with some challenge....but about 30% of the folks are skilled enough to get it done. About 15% of folks will have the skills to get it done right with no problems the first try.

5. Recurring Low Coolant. So, you keep adding water or coolant but it just seems to magically disappears? You've looked for any signs of leaks under the car while it is warm and running....but not a drop. For the Cadillac engines...this is usually a sign that there is either a head gasket leak, or a head that is cracked. The coolant/water is simply escaping by leaking internally into the combustion chamber and comes out the tailpipe as steam. (Now, so there is no confusion...seeing steam coming out of the tailpipes is NOT a guarantee that there is a head gasket blown....since one of the byproducts of burning hydro-carbons like gasoline is H2O steam.) 95% of folks should have a mechanic take care of this problem if you note that you have these symptoms.

6. Aliens or Gremlins. If all of these problems/solutions still yield trouble, then it is likely someone has sabotaged your vehicle in some way, either by cloggin up the radiator with some foreign additive to the coolant or other foolery. Sometimes in an effort to solve #5 listed herein above, folks with try a sealant product in large quantities hoping to avoid costs and delays. It will work for a while....maybe....but not forever. It often just leads to other troubles later on.
