The US has had a lot of small conflicts that involved military action, but all presidents except for Madison, Polk, Lincoln, McKinley, Wilson, F. Roosevelt, Truman, Lyndon Johnson. G. H. W. Bush , George W. Bush and Obama either served only in peace time or had only brief periods when they called on the military for foreign or domestic disputes. I did not count Indian Wars which broke out from time to time but usually did not last long. So, you could say the 31 presidents served only in peace time.

Is the peace sign really an upside down broken cro?

The peace sign, as seen today, is not a broken cross. It was originally designed for the nuclear disarmament campaign, and is still recognized as such in Great Britain. It has been widely accepted as the peace sign worldwide.

It is a combination of the air-flag signals for N(uclear) and D(isarmament). the sign for N is two flags pointed at downward angles and D is one flag up and the other down. it was made in 1958. it has absolutely nothing to do with anti-christians or broken crosses.

Another View

The peace sign (minus the circle around it) has a 1300 year history as an anti-Christian symbol. It was also used by the Nazis in WWII.

Better known as St. Peter's broken cross as St. Peter, not wanting the value of his own execution to be mistakenly put on the level as crucifixion of Christ, asked that he be crucified upside down. Remember that the ancient world was filled with people who could not read and there for relied on symbols to relate information.

Early Christians used the cross, an anchor, the ichthys (fish) and dozens of other symbols to relay messages of encouragement and allegiances and such to others in the area. Many other people of non-Christian beliefs also used symbols for similar purposes.

What is unique about a homicide detective?

Okay, to answer this question, let's break it into two questions: What is a detective, and what is homicide?

A detective, also known as an investigator, is a police officer whose job is to investigate crimes. They often interview witnesses and suspect(s) in order to solve a case (crime).

Homicide is defined as the taking of one life by a member of the same species (homo= same, -cide = to kill). A homicide ranges from one of two justifiable offenses (self-defense or accident), to one of several degrees of criminal homicide, which severity of offense ranges from manslaughter by culpable negligence to capital murder.

So a homicide detective, or homicide investigator, in short, is a police officer who is a member of the Homicide division of a law-enforcement agency, and accordingly, whose job is to investigate homicide cases.

What is meant by Enlightenment?

The Buddha didn't use a word meaning "enlightenment" when he talked about the change that came to him under the Bodhi tree, the change that he taught could occur to anyone; he used a word that meant "Awake" and sometimes "liberation" or the word "nibbana" which makes reference to the cooling off/blowing out of a flame. The translation of these terms into the word "enlightenment" seems to have come from the vocabulary of westerners who lived in the Post-Enlightenment era (the 1800s).

What is meant by "awakening" is seeing the world more clearly, as opposed to our natural state in which we drift through life not paying a whole lot of attention to what's going on or how things work; this is an attempt to point out that there is a better way to see the world but it does require paying attention, and is preferable to living in a somewhat unreal dream. What is meant by "liberation" is freedom from suffering (dukkha). What is meant by the cooling of "nibbana" (aka "nirvana") is the pleasant state of equanimity reached when one has gotten good at seeing the world more accurately and therefore learned a way of being that ends self-created problems, leading to calm. That which is "blown out" is the concept of a lasting, separate, changeless self.

What was the problem between Osama bin Laden and the US?

The late Osama bin Laden was against the US because he considered the US to be engaged in global political activities which were contrary to the interests of Islam. For example, the US has been the major ally of Israel since Israel's creation in 1948, and without US support Israel would have been destroyed a long time ago. The US has always been a predominantly Christian nation, and since it is the most powerful nation in the world, this creates a problem for those who would like to see a world dominated by Islam.

What does the United Nations do to promote peace?

It doesn't.

But the ideaology of the United Nations is somewhat sound. A country, represented by a U.N. delegate, can bring their problems to the United Nations and have them heard by every other participating UN country. This enables said country to elicit help from other nations as it regards diseases, famine, political instability, etc. The UN can provide relief in the form on food, clothing, money, medical expertise, or military presence. If two nations have issues with each other, the UN can provide mediation to end the problem.

Obviously, the UN is not always successful in its mission of creating peace, but it does occasionally prove its worth, like during the Cold War, when the UN Security Council, comprised of The US, the UK, France, Russia, and China, and a revolving sixth member, were able to meet and talk in front of the UN. As long as they were talking, they weren't nuking each other, and so in that sense the UN helped provide peace. But overall, the UN has no sovereignty over its member nations and therefore no real power to do anything, so it cannot have an active role in any real and lasting peace process.

How is peace related to friendship?

Well, peace is about everybody working together and respecting one another. Friendship also involves respect and caring about others authorities. So, peace and friendship both involve respect- that's where they bump into each other.
