How do you replace the alternator on a 1991 Pontiac Firebird?

For 5.0L V8 engine. 1. Disconnect battery. For safety, cover the + & - battery metal connectors with a rag so they don't short out. 2. Place a 1/2" drive ratchet into the belt tensioner and rotate counter-clockwise. Remove belt from alternator. 3. Disconnect wire attached to the back of the alternator it's held on with a nut (you may have to remove rubber boot first). 4. Disconnect power plug going into alternator, it's held on with a clip. 5. Remove the bracket nut (not sure what size) on the back of the alternator. Remove the (2) torx bits (not sure what size) in front of the alternator. Remove alternator. Note: If you don't have Torx bits, try to get Torx bits that attach to a ratchet; this will aid in removal & installation. 6. When installing new alternator, start with Torx bits first, then the bracket nut (don't fully tighten the Torx bits or the bracket nut until they are hand tight, then tighten as normal. Install the wire that connects to back of alternator, then the power plug. Reattach belt. Good Luck!!

What would cause a Pontiac Firebird 400 that squirts oil out of the dipstick tube at over 2500 rpm The engine just passed the emissions test with ease and no oil burning is present.?

Most likely missing the lower dipstick tube. Its function is to direct the dipstick away from the rotating assembly and down into the oil. The tube is located in the oil pan and is pressed into the upper tube (the one visible on the outside of the engine). Do you have trouble pressing the dipstick in all the way? Does it feel like it is hanging up on something near the bottom? This could cause problems as the dipstick can get "chewed up" by the rotating crankshaft and connecting rods, possibly causing engine damage. The bad part is to replace the lower tube you must remove the oil pan which usually means pulling the engine.

Bypass security chip in key for a 1991 Pontiac firebird?

I have a 1991 GTA, take off the plastic cover where your hood release is [by your left drivers foot], behind that is the body of the car. you will see a black rubbery square cover. It's kind of like resin. peel it back, and you will be able to see a black plastic box with thick purple & orange wires and maybe a yellow & black stripe on one. These are all related to your starting system. Pop that plastic cover off with a screwdriver. You will find a contact. If you squeeze the contact and hold it while turning the key your car should start.

How do you reset the security system on a 1999 Pontiac Firebird?

I had this issue and was scratching my head for about a week. If you have $500 bucks laying around I'd say take it to GM and get it fixed but here's what you need to do. Go to pretty much any auto parts store and purchase an ignition lock cylinder, mines was 34.99. it comes with 2 keys but these keys they provide will not start your car. You'll need to take that key to a locksmith and have them create you a "VATS" key, mines was 25.99. If you don't get the VATS key made you security light will continue to blink thus causing you car to stay in the "locked mode". You can rent a repair manual from your local library for step by step installation. IF YOUR SECURITY LIGHT IS BLINKING AND STALLS AFTER THE FIRST ATTEMPT THEN FOLLOW WHAT YOU'VE JUST READ IT WILL WORK. $35+$26= $61.

THAT SAVES YOU $439. GOOD DAY...

Where is the fuel filter located on a 94 Pontiac firebird and how do i change it?

fuel filter installThe fuel filter is located in the fuel line.Park the car and let it cool off completely. Jack up the rear of the car. It is located just front of the rear axle on the drivers side, where the sub-frame curves up behind the rear seat. No special tools required, just a couple of open end wrenches and a flat head screw driver if I remember correctly.First inspect your fuel lines, if they are rusty, determin if the filter can be removed without breaking the lines, if they contain rust that flakes off of the line have someone with more experince help or take it to a shop, (breaking fuel lines can be costly, and rusty ones can break as easy as if they were made of glass). If your lines are ok all you have to do is unscrew the line on the one end and use the screw driver to unclip the other end, then again with the screw driver push the clip out of the frame holding the filter in place. If your not sure what it looks like go buy the new one first. install the new filter in reverse order and your done. Becareful a fair ammuont of fuel will spill out of the filter and lines, watch for sorces of ignition and safety glasses would be a good idea. When your finished start the car and check filter connections for any fuel leaks. Good luck!

What is the difference between the Pontiac Firebird and the Pontiac Trans AM?

Answer

It's trim level. There are three trim levels for the Pontiac Firebird.

Firebird (base)
Firebird Formula
Firebird Trans Am

Firebird GTA (Third Generation Only) (it's to the Trans Am as the IROC-Z is to the Z28)

Generally, the higher trim levels offer more goodies and more power than lower trim levels.

The second generation also had the Firebird Esprit.

The Trans Am model included a stiffer suspension, larger engine (some years), and distinctive graphics.

The Trans Am is a Firebird. It's an upgrade option. Usually includes upgrades including engine, suspension, body...(spoilers) etc.
