Protestantism

Generally associated with the protests against the Catholic Church and its methods, Protestants follow Jesus Christ. One of the early scholars to lead the break from the established church was Martin Luther. If you have questions about anything to do with Protestantism, this is place to ask them.

What version of the Bible do Protestants usually use?

Most use the Authorized King James Version. There are actually three versions of the King James. One is the Authorized King James Version of 1611, another is the 21st Centrury King James Version, and still another is the New King James Version, completed in 1982.

There are some differences between the three versions.

One of the most notable difference is that the Authorised KJV uses the divine name of God, Jehovah in four places: Exodus 6:3; Psalms 83:18; Isaiah 12:2; and Isaiah 26:4, and it uses the name Jehovahjireh at Genesis 22:15; Jehovahnissi at Exodus 17:15; and Jehovahshalom at Judges 6:24, and it uses Jah, which is the abreviated form of the divine name at Psalms 68:4.

The 21st Century King James uses the name Jehovah in all of the same places, except in Psalms 68:4, it uses the full name Jehovah, instead of the abbreviation Jah as the Authoized version does.

The New King James Version has left the name out entirely, substituting the word Lord in all 8 places that it is found in whole or in part in the previous other versions.

How did the relationship of Protestantism to the state differ from that of Roman Catholicism?

Government and the ChurchIf I am understanding your question correctly, you are asking how the protestant churches have historically interacted with governments and how that differs from how Roman Catholicism has done so.

This is a somewhat complicated question, because more times than not, the governments have at least been influenced by religion if not controlled by it. For example, Iran is utterly conrolled by the Islamic religion. There is no freedom of faith there. Those who want to covert to Christianity are killed.Islam forms the basis for all areas of government, from the courts to the army.

Catholicism began to really gain strength when the leader of the Roman Empire, a man named Constantine, converted to Christianity in the early 300's. Up until the 1400's, the catholic church was it as far as Christian churches. Constantine made catholicism the official religion of the empire, moving away from the traditional worship of gods like Neptune and Zeus.

When the Roman Empire fell, its vast territories from the middle east, across Northern Africa, and throughout Europe up into Britain were back to coming up with ways to rule themselves. Catholism had spread throughout the entire empire as people traveled for trade or other reasons. The countries that rose up out of the ashes of the empire had many battles to determine who would be their new leaders, and who controlled what lands. One thing that was consistant was religion. Almost all the various kings and governments were beholden to the Church. The Pope in Rome was very much like a new Caesar- his powers as the head of the Church were formidible. Like it does so often, power began to corrupt the leaders of the church. Only the priests were allowed to read the scriptures, for a peasant to do so (assuming he could even read- most could not)was a serious infraction. The reason for this is because the church had begun to teach and to do many things which were not in the Bible. It was because of these practices that protestantism began. The church was teaching, for instance:1.Jesus literally became the communion wafer during communion. The bible teaches that it is only symbolic of His body. 2.When you die, you have to go to a mythical place called pugatory in order to pay for any sins you forgot to confess. And the only sure way for a quick exit from purgatory is to PAY "indulgences" to a priest, ($), so he'll say a mass for your release.(!!)The bible makes no mention of purgatory, nor indulgences,it does teach that ALL a believers sins are washed away when a person accepts the free- FREE- gift of Christ's death ontheir behalf. It is simple! They sought to complicate it andto profit from it. 3. Mary, as the Mother of Jesus, was conceived without sin, in other words she had a conception like Jesus'. She was assumed bodily into heaven (just like Jesus) and serves a co-redeemer alongside Christ. She is omniscient(Like God) and can hear and respond to billions of prayers, and omnipresent(like God) and be everywhere at once. The bible says absolutely none of the above. These doctines were added centuries later by people who were trying to evangelizegroups who had a very strong attachment to a goddess figure in their worship. They simply substituted Mary in for the goddess. The bible acknowledges Mary as an obedient "handmaid of the Lord" who deserveshonor, not worship. She was a sinner in need of a saviour too. I am sureshe is horrified by those who make images of her which they bow to, and all the people who blindly look to her for answered prayers. THERE ARE MANY OTHER EXAMPLES OF HOW THE CATHOLIC DOCTRINE HAS STRAYED FAR FROM BIBLICAL TRUTH! This is why the reformation had to happen. Martin Luther, a catholic monk, was driving himself crazy trying to be "good enough" to please God. He went through years of torment until God opened his eyes to a basic truth in the book of Romans. None of us is, or ever can be good enough to enter God's presence. Not even Billy Graham or Mother Teresa. The Bible says that our good deeds are "like filthy rags" to God. We have no chance on our owm, which is why Jesus had to come, had to live a sinless life, and had to shed his innocent blood on our behalf to pay the penalty, death, that God requires."The wages of sin is death"- Now all we have to do is gratefully acknowledge this tremendous gift, and accept it by faith. Luther and others thought it was high-time for this simple message of good news to be made available again to all people. There were good priests and bishops at the time, but they were out-numbered and out-shouted by those who had become corrupt. The "Church" did not want these teachings going around, because they meant freedom to the people. Freedom from sin. Freedom from the oppressive requirements of the church. And they certainly did NOT want the low class gutter people to have access to a bible in their own language!! That would wreck everything! But after much persecution and death, that is exactly what happened. The printing press was invented right around the time of the reformation which opened the door to printing bibles in various languages (God's timing is perfect!) and the people were finally discovering for themselves the truths witheld from them. Out of the energy of the reformation, a country called America was begun. The founders wanted to guarantee that all who came here were free to worship as they wish- with no church controlling the government. It was the first country in the world to do so, although England was the first strong country to break ties to the vatican. Henry the 8th was excommunicated from the catholic church because he wanted to divorce his first wife. He said, essentially, "Forget you! I'll just start my OWN church." Protestants were the first immigrants to come to America. It's doctrines are conducive to democracy and freedom of thought. Although the catholic church did eventually make it to America and went on to become a thriving body of believers. But in no way does Rome or the Pope have any power to govern this country. In fact, compared to the power it used to wield and the property it used to own, modern catholicism is a mere shadow of its former self. Reformation had some positive effects on catholicism as well. Many of the more egregious practices protested by Luther in his 95 theses were discontinued-such as the sale of indulgences. I realise this is a lengthy answer, but as I said, it is a complicated question. I hope this provides some insight for you. For further information, look up the history of the christian church, the reformation and Martin Luther. There is a vast amount of free info on the net and in libraries. Best Wishes..........

What does the word 'Protestant' refer to?

Literally, one who protests. Protestantism is a movement originating in the "Protest" that Martin Luther, a Roman Catholic priest, made against the Roman Catholic church in the 16th century. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther His protest lead to a split in Christianity that exists to this day from Catholicism and the other forms of Christianity. The term is commonly used to refer to all Christians who are not Roman Catholic, although some consider themselves merely New Testament Christians in the early church sense rather than Protestant. Why do i want to get baptized?

People who want to be considered Christian should be baptized primarily because Jesus told the disciples to go and make other disciples baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. (Matthew 28:19-20). A second reason is that a new believer in Christ would logically want to be identified with Jesus and one way is to be baptized. Most controversy regarding baptism in Christian churches is not why someone should be baptized, but how should a person be baptized. That issue raises all kinds of tempers with different denominational organizations. Bible literalists may want to be baptized in the Jordan River in Israel. Less literal groups may choose immersion baptism in some other water body or a baptismal font in a church. Non-literalists might be happy to be baptized with water by sprinkling. I once asked my pastor how he would baptize me if we were in a desert and there were no water. He thought a minute and answered, "I would spit on my hands and baptize you with that." I said "No can do; we are dried out, have cotton mouth, and can't spit or pass any other form of water!" He finally said he would baptize me with sand! I thought that reasonable. So, some may think immersion in "holy" water sanctified by all sorts of ritual and some may think in whatever is convenient with as little ritual as possible!

What are protestant and Catholic beliefs?

Catholic Answer Catholic beliefs include the total of revelation has given by Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ to the apostles (His Church) and subsequently handed down by them through Tradition, including the Bible and Oral Tradition. Below is a brief synopsis of these beliefs. For a more comprehensive look at them, please see the link below for a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. There really is no set of protestant beliefs, in common, all protestants have in common is that they do not belong to the Catholic Church founded by Christ, but to one of those churches founded by human beings in the sixteenth century or later. As of January 2014, there are way over 30,000 of these, to attempt to define what they believe in would be impossible.

Catholic beliefs:

Christian teachings would be summarized in the Nicene Creed:

I believe in one God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only Begotten Son of God,

born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made, consubstantial

with the Father;

Through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate

of the Virgin Mary,

and became man.

For our sake he was crucified

under Pontius Pilate,

he suffered death and was buried,

and rose again on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead

and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son

is adored and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic,

and apostolic Church.

I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward to the resurrection

of the dead and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

Ten Commandments of God

Exodus XX

1. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

3. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your manservant, or your maidservant, or your cattle, or the sojourner who is within your gates; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

4. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you.

5. You shall not kill.

6. You shalt not commit adultery.

7. You shalt not steal.

8. You shalt not bear false witness against your neighbor.

9. You shalt not covet your neighbor's wife.

10. You shalt not covet your neighbor's goods.

In the sermon on the Mount (Matthew, chapters five through seven)

and in the works of mercy:

The Spiritual Works of Mercy

To admonish the sinner,

To instruct the ignorant,

To counsel the doubtful,

To comfort the sorrowful,

To bear wrongs patiently,

To forgive all injuries,

To pray for the living and the dead.

The Corporal Works of Mercy

Matt 25:31

To feed the hungry,

To give drink to the thirsty,

To clothe the naked,

To visit the prisoners,

To shelter the homeless

To visit the sick,

To bury the dead

To give alms to the poor.

Why was English protestantism able to spread so successfully in the 1500s?

English Protestantism was able to successfully spread in the 1500s as a result of politics. Henry VIII, who became disillusioned with the Roman Catholic Church, embraced the idea of Protestantism and pressured his subjects to do likewise. Leaders in other countries did the same thing.

What were the first Protestants protesting against?

Martin Luther initiated it in his protest largely against the practice of "selling of Indulgences" which was at the time being used to fund the construction of St. Peter's in Rome. He published his "95 Theses" to raise what he felt were important issues for discussion in the church, but the Pope excommunicated him. German Princes that wished to split away from the Holy Roman Empire then decided to take political advantage of Luther and encouraged him to create the first Protestant church: the Lutheran Church. This removed the political power of the Pope to excommunicate those Princes and close the churches in their lands, thus denying the people access the Church Ritual and usually causing a popular uprising that would force the Princes to either repent or be deposed and replaced. Instead the churches in their lands would be Lutheran, which the Pope could not control.

What are John Wesley's General Rules for moral living?

When the Methodists began to grow, they started grouping themselves into class meetings. Classes joined together into societies and these groups bound together under the name "United Societies" Some of the leadership came to John Wesley and asked him what the moral teachings at these class meetings should be. He gave them three ideas which became the General Rules. The long and short forms of these rules asre still found in the United Methodist Book of Discipline (2004). These are the three General Rules (my own condensed version) As evidence of a desire for salvation, persons who attend the United Societies should behave as follows First, by doing no harm or any kind of evil Second, by doing good, all kinds of mercy and doing all the good you can Thirdly, by attending upon the ordinances of God, (worship, Communion, prayer, Bible study, Christian Conferencing etc)

What is the 'All at His Feet' website?

The All At His Feet website is run by the All At His Feet Ministry/Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. The ministry has been in existence for approximately 20 years and has outreaches in several other countries. One prominent leader of the church is Mike Peters. On their website, you'll find their beliefs and lessons on several topics that are of interest to Christians. Lessons are also available on audio tape. There is controversy surrounding the ministry that has been raised by ex-members and/or others, but WikiAnswers is not the place to discuss or air those differences. As in any spiritual decision, it is best to gather all the information, seek God and pray for guidance, and make your choices based on how you believe God is leading you. In fairness to all who are interested in the All At His Feet ministry, two links are provided - one to the All At His Feet website and the other to a site by those who have raised concerns about the group and its practices.
