There should be a sticker near radiator shroud that has belt routing.

If not stick the belt down past the right side of fan/water pump .put belt on crank pulley then pull back of belt over water pump and then down around power steering pulley and up over compressor pulley. put belt from crank pulley around smog pulley then up to tensioner with back of belt around tensioner and then around alternator pulley.next put rachet and socket(15 mm) on tensioner and pull on it while placing belt under idler pulley.

First, check that everything is turning properly. If you have a water pump, alternator, idler pulley... whatever, that's not turning freely, it should be repaired or replaced.

Next, check the tensioner. One of the idler pulleys will be "spring loaded", meaning that it will hold tension against the belt. If the tensioner spring goes soft you'll need to replace it. Push on a tight section of the belt. It should be quite firm and difficult to deflect.

Replacing a tensioner isn't that difficult, just pay attention to the belt routing BEFORE you take it apart. It's easy to get confused later.

You have to pull back on belt tensioner. Tensioner is right below the Altenator. You can use a ratchet to pull it back. There is a square hole that it will fit in. Slip the belt off. work your way backwards to put new one back on.

YUP! Most fords including taurus', trucks, Etc. Have an after market idler pulley assembly that can mount where the compressor would bolt up. Or, crack that bad boy open........................HE HE HE!

If you have a 2.5 engine, the easiest way is to take off the two 15mm alt bolts. that gives you the room, then just take a pry bar or large screwdriver to shift the alt into place while tapping the bolt into the space

Most of the time the tensioner is the wheel that runs over the top of your serpentine belt and moves as the belt moves. it is located on the front of your engine. look for something with a smooth edged wheel moving up and down while your engine is turned on.

My car still has a diagram for belt routing on the underside of the hood. Yours might too. If not, and the belt is still on the car, make a quick diagram of your own for reference.

If your belt has left the car and has joined the bits of semi truck tires on the highway and you can't find a diagram, you're not screwed, but it sucks. Most any GM dealer ship should be able to come up with a diagram for you. If nothing else, post back and I'll go outside and copy my diagram. I'm not quite sure how to get it to you, but we'll find someplace to post it.

The 0400 - 04## are all emissions related, can be caused by something as trivial as an improperly tightened gas cap or as complex as the EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM, which has a series of hoses, purge valve and charcoal vapor canister filter controlled by the computer. Older cars normally develop leaks in the hoses that can be determined using specialized leak detection testing, normally not for diy level of repair. Most of the 0400 series codes will not affect drive-ability but should be treated ASAP

a serpentine belt runs the alternator and the more stuff you have running (heat, lights, radio) it causes the alternator to have to have the belt run faster to supply power to the things that are running. if your belt is loose or worn, it will slip and cannot provide the amount circulation needed for the alternator to produce enough sustainable power to run everything at once. the belt itself runs several components, and if the power steering goes out as well, then most likely that you have a bad belt. you can always try tightening it with the idler pulley. but if the belt is too worn or stretched, then i recommend just getting a new belt entirely. cheap fix really.

Loosen the tensioning pulley and install new belt. There should be a routing diagram in engine compartment or on hood.

First, find a diagram of the correct routing around the pulleys for your car. There may be one on a sticker under the hood somewhere; if not you may find one online, or just draw a diagram of the old one before you remove it. On a serpentine belt system, there is one pulley that tensions the belt. Relieve the tension on this pulley, and remove the old belt. Install the new one, carefully following your diagram. Make sure that you get the grooved side of the belt on the ribs of the ribbed pulleys correctly; you don't want it over the edge of the pulley.

There should be a diagram under the hood for that year.

Use a belt that is about 12 inches shorter.

first make a drawing of the routing of the belt then loosen tensioner remove the old belt install the new belt as per your drawing and release the tensioner after you have made sure the belt is tracking as it should on the pulleys nothing to it good luck

Fit a new belt tensioner

1. Jack up the front of the vehicle.

2. Remove the drivers side tire.

3. Remove the fender liner by pulling the retainer pins. (you might want to get some replacement pins since they often break)

4. Pay attention to the current routing of the serpentine belt; it can be confusing when you try to figure out where the new one goes. It might be a good idea to make a drawing of the current routing.

5. Release tension on the idler pulley. It's spring loaded and it might be a good idea to have someone help at this point.

6. While the tension is off, pull the old belt off one of the pulleys. (that's where the help is handy)

7. Completely remove the old belt then examine all of the pulleys. Especially check the idler pulley bearings (spin and listen for noise or roughness in turning), examine the power steering pump and water pump for leakage and check the alternator for noisy bearings.

8. Replace any faulty components.

9. Replace the belt in the reverse order.

10. Put the fender cover back on.

11. Put the tire back on.

12. Lower the jack.

Some cars make noise like a squeak or a chirp when driven in reverse if they have high mileage. This noise is a warning that the transmission needs to be serviced. The filter should be changed along with the fluid.

I'm not a mechanic but I just had to have the belt tensioner replaced on my 99 ZX2. There are no other adjustments.

There is a diagram on the hood, to remove the belt look to the left behind the strut tower. There is a tentioner there and you release the tention by moving it with a wrench or socket.
