The heater control panel on a 1998 Outback is all one unit with the vents that are above it. To remove the heater control panel, pull off the fan knob. Then, with a flat screwdriver gently pop out the thin piece of plastic below the heater control. There are screws here. The heater control and the vent cover can then be taken out by using the screwdriver to pop the clips holding it on.

That depends on why you are asking. You did not specify model year or type of transmission so I will assume that we are talking about a four speed automatic transmission. If you are draining the fluid by way of the drain plug on the left side of the transmission the amount is 4 quarts, give or take. Make sure that you are using the correct transmission fluid for your car by checking your owner's manual. Since about 2005 they use a type HP fluid. This stuff is not cheap, but I have heard horror stories from people who have tried using Dexron.

That is not a knock, that's a piston skirt slapping against the cyslinder wall. It is either #2 or #4 piston, and if you remove the piston you will find that all the moly coat has been rubbed off the skirt. A new piston is what you need.

I have done this on a 2009 Outback: Passenger side: Slide seat back remove two bolts in the front then slide seat forward and remove two bolts in back. Tip seat backwards to remove any cables for heated seat. I did not do the driver's side but looks the same except probable more wires for the power seat.

I am having the same problem with my 2005 Outback. Apparently water is able to get into the cabin from a faulty seal someplace (I'm guessing the windshield gasket) and the water has leaked onto the heater fan and caused the bearings to rust. This is what is causing the noise. It is important to make sure the leak is fixed before you repair the fan. Anyone else out there having the same problem?

I have an 02 outback wagon and I had to drive 55 mph for 10 min, stop turn the car off for a minute, start it and repeat the process. Answer I found said to do it twice, I did it like 4 times, and it reset all the sensors in the computer.

The owners manual states 4.2 quarts. I use 4.5 to keep things easy.

You are not giving enough information to get a reasonable answer. It's like asking why it won't start. Any, and I mean any, detail would help. Are we talking about the engine cooling system? What are the symptoms that bring you to the conclusion it is overheating? Have you checked the coolant level? What year and size engine? Does it overheat only when stressing the engine, like climbing hills? Does it overheat only in traffic and okay on the highway? Does it overheat when the car is idling? Has the head gasket ever been replaced?
