Are 1998 Toyota Avalons reliable?
I purchased my 98 Avalon XL new and it has 240,000 miles on it. Use it almost every day for sales calls. Has never let me down or not been available for me. The only thing I have replaced on the engine is the valve cover gaskets (once) and just recently the O2 sensor. Internals and transaxle are untouched and the car will run with the big boys on the expressway with no problem. Mileage on highway in cruise consistently right at 29-31 mph. Still has factory hoses, exhaust system, etc. Without a doubt the best thing car I've owned. I am confident it will make 400,000 before having to rebuild engine.

Whatever you do if you need a good laugh go to a Toyota dealership and ask them what it would cost, my answer (in writing) $425. I was told they had to drop the bumper and that's why the labor was so high. The cost of the HID lamp was about $175 and labor about $200 give or take, needles to say I looked for a cheaper solution.
After a little investigating on the Internet and looking at the lamp which I could clearly see and touch i decided to just see if I can get it out, and with in 2 MINUTES! I had the headlamp in my had and the kicker was didn't use a single tool to do it.
I unscrewed a black cover
removed 1 C style clamp,
twisted a plug counter clock wise to unlock it
pulled it away from the lamp
Depressed a butterfly style clamp
and literally twisted and pulled the lamp out
THAT SIMPLY!!!
The kicker is I went on Ebay and found these type of HID lamps in pairs for under $50 many many choices, a for cry from the $175 Toyota quoted us (in writing)

Fuses are located in two places. In the car on the drivers side, to the left near the hood opener & in the engine compartment to the right. Check your owners manual for which fuse box contains the fuse for the sunroof.
The problem may be the sunroof switch. Replacing the sunroof switch is as easy as changing a flashlite battery.

How do you change oil on a 2007 Toyota Avalon?
Here is how you would change the oil on a 2007 Avalon:
1) Place the car in park while it is on driving ramps and set the parking brake. Allow the engine to cool if the car has been driven more than a few miles in the last hour. Place a drain pan under the oil filter housing located near the front of the oil pan. Remove the filter housing lid with a 3/8-inch socket wrench in a counterclockwise direction and set it aside.
2) Push a 12-inch section of an old garden hose onto the long end of the plastic hose adapter that came with your new oil filter. Push the other end of the adapter onto the fitting exposed after the filter housing lid was removed. Make sure the fitting snaps into place. Place the other end of the garden hose into the drain pan and allow the oil in the filter housing to drain completely. Remove the adapter by twisting it out of the filter housing fitting.
3) Remove the filter housing with a filter wrench attached to a 3/8-inch socket wrench turned in a counterclockwise direction. Lower the filter housing. Pull the old paper filter element out of the housing.
4) Clean the filter housing with a rag and insert the new filter element into the housing until it seats into position. Remove the O-ring seals on the filter housing with your fingers and place the new O-rings that came with your filter back into their place.
5) Insert the filter housing back into the cavity at the front of the engine oil pan and tighten it with a filter wrench in a clockwise direction. Replace the filter housing lid by tightening it into place with a 3/8-inch socket wrench turned in a clockwise direction.
6) Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. Add the type of oil recommended in your owner's manual until the full mark is reached on the engine oil dipstick. Close the hood. Start the engine and back your Avalon off of the car ramps.

How to remove the rear light assembly in a 97 Avalon?
Open trunk and remove the two (now) exposed hex head bolts with a 10 mm socket (the bolts are located at the innermost edge or flange of the tail light assembly). Then carefully pull the tail light assembly straight out to the outward side (not toward the back of the car; but to the side). The tail light assembly has two pins which plug into sockets in the side of the car body in the body recess. You can see the sockets from inside the truck if you pull the inner carpet trim away from the inside of the trunk. The light sockets are a twist into the back of the tail light housings. To reinstall: carefully plug the tail light housing back into the sockets from the side and then reinstall the bolts. I later discovered illustrations of this in the later pages of the owners manual.
