Because the gearbox only functions properly at certain temperature's and weather conditions. It works best at cool dry weather but in hot humidity and frigid temperature around or below freezing. Its mostly because of the not top par radiator. Keep fluids levels at the correct spot and u have a chance of getting it to top gear (but not top speed)

sounds like what happened to my 96 magna. the tumblers in the key barrell have jammed or something. happened when i took the key out before it was all the way around on off. had to replace the whole barrell unfortunately

its a gas that goes into it not a liquid. You will need to retrofit your car for the new gas as R-12 has been outlawed. The new gas is called R-134A

Due to the termination of Celica imports, it may be difficult to find them used for another year or so, as they are more likely to repair them than junk them, given the value. If you find one in a salvage yard, it will be a real mess and likely not usable parts...totaled...if the parts are available, high dollar, as insurance companies will want them over new parts to save costs. Injected vehicles do not spray extra fuel when you pump them so that won't help. With the assistance of a friend, one person should attempt to start the engine while the other sprays a little starter fluid into the intake. You might have to remove the cover from the air filter to do this. If the engine attempts to start while you are spraying starter fluid, but stops when you quit, you probably have a fuel delivery problem. It might be fuel pump, fuel filter, injector (if you have a single injector in the throttle body) or something else associated with the fuel system. Any time an engine won't start, always return to the basics: fuel, spark and compression. If it starts when you spray starter fluid but shuts down when you stop,it's a fuel delivery problem. If you check for a spark and there isn't one, you need to find out what's wrong with the ignition. If both of the above check out ok, check the compression. It doesn't matter if the vehicle is injected or carburated, the above ALWAYS holds true.

My 2000 Celica was having trouble a little bit at low RPM's and whenever I would pat the throttle the RPM would drop a little bit then go up. What happened was that it would inject the gas into the cylinders but the air intake would lag and not give power to keep up with the gas...so i would check my air sensor or somethin if i were you..but i dont know whats happening with your car.

Fuel filter may be clogging up enough to not provide enough gasoline to keep the engine running, but will accumulate enough gasoline in it to re-start the vehicle.

unit has had fuel sitting in it, carb is plugged, fuel lines probably rotted, fuel filter hardened. always use fuel stabilizers, this will prevent it from happening, but it is for sure a carb problem.
