When is a group of horses called a Harras?

Is there a way to beat the Ishihara test for colorblindness?

Beat it, meaning cheat on it? Sure. Plenty of ways. You could study the test ahead of time so you know by the patterns what number is there; you could have a non-colorblind friend tell you the answers; you could bribe the doctor... so many ways.

My question though is why in the world would you want to? The test isn't for a grade... it is to determine whether you are colorblind, and that is something that it is helpful to know, because it can affect daily life. For instance, a friend of mine can't tell the difference between two colors when we are playing a certain card game, so he needs someone to check and make sure he really has what he thinks he has.

Maybe if you know this then you can save yourself from larger mistakes at work or school... just by doing something simple like having someone who isn't colorblind check your work.

If you are trying to beat it for the purposes of getting a job, such a pilot or certain types of technician, you need to understand that the guidelines are there for your safety, as well as the safety of others. In certain occupations, colorblindness can lead to fatal mistakes. In those instances, it would be unethical to try to get around this test.

Lifecycle of canine parvovirus?

Briefly:

1. Cells are exposed to parvovirus and take it up.

2. Some trigger causes parvovirus to release its genetic material.

3. Host cells begin to replicate the parvovirus; parvovirus is 100% dependent on its host for replication machinery.

4. Viral particles are released.

Specifically:

Canine parvovirus is a small non-encapsulated single-stranded DNA virus related to feline panleukopenia virus. It binds to the canine (and in some cases feline) transferrin receptor. It is probably taken up through clathrin-mediated endocytosis according to Parrish et al in J Virol 2004 Jul;78(13):6709-14. An as-yet unknown trigger causes the release of its ssDNA. The DNA then uses host ribosomes to synthesize its VP1 and VP2 (capsid) proteins as well as its NS1 and NS2 (for non-structural) proteins. Host DNA-dependent DNA polymerase replicates the genome. Packaging occurs, probably helped along by the non-structural proteins, followed by heavy-capsid release (heavy capsid means capside with DNA inside).

For binding, see http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=17420467

For uptake see http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=15194745

Basically a PubMed search of Parrish CR[Author] will give you all the best articles on CPV-2 as it's called.

Do they just use the fur when they fur trade?

Fur trade means the market for pelts. Pelts are the animal skins with the fur still on them.

Beaver fur fibers, by itself, is used for making felt hats but that is a small portion of the overall trade. Sometimes the entire animal is utilized in some form so that nothing is wasted. For example, farm-raised mink also produce a very nice oil which is used in cosmetics. And a trapper will enjoy a beaver steak from the beaver he has hunted and caught. Otherwise they dispose of the bodies and just use the fur.

Will the legislature in Michigan repeal the wolf-dog law that was passed on false information?

States that have passed laws restricting the ownership and breeding of dog wolf hybrids have done so for viable reasons.
1. They are not a domestic animal and most owners are unable or unwilling to provide the proper care and environment required to keep them safe, healthy and happy.
2. Unwanted or dangerous hybrids can be released into the wilds and contaminate the gene pools of the wild wolf population (this has very probably already occurred).
3. The popularity of owning an animal based on the romantic notion of owning and associating with a wolf lends itself to unscrupulous breeders preying on uninformed buyers (yes, it happens with domestic dogs too).

It is unfortunate that successful owners may/will be negatively impacted by laws that restrict the ownership of hybrids and may force some or all owners to relinquish their companions based on how the law is written.

Responsible breeders (anti-hybrid groups may maintain that there are no responsible hybrid breeders) will be faced with the loss of a breeding program designed to produce a true companion animal that could be every bit as viable as any other domestic breed.

The Michigan Wolf/Dog Hybrid Act passed in 2000 provides:

  • The wolf/dog hybrid act (passed summer of 2000) prohibits ownership of wolf/dog hybrids in Michigan. There is an exception provided for people who legally owned such animals prior to the passing of the act, if they adhere to "grandfather clause" requirements of the act. If you have questions regarding the wolf/dog hybrid act (act 246 of 2000), you may contact Mr. Al Rodriquez of the Michigan Department of Agriculture, Animal Industry Division at 517-373-1077 or Ms. Eileen Liska of Liska Associates at 248-887-2184.

There are no plans to repeal the act. If you have questions or comments you should contact the office of your state representative.
