How did the arms race cause tension between US and Soviet Union?
The Cold War began as World War II was ending. American leaders saw the power and ambitions of the Soviet Union as a threat to our national security. The Cold War was a war of words and ideologies rather than a shooting war, although at times the Cold War turned “hot” as in Korea and Vietnam. Basically, the Cold War was a rivalry between the United States as leader of the western democracies, and the Soviet Union and the nations that were controlled by the communists. As the Soviets continued to develop atomic and nuclear weapons and other military hardware, the US was concerned that a Soviet Military build-up might threaten our military dominance over that nation. It was the policy of the US at that time to contain communism from spreading. In order to contain it, the US had to convince the Soviet Union that our military was stronger than their military. Also, it was necessary to convince the Soviets that should they attack us, our retaliation would destroy their country.
How long was the uss midway war?
Midway was a battle in June, 1942, during WWII, between the Japanese and American Navies. World War Two lasted from 1939-45, but the US was not involved until 1941.
The USS Midway is an American aircraft carrier named for the battle. It was finished about a week before the end of WWII, so it saw no action in WWII. But it did see lots of action in Korea and Vietnam. It was updated and modernized, and fitted with an angled flight deck, like the current carriers. The Midway and its sister ship the Coral Sea, were active Navy ships for more than forty-five years, being retired in the early 1990s.

What war did JFK serve in and how did he feel about it?
John K. Kennedy was a PT boat commander in the south pacific in WWII. A PT boat was a wooden patrol boat with machine guns and torpedoes. It was only 55 feet long and had three gasoline powered Rolls Royce engines and capable of speeds about 55 miles per hour. His boat was once sunk and he spent many days on a deserted island with the survivors of his crew. They were finally rescued when he sent a message carried by local natives that he carved into a coconut.
Did US Marines fight in Alaska?
Yes in WWII against the Japanese who had occupied some of the Islands. It must be pointed out however that the Aleutian Island campaign was an all Army invasion force.
The Battle of Attu was an all US Army battle against 2,900 Japansese defenders and the Battle of Kiska saw 5,300 Canadaian troops joined with the US Army force. The Japanese had already evacuated Kiska when the invasion began. So while a few US Marines were present, there were no Marine Corps combat units involved and the vast majority of Marines involved in the Aleutian Campaign were members of ships detachments.

Is there a list of survivors of the Laconia sunk off the coast of Africa on September 12 1942?
My grandad, Harold Gibson was a survivor of the Laconia Incident. Unfortunately, he has since passed away. I know that there was a documentary made by an American producer called Nigel Turner but I'm keen to learn any more on the subject. I'm not sure of the names of any other survivors. My great uncle Walter was a barkeeper on the Laconia. He survived the sinking but later died in a lifeboat. A complete listing of crew members and armed service personnel; their last address and survival status and can be found in the appendices of "The Sinking of the "Laconia": A Tragedy in the Battle of the Atlantic"
by Frederick Grossmith. ** My Grandad was also a survivor- Edward Marling...any questions email me! ** Hi,
My name is Nicola Hurst. I work for a UK television production company called TalkbackThames. Our drama department are producing a prestigious feature length drama film written by Alan Bleasdale for BBC2 about the Laconia Incident.
I work for the specialist factual department at Talkback. We are hoping to produce a documentary that will accompany the drama and feature first hand accounts from survivors of The Laconia Sinking, telling their own extraordinary stories. We are passionate about documenting this tragic event, which illustrates so well the courage and humanity that can persevere even in times of war, as well as the horror.
I am so keen to find out if there are any living survivors of this horrendous event and would be so grateful for any help with this.
My direct telephone number is: 020 7861 8337.
Thanks so much, Nicola.

How do American actions since V-J Day appear to other nations? I mean by actions the concrete things like $13 billion for the War and Navy Departments, the Bikini tests of the atomic bomb and continued production of bombs, the plan to arm Latin America with out weapons, production of B-29's and planned production of B-36's, and the effort to secure air bases spread over half the globe....
How would it look to us if Russia had the atomic bomb and we did not, if Russia had 10,000 bombers and air bases within a thousand miles of our coast lines and we did not?....Most of us are firmly convinced of the soundness of our position when we suggest the internationalization and defortification of the Danube or of the Dardanelles, but we would be horrified and angered by any Russian counter-proposal that would involve the internationalizing and disarming of Suez or Panama. We must recognize that to the Russians these seem to be identical situations.
Henry A. Wallace
The Emperor was staying in Tokyo. If they had [nuclear] bombed Tokyo, the Emperor would've died for sure, upon hearing this, Japanese people would riot, and fight harder, this would cause even more trouble for the Americans, as Japanese people at the time swore never-ending loyalty to the Emperor, and was fiercely protective of him. With the Japanese Emperor dead, and with American occupation, Japanese society would've been harder for America to control, and to start a afresh, there would've been a lot of tension, and there would be no progress made. Fortunately, the Emperor lived, and Japan is what it is today because he did.
Answer In addition to the above, Tokyo had already been heavily bombed with conventional bombs (incendiary and high explosive) and so cities which had been left relatively untouched by the Allied bombing campaign were chosen as targets for the atomic bombs.
