How much does it cost to fix an alternator?
It really depends. I am having problems with mine right now. I gave a guy a jump start with my car running (not a good idea, apparently), and fried something..may be a fuseable link or voltage regulator , or the alternator itself..hoping its a fuse, as this would be much cheaper than replaceing the alternator.

How do you replace the alternator on a 1994 Saturn?
IF you remove the right front tire and guard this will give you easy access to your alternator. You will need to jack your car up. It sits underneatdh the engine to the right of the starter. If you locate the oil filter you'll see it right in front of you. Just disconnect your battery and then the pplasitc guard on the alternator held on by a single bolt. Then disconnect all wires. Next, Unscrew the two bolts that runn across the bottom. Put a 14mm on the tensioner to put some slack in the serpentine belt and pull the 14mm wrench. Take the belt from around the alternator and then remove the bolt on the top right of the alternator. that one in particular is a little hard to get to, but take your time and good luck. I f you are still having trouble then get the Haynes Repair manual for the Saturn S-series 1991-2002. You can find them at any auto perts store and they are great to have!

How do you replace the alternator on a 1991 Saturn SL1?
The alternator must be removed either through the bottom of the vehicle, or threw the passanger side wheel well opening. Raise and support the vehicle. Disconnect the battery. Remove the serpentine belt by removing tention, and sliding it off. Under the car, disconnect the power wire using a 10MM socket. use a small screw driver and pry upwards on the electrical connector to remove quickly. remove both the Lower and Upper mounting bolts. in some cases, the upper bolt can be more easily accessed from under the hood. once the mounting bolts are moved, some prying, or wiggleing of the alternator may be necessary to free it from the bracket. Installation is just opposite. should take a novice around 30-45 minuites to complete the job.
Where is the voltage regulator on a 1990 Dodge Dakota?
On fuel injected models, the voltage regulator is not in the alternator, it is, unfortunately, part of the computer. The field winding in the alternator receives it excitation voltage from the computer. The computer monitors the system voltage and provides what it thinks is the appropriate field drive to keep the battery charged. The bad part about this is that you have to replace the whole engine computer if the regulator portion of it fails (at least $200.00 or more) I know this from personal experience. It might be possible to install an external regulator or install an alternator with built in regulator but you will have to modify the wiring.
On carbureted models the voltage regulator should be mounted on the firewall near the ignition coil. It should look like a small metal box about the size of a pack of cigarettes and be held on by two small bolts and have a small wiring harness (two or maybe three wires).

Then you will have the room to remove the alternator from the car. There are 2 bolts holding the alternator in 1 on top and the other on the bottom. This is a fairly easy job should take about 15 - 25 minutes to complete.
Most likely the problem is your alternator....the battery light actually does not monitor battery condition, only the charging system.
I'd check the voltage regulator and the fuses first. The fuses are the cheapest fix and the voltage regulator will run about 25% less than an alternator.

What is the difference between and alternator and a generator?
Generator is the general term for mechanical devices that make electricity. Source: Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) Alternator is a type of generator. It is one of the most efficient, light and durable. Ideal for use in the automotive industry. A Generator (dynamo) produces DC direct current, An alternator produces Alternating curent whih is then converted into DC current with rectifiers/diodes as used in cars. When cars had generators (dynamos) in them you could test them by running a current into them and if they were ok the would turn like an electric motor.
Why is the battery light on in my 93 Crown Victoria It has a new battery and a new alternator.?
Since you replaced the battery and alternator, you must have had a problem before. Did you run a voltmeter on the battery while the engine is running? Should have around 14 volts. If you are getting around 14 volts, you can assume that the lite might be faulty. If you are getting say, 12 to 13 volts, then the alternator might be faulty, yes even sometimes rebuilt ones. Check all the wires to make sure there is good contact, also if you still have the problem, then you might have a broken wire ( somewhere ). Good luck
