How do you replace the alternator on a 1995 Toyota Celica ST?

Answer

There are three bolts involved. The top bolt located closest to the engine is your Pivot bolt. Loosen that bolt so the alternator will pivot downward when you unlock it. Speaking of unlocking, there is another bolt located on the bottom of the alternator, loosen and remove this bolt. Finally, on the front of the alternator there is a tension adjustment bolt. Loosen that until the belt clears the pulley so that you can remove it. You don't have to remove the tension bolt, just loosen it. Once the belt is removed make sure to disconnect any wire/plugs, etc from the alternator, remove the pivot bolt and viola! Installation is the reversal.

How do you adjust the alternator belt in a 1997 Honda Accord to make it stop squealing even when it seems to be tight enough?

Because the alternator puts a load on the engine of several horsepower, the belt must be very tight. However, if it is too tight, the bearings of the alternator shaft will wear out quickly. To tension the belt properly, adjust until there is about 1/2 inch of play in the center of the longest span. If this does not stop the squealing, the belt may have been glazed from being too loose, and needs to be replaced.

Will bad alternator cause 2.2L to stall?

Yes, once the battery looses it's charge the engine will stall. Check the voltage at the battery with a digital volt meter, engine running. You should read 13.5 to 15.5 volts. Any less and the alternator is bad.

Use volt meter to check 12 volt battery charge level?

With your volt meter, touch the positive battery with the red wire and black to ground (neg, ) on the battery. With the engine off you should have a reading of anywhere from 12.2 to 12.6 volts. That is good. With the engine running at high rev's you should have a reading of any where from 14 to 14.5. When you charge the battery with a 2 amp charger it will take several days and the charge level will go up to 14.5 or so volts.

If you are attempting to replace the alternator how do you release the belt tensioner on a 1988 Oldsmobile 98?

The alternator is sitting on a guide. It is held on it by a bolt. All you have to do is loosen that bolt and the belt pressure sould realese.

Look around for a wheel that is touching the belt but appears to have no other purpose...this is the tensioner. Use a long handled wrench on the nut in the middle of the tensioner.

there should be a diagram under the hood, in front of the radiator, that will show belt routing and show where the tensioner is...
