How do you change the alternator on a 2000 Lincoln LS V6?
The Alternator is located on the bottom half of the engine next to the passenger side front wheelwell. Alternator is easy to locate if car is on lift or ramps. Alternator will have 3 bolts that must be removed. Also you will need to loosen the belt by using a rachet and putting the head in the belt tensioner and rotating. Belt tensioner is located in the front of the engine. You will need to remove the induction system (black plastic tube that connects your intake manifold to air box). After the bolts have been removed you should be able to lower the alternator through the bottom. Reverse the steps to install new alternator. Stock alternator is 110amps, if you have a stereo system or anything electrical hooked up you may want to go with 130amp aftermarket alternator.

Do yourself a favor. When buying a New Alternator have them check it before taking it home? I had a bad incident that I ended up with, 3 bad alternators in one day, 3 different stores. Last store check it before I took it home and everything was good. I ended up changing it 3 times. Make sure they also change the pulley.

Removal & Installation
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Rotate the drive belt tensioner away from the drive belt and remove the drive belt from the alternator pulley.
3. Detach the electrical harness connectors at the alternator assembly.
4. Disconnect the positive battery cable and remove the nut and washer.
5. Remove 2 front alternator bolts.
6. Remove the rear alternator support bracket retaining bolts and the support bracket.
7. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.
To install:
8. Place the alternator in position and loosely install 2 front alternator retaining bolts.
9. Install the alternator bracket and 3 alternator bracket bolts. Tighten to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
10. Tighten 2 front alternator retaining bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
11. Connect 2 electrical hardness connectors to the alternator assembly.
12. Connect the positive battery cable and install the nut and washer. Tighten the nut to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
13. Rotate the drive belt tensioner away from the drive belt and install the drive belt on the alternator pulley.
14. Connect the negative battery cable.
15. Start the engine and check for proper charging system operation.

Well it could be the external regulator on the right side of the engine compartment or a bad alternator . First I would have the battery checked to verify the battery is good but only after fully charging it , then try replacing the regulator first because its cheapest and if the alternator is in fact bad it should be replaced with the alternator anyway. If the regulator doesn't help then It's probably safe to assume it would be the alternator. I've had a loose plug on the alternator also that would keep it from charging, you might wanna check that and all your connections first.

I'm not sure I understand your question. An alternator will have to produce 13 volts to charge a battery at 13 volts. Most alternators are able to produce 14+ volts but the range is 13.5 to about 15.5 volts.

I had the same problem. Try replace the cable/wires that lead from under the car to the positive and negative posts to the battery. This is a common problem for this car. Maybe defective wires were used when the cars were originally manufactured.

On a dodge alternator the two small wires go to the voltage regulator . It doesn't matter which wire goes where, but the red or blue wire needs 12 volts when the key is on. Your alternator will need to put out about 13.5 volts to charge your battry. It will need to over come the voltage of the battery to charge it. Check it with a meter set to DC volts. It may be able to keep up with little draw on it, but not with heater blower and lights on. So check with things on and off while the car is running. If the volts keep up to about 13.5 than it is probably ok. Some parts stores will check your battery and alternator for free.

I just went through this with my Windstar - stopped by my favorite Autozone and they did a pretty thorough electrical test, including the alternator and battery.
Most of the auto parts stores offer free testing.
Easiest thing to do is remove the positive connection to your battery if you Freestar stalls....Alternator is no good(just happened to me)
