You need to go to a car parts store, and get a repair manual for your car. They cost about $16.00 Or, go to a Public Library.

I just changed the alternator on a '96 Sentra - day one involved removal of old alternator - passenger side fan and overflow tank had to be removed. I left the rad hose as-is. The used $75 CDN alternator from recycler was not exactly the same. After a few frustrating hours trying to get the "new" one in, I realized that the casting boss near the idler was about half an inch wider, therefore the original 14 mm/M10 bolt was about half an inch too short. I went to a fastener store, bought a 40 mm long M10 bolt and thought I was in business, until realizing that the same thicker boss was also contacting the threads of the tensioner rod. A few minutes of filing off some material off the bottom of the boss provided the clearance required to no longer contact the tensioner bolt. As well, the tensioner was stuck in place, making belt replacement impossible. The alternator had to be removed again, the tensioner pulley 14 mm bolt loosened so that the pulley could be slid in its slot. We put the belt back on, and tightened the 14 mm tensioner pulley bolt, then the 8 mm tensioner rod and then the 14 mm tensioner set screw bolt. Frustrating, yes, but mostly because the replacement alternator wasn't exactly the same, so double check before installing. It will likely still work, but may need some minor modification.

Electrical fire or bad bearings. The alternator is probably toast. Buy a new one.

Remove the wiring harness from the back of your 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 alternator. Remove the belt from the alternator. Remove the alternator retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install your new alternator.

disconnect battery terminals.

remove upper radiator hose and manifold on block, debuckle the radiator to allow wiggle.

disconnect electrical wiring from alternator.

release alternator tension on belt, and remove tensioning device.

remove bolt holding alternator to block.

twist and wiggle alternator up between abs mess, radiator and motor.

if you do it yourself about 70.00 take it to a shop about 300.00

assuming you have the new alternator, make sure if your belt is warn you have a new one on hand, there are 2 bolts to be concerned with, the top one on the sliding bracket and the bottom one that holds the alternator, loosen the slide bracket bolt to free the belt, remove belt and the bolt. then remove the bottom bolt (might need a breaker bar for this). but new one in the way the old on came out. make sure you tighten the belt correctly on the alternator or it could fly off.

start by taking off the passager side tire unscrew the inner wheel well alternator should sit right in front of you (2) 15mm bolts and (1) 10 mm bolt. good luck

Be sure to chek for ground outs. that will drain a battery in no nime. usually doesnt happen but chek to make sure nothing is crossing the poles when the hood is down. check around starter, and into the fendors. these are typical ground sites.

block the tires and have the car on a flat surface then take the top two motor mounts out and push the car forward and the motor should roll forward there should be a hole in the side to put the bolt back in and hold the motor up. you should now have all the room you need

disconnect battery. remove electrical connections from alternator. remove serpentine belt. remove alternator mounting bolts and remove alternator. Installation is reverse of removal.

I'm about to do this myself in the next hour, for the first time, so don't treat this as gospel..! Appears to be just two bolts, surprisingly accessible, from the left side; top & bottom of alternator. Seems those get removed, tilt the alt forward and disconnect the wires... that's it - I sincerely hope. It even seems that the belt goes on without removing anything else, a bonus since I will likely replace that too.

What I can't find is the amps on mine; so I'll have to get the most and pay the extra if they turn out not to be needed... oh well.

All cars have a battery make the electrical components function. The charging system consists of a battery,starter an alternator and a voltage regulator. The battery turns the starter over causing the engine to run. As the engine is running the alternator produces electricityto keep it running. The voltage regulator keeps the current regulated so that the battery does not overcharge. ok, the forst answer was nearly correct except the starter motor is not part of the charging systm. the charging sytem consists of, the battery, the alternator,or generator,and thevoltage regulator. the voltage regulator is sometimes built into the alternator on newer cars ,where as they all used to be an extra equipment bolted onto firewall or inside fender

Disconnect the negative battery cable. There are two wires connected to the alternator remove them. Then remove the left drive axle or remove the left engine mount,place a jack under the ol pan, raise and support the engine. This will provide te space to remove the alternator because it is very difficult to remove it from the top side of the engine.Loosen the alternator bolts, slacken the belt, then alternator can now be removed from the space created.

You would find it in the front of the engine driven by the accessory belt.

The reason why it won't start is because its your alternator...... My uncles chev truck made the same kinda sound when his alternator went....

three bolts, tensioner bolt on bottom two bolts on top, the two on top are tough, three wires ground, power, and harness, locate all bolts and wires loosen to take off. it comes off easier than it goes back on

The alternator may be putting out some amps, but the regulator inside is failed. The alternator is the first thing to replace when the battery lamp comes on in these vehicles. Also make sure the battery is not leaking acid. Remove the positive and negative cables from the battery and look for corrosion. If corrision is found, you'll need to replace the battery and also take the battery cable covers off to clean the contact pads down to bare metal. Make sure all corrosion is removed. Russtech67
