Brake Fluid and Lubrication

Cars, trucks, motorcycles and even bicycles use hydraulic braking. Brake fluid is used to transfer the force applied into hydraulic pressure. In contrast, lubricants enable parts to move opposite each other in a perpendicular manner.

How do you change the brake master cylinder on a 1996 Toyota Corolla with abs?

Reverse procedure to install Make sure to "Bench Bleed" new master cylinder prior to installation

Does automotive brake fluid wear out or break down?

The brake fluid absorbs moisture (Water) and it allows the internal parts of the system to rust. However as the brake fluid absorbs the moisture it also degrade itself and leads to faulty braking ability.

Brake fluid should be changed and the system totally bled every 2-3 years depending on the stress put on the system.

Where does brake fluid go on a 1996 Mercury Sable?

Instead of trying to tell you the master cylinder is directly opposite of the brake pedal on the engine-side of the firewall - and the fluid goes there...

I'll suggest you download the Owners Manual and refer to the *illustrated* instructions there.

How do you get the air out of the brake lines on a 1998 Oldsmobile bravada pumping them continually does no good. brake falls to floor. i changed the master cylinder still no brake?

im having the same problem. ive pumped and pumped and it seems like i got a lot of air out but it just keeps coming. ive tried several methods and gone through many bottles of fluid, but the pedal just feels like mush and falls to the floor. if i pump and pump it builds up some pressure, but eventually drops.

Perhaps you guys should check the size of brake booster on the car, or perhaps type. If it is hydraulically-powered then the power steering pump is pushing out FAR too much pressure therefore making the brakes feel soft. If it is a vacuum style then perhaps it may be too big......

What kind of brake fluid should be used on 1971 VW superbeetle?

Any SAE certified brake fluid can be used in a 1971 VW super beetle. Virtually all automobiles. Use the same type of brake fluid.

When should you flush your brake fluid?

Most UK vehicles, the recommendation period is

two years for mineral brake fluid.

Silicon fluid should not need changing as it does not absorb water.

Do I have to bleed the brakes after I change a brake reservoir if it is still full of brake fluid?

Yes, bleeding the brakes removes air bubbles that might be left in the system, especially in the brake lines!

If not done every time the brake system is worked on the brakes will be unreliable and unsafe!

How much does an auto technician make?

With a automotive tech field being mostly 100% commission based obviously there is lots of room for variance. I would have to say 95% of technicians make 20k-105k a year gross. Probably 85% of technicians make 40-65k gross annually. Generally there is a "sweet spot" being a technician. Mostly all tech's making over the 55k mark are at a manufacturers dealership. These are (most of the time) higher trained and higher experienced tech's. Also, picking a brand like Kia or Hyundai will result in a lower commission rate. On the other side picking dealers like Audi, Mercedes, or even Lexus will result in a higher commissioned rate at the downside of having far less cars on the road to potentially service. In my personal experience as a career tech dealers like Ford, Chevy, and Honda have the best balance between commission rate and volume. Another thing important to a dealer employed tech is the ratio of customer paying work coming into the door compared to warranty work. Warranty work is better than no work but generally pays anywhere from 30-60% of what the same job would have been quoted to a customer.

What is the correct brake fluid for an 85 Mercedes 300D turbo diesel?

found my own answer elsewhere. Dot 4. I hope that helps someone else...

How do you flush brake fluid?

You can do it but you'll need someone to help you bleed the brakes.

First thing I'd do is make sure all the bleeder screws will open at the calipers. If so, you can proceed...if not, well.....

Get a turkey baster or some other thing to suck out the old brake fluid from the master cylinder. After doing that, fill with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid.
Have a helper sit in the drivers seat and start at the right rear caliper. Open the bleeder screw slightly and have your helper apply pressure to the brake pedal. Make sure your helper doesn't release the pedal with the bleeder screw open. Have him/her "hold" the pedal down until you've tightened the screw. Otherwise it will draw air into your brake system.

Close the bleeder and tell your helper to release the pedal. (You'll want to collect the old brake fluid in some kind of container.) DON'T LET THE MASTER CYLINDER RUN DRY OF BRAKE FLUID! Occasionally check the brake fluid level and keep bleeding the right rear caliper till it pumps out clean, fresh fluid. Go to the left rear caliper...do the same. Then the right front then the left front.
Again, Don't let the master cylinder run dry of brake fluid.

After you are all done, get some brake cleaner and spray down all the brake fluid that might have gotten on the calipers, pads, wheels, etc.

The key thing(s) is to flush out the old fluid, make sure the master cylinder stays full during the bleeding process, that your helper "holds" the pedal down until you've tightened the bleeder screw.
Do this and you'll be fine.

Good luck!

1992 Chevy Cheyenne - brake light on the dash board contantly flashing Brakes work and fluid is OK - need help?

Answer

This truck probably has Rear Wheel Anti-Lock (RWAL) brakes and the flashing light indicates there is a problem with the ABS. There is a small black module near master cylinder that is the brain for this system. There are ways to check for diagnostic trouble codes in this system. Once you have any codes set, diagnosis can be fairly simple. If you are not adept at this, take it to a pro.

PROCEDURE: Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) 's can be displayed by jumping terminals "A" and "H" of the Data Link Connector and observing the flashing of the "BRAKE" warning light. This should only be done when the brake lamp is "ON".

The terminals must be jumped for about 20 seconds before the code will begin to flash. Count the number of short flashes starting from the long flash. Include the long flash as a count. Sometimes the first count sequence will be short. However, subsequent flashes will be accurate. If there is more than one failure, only the first recognized code will be retained and flashed.

NOTES: DTC's 6, 9 and 10 will only turn the "BRAKE" lamp on while the fault exists. These are soft codes faults and can only be read with the Tech 1 scan tool.

Do not jump terminals "A" to "H" if the "BRAKE" lamp is not on. Jumping the terminals with the "BRAKE" lamp off will set a false DTC 9. This will turn the "BRAKE" lamp on and disable the antilock system.
