Car Starting Problems

Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

My 1999 Chevy Malibu wont start it is not my battery everything is working?

when you turn the key does it make a clicking sound? if the battery still comes on and everything works, but when you go to turn it it "clicks" that usually means its the starter

starter's are very easy to replace yourself, and they cost aroun 100 bucks

if you decide to take the maters into your own hand, you will have to first...

1: take the positive connector off your car battery

2: un plug the 02 sensor on your starter (usually not right on the starter, but on the cable that link to it, and usually covered in plastic)

3: unscrew all the cords etc. on the starter (battery cable) (sensor) etc..

4:unscrew the bolts connecting it to your car (usually just 2)

and remember where EACH individual screw goes

then take it to a car shop and they will check it our for free and tell you if its running or not, and if its not.. obviously buy a new one

it will usually cost around 150$ and then put it on your car by doing all those steps in reverse

good luck!

What ga wire is the fusible link?

Fuseable links in the automotive/truck and industrial world come in various wire gauge sizes due to the need to carry different current loads. The common size for most American cars build before to 90's is 14 gauge, but can vary if the car was heavily optioned with electrical devices that might be fed by the main wire. Normally this wasn't the case even though I have seen factory 12 and 16 gauge but they were rare.

How do you fix a 98 intrepid that dies seconds after you start it and the idle needle does not move when you start it AND AFTER A COUPLE OF TRIES IT DOESNT WANT TO TURN OVER AT ALL?

is your check engine light on? I had that happen to my car. It would turn on then "die". (The rpm needle would go all the way down, wouldn't move in drive) and it was because the car had no oil in it. It leaks like crazy o I always have to put more oil in along with this no-smoke anti-leak stuff. Also, check your ignition coil. It may need to be replaced.

What causes ignition problems?

I just baught 2004 toyota tacoma and radio didn't work. The radio worked after I replaced a 15AM burned fuse, later I noticed the key got stuck in the ignition which wasn't a problem before i replaced the burned fuse. The only way I got the key out of the ignition was after a removed the newly installed fuse. Now every time i wanna listen to music i have to plug back the 15AM fuse, and unpluge it to remove it from ignition,, good exercises lol.

Why do i have to Pump the gas to start car in cold?

You should never need to do that with an injected vehicle, and if it's not injected you might just need to adjust the choke. when you say "pump the gas" I assume you have a carbureted engine. The action of pumping cause the acceleration pump to put extra fuel into the intake manifold for cold weather starting. You may want to look at your choke system to insure it is closing when the engine gets cold. Theoretically you should only have to push down on the accelerator pedal one time to set fast idle speed, however as engines age, especially carburetted engines, carbon build up on the intake valves does not allow for proper atomization of the fuel in colder weather so it takes a few extra shots to accomplish this.

How do you know if your distributor needs to be replaced?

I would suggest replacing it if someome stole it - otherwise if your car is young -look for causes of poor spark operations in the plug wires and related spark supply components. Usually, a distributor needs to be replaced when it is worn or malfunctioning and repair or rebuild of the distributor in no longer possible, or would cost more than replacing it.

Where is the other end of negative battery cable connected to in 1988 Corvette?

Negative Battery Cable Termination Points

Since I have no experience with Corvettes, this answer will of necessity be generic in nature until a Corvette expert can improve it.

General Motors vehicles usually connect the "other" end of the Negative Battery Cable somewhere on the engine block.

Usually this is done under one of the heavy bolts used to secure the exhaust manifold on the battery side of the engine, or under one of the bolts attaching an auxiliary bracket [as for the pollution control air compressor, or an alternator bracket.

How do you dry a flooded engine in a grand am?

It depends on how badly the engine is flooded.

If you've solved the original problem you can always pull the plugs, purchase an air gun with a long extension tube, connect it to a compressor and blow each cylinder completely dry. Make sure you mark the sparkplug wires first, so you'll be able to get them back where they were.

Or... if it's just moderately flooded you can use some starting fluid to force the engine to start. Ether in the starting fluid is a lot more volatile and will burn when gasoline won't.

If it were me, I'd try the starting fluid first and if that doesn't work THEN I'd escalate to compressed air in the cylinders.

Where is the fuel filter located at on a 2000 Kia Sportage?

I just changed it on my '99. There is a special fuel line disconnect tool that fits under the disconnect and spreads the 4 prongs that hold the line on. I didn't have the right one so I went to AutoZone and bought one for $10 and took a grinder to it to make it short enough to fit between the filter and the connector. THEN it was a 5 minute job! Hope this helps, good luck!
