.A rotten egg smell coming out of the exaust

.Hesitation and/or bucketing when acceleration takes places

.Increase in engine running temp

.A ratteling in the muffler as car idles

.Car dying sparatically due to engine backpressure

.Difference in temperature from the back of the converter to the front due to clogging

I just filled my tank up with Premium Gasoline at Sunoco. I was almost empty and the highest octane pump sputtered and stopped at 12 gallons. I knew I needed more for a fill up so I finished up with 4 gallons of the next grade lower. I drove away, and about a mile down the road my car started losing power, sputtering, and jerking. I turned around and headed back to the station and just made it when my truck, a 1992 Ford Ranger, died. (It is in good shape with 130,00 miles and a recent computer diagnosis, lube, and compression test just 2 months prior). The temp gauge showed normal but there was a burning smell and white smoke coming from the catalytic converter. The mechanic suspected it was on fire. I suspected it was water in the gas that had not "ignited" and was now running through my exhaust and was sending off white steam. My truck wouldn't restart so I've left it there and am waiting to hear back. I've had bad gas twice before from a different station and my car lost power but never shut down like this. For both these episodes I ran STP through the tank for several fill-ups afterwards and performance returned to normal. This may not be an answer, but an educated observation from a former mechanic.

It is caused when the onboard computer detects a fault. Use a computer diagnostic scanner to find out which specific fault has been detected. Often the description of the codes is a bit obscure and it can take a little head-scratching and investigating to figure out what the cryptic message may mean. just go to autozone or any parts place and most of the time they have a scan tool and will let you use it to find out whats wrong. quick and ez and you are allredy at the store. the check engine light can come on for many different reasons. some reasons are minor (filled with gas while engine running) others can be bad (engine trouble). the best thing to do, if your car runs okay, disconnect the red battery terminal and reconnect. the check engine light should be off

It is clogged or you have a miss on the driver side bank of the engine which is causing raw fuel to be dumped into the converter where it is burning. If you find your engine is running fine and has no miss then the converter is clogged.

Folks that go to the dealer #1 or #2 a muffler shop that CLEARLY states "We only use Original Equipment OE parts. A shop willing to use a "universal fit" or "Aftermarket" is going to be hundreds of dollars cheaper than the first two options. The part will work the same in most cases.

It's usually the primary or last one even if you have pre cats since it does the most work. if you have a code it will tell you which O2 sensor it is which will help narrow it down. You could pressure test fore and aft of the cat by drilling small hole or use an infrared thermo to see if it's running extremely hot or hit it with a rubber mallet to see if contents inside have crumbled. A rotten egg smell (sulphur) is another sure sign. i may be mistaken, but I think only the honeycomb in the "real" cat can create the sulphur smell. The main thing is determine cause of break down if it has happened. Usually car has to be dumping too much fuel to kill a cat, which means something else is not kosher with mixture probably something in engine management controlling ratio.

however a 1994 is obd 1 so it only has a precat sensor. The computer would never even know you pulled your cat except for "SLIGHTLY" reduced backpressure on the exhaust calves

Cold Exhaust, warm up to ease removal. Hot Exhaust, cool down to touch. Disconnect O2 Sensor Plug. Soak threads with PB blaster & wait a bit for the stuff to work through. With the help of a O2 Sensor tool or a 22 mm(7/8") Crow Foot, remove Sensor. Clean threads on exhaust(wire brush, etc). Put anti-seize compound on the new Sensor's threads: Be very careful not to put any on the probe, just the threads! Install Sensor & torque to specs(?30 lb-ft?). Reconnect plug.
