I have a 2001 Prism, and all i did was replace the spark plugs, and reset the battery it went away....

the light is a warning to you that something is wrong and your engine is not operating correctly and needs to be serviced soon. Most times there is a part of the emissions systems that set it off, like a bad sensor somewhere. You will need to get the CODES read. The codes are then converted to a diagnostic problem and then the parts of that system need to be analyzed to see which one is not operating. I will ask this....did you just recently get gas? You must turn the gas 3 clicks when you put it back on to make sure the correct pressure is in the gas tank otherwise you will get a check engine light. So go check your gas cap and if it is tight.........then you will need to take your car to a place liek Autozone and they will put a diagnostic scan tool on your car usually under the dash under the steering column and pull your codes. From there it is up to you where you decide to get it fixed, either by yourself or a garage. By the way after you tighten the gas cap you will need to drive some miles AND go thru a few stop and start cycles with the engine befoer the service engine light goes out if it was a gas cap issue. The light will not automatically turn off after you tighten the cap.

Quite often it's the oxygen sensor but you can't possibly know for certain until you use a code scanner. You can borrow, rent or buy a code scanner at most auto parts retailers. Most of the OBD2 code scanners (that's what your vehicle uses) are pretty easy to use and will tell you what's wrong in a somewhat usable message. Service engine light means only one thing servie the engine well fisrt off if you have an exhaust leak or vaccum leak wont cause the light to come on but you will LACK POWER! first does it lack power all the time or when you push the accelorator 2 is it an auto or standard.

8)low octane V8 you can not cheap out on gas use 93 octane or you will get spark knocks and blow engine

9)Low or uneven cylinder compression. Caused by high milage and racing

10) vaccum leak in intake manifold which is not cheap.

There are several questions I would like the answers to in order to attempt to help you. Was there an accident or impact with something that caused the coolant to leak out? How long did she drive with this light on? You have a duty to mitigate your damage. What was the exact reason they denied the claim, they have to give you this specific reason in writing. If the vehicle lost it's coolant and she drove till she locked up the motor, and there was no accident/impact/loss, then there wouldn't be any coverage. If however she hit something in the road that knocked the bottom of the radiator tab off (for example) and drove a short distance not knowing there was damage and the motor siezed, there may be. i have a 92 euro lumina... and my problem was similar but i don't know if it could be the same. I had an electrical problem so some of the time the car could start and roll down the street fine, and other times it would shut off. The problem happened because a wire on the engine had rubbed through a main power cable and thus shorted the car out when you did almost anything. I hope that's not the problem in some ways... because it is a pain to find and fix. Good luck with it though!

The service engine soon light comes on when there is a problem with the engine or transmission. They are both monitored and controlled by a computer. You will need to take the car to a shop or AutoZone can read the codes for free. This will at least tell you what area is setting the light.

It could possibly be your mass air flow sensor is dirty. Go to autozone and buy mass airflow sensor cleaner, take the sensor off the car right next to the air filter on the passenger side under the hood on the intake with a screw driver. Read the directions on the cleaner carefully, apply the cleaner to the sensor. The car may run rough for a few days then clear up and the restricted performance light should go off. If the restricted performance light doesn't go off and the car still runs rough take it to auto zone and have them put it on their computer free of charge and it will more than likely still say it is the mass air flow sensor, which means the sensor is bad and needs to be replaced. The cleaner is around ten dollars and the new sensor is about $160.00, but let the cleaner work it may feel like the car is falling apart after the sensor is cleaned but dont take any action unless the car still runs rough after a week to a week and a half.

uneven or non true surface of 1 or all surfaces, wich can cause a bad seal. or a carburetor that you have had rebuilt by 2 separate people but still it is still not working properly ( like my self )

You need a scan tool to reset light after repairing the code.

The manifold gasket is the same as the plenum gasket. The manifold gasket is a barrier between the manifold and the engine block.
