How do you add horsepower to a 305?
You can use headers, but be sure they can flow easily. max out your carb using a 600 cfm (if you go bigger it may constantly flood and stall) Holly or your pick of a good 4bbl, be sure the carb has a large well breathing air cleaner. Most mufflers reduce horsepower... try running straight pipes like stock cars. THAT WILL IMPROVE HP.. but could get you a ticket. After, change your stock intake to a 1500-6500rpm instead of most stocks that only go 1500-4500. Next, go with racing spark plugs. Then believe it or not, Ive been trying a octane boost mixture created my the NOS system..it works GREAT. all this is easy to do and most beginners can do it all
How do you replace the belt tensioner on a Chevy 305 motor?
Remove the belt, Remove one bolt out of the fulcrum part of the tensioner and remove the tensioner; reverse the precedure.
How do you find the top dead center on your engine?

The timing mark being at 0 is one way but another way and to inshure that it is at absolute top dead center, depending on the engine and if the plug hole is straight over the piston as oposed to the side and at an angle, (in whitch case you just need to be more careful not to catch the object used in a pintch ) Anyway place a screwdriver or slim straight long object thru the opening were the no. 1 plug is (in a four cyclender that would probably be the plug nearest the belt pully on the crankshaft, oposit/furtherest from the rotor cap )((DONT USE the starter for this !!! ) and hand turn with breakerbar or via the alternator pully while continuing to hol the screwdriver/object straight up ((you decide how just get err done.)) Continue turning until that screwdriver is at its highest point and you got it.(rock easly back and forth to find that true up position if necessary ) As for the valves being on fire and not exhaust if you know were #1 plug wire is on the distribitor and it lands there when your screw driver is up, well there it is, perfect top dead center and on #1 plug ready to fire. amen. P.S. You could also use a light or if you are rich , a fiber optic viewing device, and simply look into the Number 1 Plug hole and whatch for it to come all the way up.SpyResearch...search for the piston stop method, do not trust an answer from a person that can not even spell.

How much money do you have? The 305 Chevy is not a good starting point. You would be much better off finding a good 350 and work with that small block. The power is only limited by the amount of money you want to spend.
If your 305 isn't using oil and you are rebuilding engine should you replace rings?
It would be wise to replace the rings while you have it apart.
Need to deglaze the cylinder walls and install a new set of STEEL Rings.
Do not use CHROME RINGS because they will not seat. And it will use oil then.
Why are you rebuilding the engine in the first place? If parts of the engine are worn it would be reasonable to assume that the rings and/or cylinders are also worn. To do it right, have the cylinders tested for "taper", that will show you how much wear the cylinders have experienced, and if there is much taper you'll need to bore the engine and replace the pistons/rings. Tapered cylinders mean that the rings will constantly be moving against the piston ring groves.
Also, check the piston ring groves for wear. If the ring grove is excessive the pistons will fail soon and the money you put into the rebuild will be wasted.
Personally, I would never rebuild an engine without AT LEAST replacing the rings, even if there is no appreciable cylinder taper, and experience suggests that it's not even a good idea to reuse pistons. Odds are against an engine lasting very long if you reuse pistons that have much use.

dont know about the emissions stuff but if your planning to swap engines the ECM will also have to be switched as the 267 ECM will not work on the 305
Where are the freeze plugs on a 1998 GM 305?
There are 8 plugs:
There are 2 plugs in the back of the engine were the transmission bolts to the engine. You will need to remove transmission or pull engine to fix those.
There are 2 plugs on each side of the engine just above were the oil pan bolts onto the engine. 1 on each side is hidden behind the motor mounts. There is 1 hidden behind the starter. The other one on the driverside you can see good.
There are 2 in the very front of the engine, 1 on each side of the timing cover and they are hard to see. Will have to remove a lot of stuff off the front of engine to get to those. And that makes 8. Caution If you do replace the 2 on the back of engine, the bigger plug in the CENTER of the block is a cam plug. Leave it alone, do not touch there is no coolant behind it. NEUTZ.
Why does my truck lose power when it reaches high RPMs?
trucks especially are designed for low rpm power and torque. i would suspect a cam,intake and exhaust modification would take care of this. possibly a set of heads,too.

if it would fit on there it probably wouldn't run the greatest. putting 305 heads on a 265 make the combustion chamber bigger, which causes a loss in compression... i wouldn't do it if i was you

i believe that any 454 bbc head will bolt up to any 454 Block. But some heads are beter then others. I would find out the specs of the head before installing.
