Loosen the distributor, and turn it counter clockwise. This should be done with a light in measurable amounts.

Usually the bottom sprocket has the dot on the top and the top sprocket has the dot on the bottom.

I did encounter one once that had both dots on the top, so be aware of that possibility when you are setting the valves.

If the engine is at #1TDC, both dots should be aligned, #1 cylinder would have both valves closed, #6 would have the exhaust valve open. If that's not what you see, rotate the crankshaft one turn and check again.

No. There isn't enough material in a 305 to bore that far oversize without hitting water.

Remove the #1 spark plug, hold your finger over the hole, and rotate the engine forward by hand until you feel compression coming out the hole. At this point the timing mark will be approaching the timing tab. Align the mark with 0 and you're close enough for most things except a degree wheel.

no... you don't want to mix diesel and gas engine parts if its not an exact match you can mess your engine up....

in most cases yes. you might have to block off egr ports or something of that nature but they make the plate that bolts on to cover that port. i put the same set up on a 350 out of a caprice and it runs great. if you still need the egr you will just need to hook up a vacuum hose. in most cases they don`t pop your hood at an emissions check so using the egr is up to you.

5 QTS. with a new filter.

Replace intake manifold water temp. sensor that's by the thermatstat housing. Next replace your oxygen sensor ---they are 80% of flooding problems,If that fails Check your TBI sensors,egr

The question was 305cc , not 305 cubic inches (5000cc) . 305 cc is about 18.6 cubic inches So this does not refer to a car engine. This size engine as used in a snowblower usually develops 8-11 horsepower , the same size engine in a high performance motorcycle could develop 25 -50 horsepower.

start with center bolts and work your way out in a circular patternaltenating from side to side

On the 305 engine the number one plug position is the first one on the right side while you are facing the engine.

vacuum break probably sticking, or the vacuum line came off ur vacuum break---

if u have ur vaacuum diagram, look at it (vacuum break should b by/on the carb), look at the levers/shafts connected to it, and try moving those for starters. this mite get it to start the process of getting ur idle down. also, go to lowes, or fleet farm (farm supply stores are relatively inexpensive), or a parts store(expensive here) and get some CARB CLEANER. ($3? or so)

WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING, AND THE AIR FILTER AND CAP OFF THE CARB(probably have to take 2 or so vacuum hoses off), spray JUST A LIL SQUIRT right into your carb. its going to bog(richen) your motor, but its going to loosen stuff up. do this a few times.

squirt your levers/rods by the choke, carb, throttle body, etc. my opinion is that your vacuum break is stickin...but do all this anyway.

if u run out of carb cleaner...dont fret. shut your motor off n grab that wd-40 to spray those levers/rods THAT ARE NOT 'INSIDE' OF YOUR CARB. it'd b a good idea put put a clean rag/towel over your carb when doing this

An oldie, but a goodie- have fun.

The ignition timing is 4 degrees before top dead center. Adjust the point dwell to 30 degrees and the adjust the idle speed. then disconnect the vacuum to the vacuum advance and set the timing. Reconnect the vacuum and fine tune the carburator.

With an upgrade to electronic ignition and with running todays gas (low octane) a bump up in timing would be recomended. Try running about 6 degrees after and see how it does would not go above 12 after.

put on top dead center on number 1 cylinder(driver side front)and slip dist in hole slowly turning at bottom until it seats all the way down.Make sure rotor is pointing at number 1 not 6 plugwire, if it is raise up a couple inches and turn rotor 180 degrees and set again.very simple to do.

350 Small Block. i like my 305 5.0 - better gas milege.

Not on most vehicles. You might have to pull the radiator on a big V-8, but it should not be necessary to pull the engine.

Not really. Exterior dimensions are the same, and everything bolts on the same, but the bore is different which requires different pistons.
