Will 1997 350 vortec heads work on a 383?
Yes they will. The limiting factor of these heads are the valvesprings. You cant run anything over .470 lift unless you get a set of beehive Comp cam springs or get the valveguide machined to use a regular SBC Gen 1 spring. These heads stop flowing around .515 lift any more lift than that and it cant flow anymore through the head. These heads would work great on a 383 for towing.
Why is the tbi 350 better than the 305?
the 350 is better. depending on the year of your truck it may be the biggest motor avalible without going diesel. I have a 94 Chevy longbed single cab with a TBI 350 in it with straight pipes and it'll move

Where is the oxygen sensor located on a 1986 Chevy C10 305?
Check up by the manifolds or anywhere before the catalytic converter.
How do the engine coolant sending unit and the coolant temperature sensor work together?
The sending unit is only to control the temperiture warning light/gauge on your dash. If you are referring to the sending unit in your overflow tank it just turns your low coolant light on. The temperiture sensor is used to feed engine temperiture data into the computer, to caculate how much fuel the engine will get during cold start up etc. It is simply input data for the computer.

What is the torque specs for rocker arm on a 1986 305 Chevy?
1/2 turn can be a bit too much- try 1/4 turn. That's what I've always done- tried 1/2 once, valves would not close properly. 1/4 turn works good. what you do is hold the rod with one had then you wiggle it up and down while tighting the rocker, soon the rod will not be able to move up and down, now you turn one half turn. this will put it about at the right specs.
What is the firing order for a 1991 Chevy Caprice?
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 You can go to autozone.com and look this stuff up for free under specifications.
What is the right way to wire up a starter on a sb Chevy?
The large post in the center of the solenoid is for the main lead coming from the battery, the two 12 guage wires coming from the alternator, and one side of the momentary switch used for the start circuit (usually coming from the ignition switch) Since this post is always hot, you can also use it to drive other circuits that need full battery voltage. The small post closest to the engine is for the other side of the momentary switch.
What happens if you over tighten a oil filter?

might twist the gasket.

wrenches are only for removing.
yes, it will fit, but nothing will hook up, including the transmission
How do you set the timing on a 1986 Chevy truck with a 305 engine The engine backfires times?
start here clean the line on the harmonic balancer and mark it with white out,so you can easily see it with a timing light.than clean the timing chain cover so you can see the degree marks it will say like 6420246 left is retarded and right is advanced, than there should be a sticker on the rad support saying what the timing should be set at for example it will say 8degrees with trans in park or neutral at idle, if its carbourated remove the vacuum advance hose from the distributer and plug it off so that the distibuter has no vacuum advance,if its fuel injected than you will have to disconnect what will be a purple wire in the main engine harness, this will be located on the left Sid eof the firewall if you are looking at the engine from the front of the vehicle.than start the engine and inspect the white line on the harmonic with the timing light, than simply move turn the distibuter until you can put that white line with the correspnding timing located on the rad support.once done so tighten the 9/16 bolt under the distibuter to ensure that it will not move.
What is the difference between a Chevy 305 and a Buick 305?

Where is the temperature sending unit located for a 1993 Chevrolet caprice?

What is the maximum RPM on a 1983 Chevy 305?
around 5,500. but it does depend on alot of things. how many miles are on it. if it has been rebuilt what kind of parts were used (forged, cast, etc..) but for a stock 305 i would never run it over 5,500. but also you have to take into consideration that a fairly stock 305 will make peak torque at around 4,000 and peek H.P. at about 4,800-5,000. so reving it any higher isn't gaining you much. hope this helps
Valve adjustment procedure on Chevy 305?
With the engine at operating temp, remove a valve cover and start the engine (Note: there will be oil coming out of the pushrods and spraying onto the exhaust manifold, so work quickly). Using a ratchet with a fairly long extension, one at a time, slowly back off the rocker nut until the lifter starts rattling. Slowly tighten the nut until the noise stops, then at 1/4 turn intervals, tighten the rocker nut down one full turn. When all 8 are finished, kill the motor, install the valve cover, then repeat the procedure on the other side.
If the heads have just been installed, they are adjusted with the engine off. Turn the engine to TDC #1 (aligning the timing mark, but ensure both valves are closed - look at #6 - they should have the exhaust valve just closing and the intake opening, #3 should have its intake open), then work on the #1 valves. Back the rocker nut off until the pushrod is loose, then tighten the nut until the pushrod no longer can be spun freely, then turn the nut one full turn. Do that to both the #1 intake and exhaust. Turn the crank 1/4 turn, then repeat for #8. Turn the crank another 1/4 turn and repeat for #4, then 3, 6, 5, 7, and 2. If it was done properly, they should be exactly correct with an engine running adjustment, but it is wise to check them all with it running.
timing fire order or mechanical failure
Does the firing order for a 1981 305 Chevy go clockwise or counter clockwise on the distributor?
Rotor turns clockwise.
Sounds like you are putting more fuel through your engine than it can burn when cold and possibly a timing issue as well. Make sure that the timing is set at manufacturer specs and then adjust the carburetor jets to specs as well ( there will be an initial setting like one and a half turns out from closed ) and fine tune it from there. Before starting make sure that all plugs are gapped properly to specs as well, clean, and none of the wires are touching each other or laying across metal, use separators.
