Where is the transmission dipstick located on a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier?
the above answer that a manual transmission has no dipstick may not be entirely accurate. many manual transmissions (including that in my 1993 cavalier VL 5sp.) do have a dipstick for checking the manual transmission fluid. jack the car up and check the rear end of the transmission, just below the level of the CV axles. look for a plastic cap with an "L" shape to it hanging over the back end of a plateau on the transmission casing. that will be the fill cap for your manual transmission, and should have a small dipstick attached to the end of it for measuring the amount of fluid in the transaxle. it is true that some transmissions are completely sealed and will not have this plug.

How do you install brake pads on a Chevy Cavalier?
Prep: Pop the hood and take off the brake fluid reservoir top( this will allow the caliper piston to be pushed back)
Tools: Large Allen wrench, med/large flat-head screw driver, STAR attachment
Assuming that you know how to take to tire off:
For the front left, turn the wheel all the way to the left ( help you get a better view) place a flat head screw driver between the rotor and the old brake pad, this make take a few mins. but your goal is to push the piston back so that it is flush or as far back as it can go.
Next, you are looking for 2 bolts these are hex bolts (they are not hex bolts. They are *STAR* bolts that are shaped like an asterisk* and require a special star tool you can get at any automotive parts store), unscrew the bolts and remove the caliper from around the rotor. The pad closest to the engine of the car just pops out of the piston ( the hollow circle that you pushed back) the other pad will take a little prying with your flat head screwdriver, but it is relatively easy to take off as well.
Next Simply replace the old pads with the new ones. When installing the new pads ensure that the shape of the pad is angled in the same way as the rotor.
Finally, place the caliper back on the rotor and tighten the screws back up and replace the tire... be sure to put the cap back on the brake fluid reservoir
Doing the right side is exactly the same with the exception of turning the wheel the opposite direction to get the best view..
==a tip when trying to push the piston back on the brake calipers, is to take a small c clamp and attach it to the caliper, leave the old inside brake pad in, to prevent damage to your piston, turn c clamp slowly, until piston bottoms out, and when replacing brake pads, a rule of the thumb is to have your rotors turned down, but its best to just replace them, since turning them down cost about 20 bucks, new ones cost about 30, and i never did have very good luck with turning them down, they seem to warp again!! god luck
How do you install the rear brakes of a 1998 Chevy Cavalier?
What you'll need.1. A set of brake shoes.2. A brake kit.3. Pliers.4. Sledge Hammer (maybe)5. Needle nose pliers.6. Spray can of brake cleaner (it's like carburetor cleaner).7. Spray can of brake silencer.7. High-temperature grease.8. Possibly new drums.
The brake kit contains the springs and other stuff for the rear brakes. Change one side at a time. Do the driver's side first.1. Remove the plastic lug caps.2. Slightly loosen the lugs. (Do this before jacking up the car)3. Jack up the car.4. Place car on a jack stand. Safety first.5. Remove the lug nuts.6. Remove the wheel.7. Remove the drum. If it is difficult to remove, get the sledge hammer and give the drum a good whack. Strike the drum with a swing toward the midline of the car, not away from it--as if you're bashing the drum on. The drum should pop back off slightly, and you should be able to slide it off. Don't try to pry it off, you'll chip the edge of the drum and bend the metal backing.8. Look carefully at the way the brake springs are set up. And take note. Also, inspect the wheel cylinder at the top of the brakes for leaks. If leaking you should buy an new one.9. There is a tension spring connecting the tops of the shoes to one another. Remove that spring w/ the needle nose pliers.10. Remove the shoes.11. Remove the two springs facing you. They are each on a brass post that pass through the metal backing. On the opposite side of the metal backing hold the posts with your finger so the posts don't turn. Grasping the small disc with the pliers, push in on the disc and give a 1/4 turn, it'll pop right off the post. (Mechanics have a nifty tool they use for this, suckers like us settle for using the pliers)12. Remove the star wheel post (it think its called the actuator).13. Clean everything you're re-using with the brake cleaner. Throw out the old stuff.14. Clean the actuator and when dry, grease the actuator threads.15. If reusing the drums, dust out the inside of the drum. Careful, do not breathe the dust in!16. Spray the inside of the drum with the brake quiet. It'll fill in the pits and imperfections so your brakes don't squeak.17. To install do these steps in reverse. Just be sure that the brake lever engages the star-wheel on the actuator. This is what keeps your brakes in close contact with the drum as they wear out.
Also, you may find the drum a little difficult to work on over the new shoes, but don't be afraid of using a little force.
TIPIf you have a camera on your mobile phone, take a picture of the brake spring set up once you remove the drum. It is a handy reference. If you don't have one, you always have the passenger side brake setup to refer to.
It is normal to smell the brakes for a few miles after installing new shoes. But if it continues for more than a day, you may have a problem.

Why is the left headlight dim even after changing the bulb and checking the fuses?
Usually, when one headlight is dimmer than the others, it is a loss of ground that is the culprit. Check for loose or corroded connections. If all else fails, a new ground wire can be run from the effected lamp to a grounding source (frame/engine). I've had this problem for years. If you find a solution please let me know. I've ripped up the wiring from just beneath the driver headlamp all the way to the other lamp. I've found tons of rotted connections, fixed them, but never the original problem. Still looking!
check your fuse for that headlight even if it is blown it will still get power because of the way the circuit is set up it is called a sneak circuit . power backfeeds through the lights causing this condition.

How is the headlight changed on a 2000 Chevy Cavalier?
With the hood open, you will see a long ( probably ) black flat flexible plastic cover running across the front of the upper frame. It is riveted in ,, with plastic rivets. Cut the plastic rivets off with a pair of wire cutters ( or other suitable tool ) ,, and remove the plastic cover. ( This cover can be left off if you want to in order to make it easier to change a headlight bulb next time. Or you can put it back on with new plastic rivets. I used real bolts to put it back on so that I could take them out easily next time. ) You will then see two top-mounted bolts holding the Headlight And Sidelamp Assembly in place which can easily be accessed and removed. Removing the bolts will loosen the entire Headlight and Sidelamp Assembly. Sometimes the entire Assembly can then be lifted up slightly and pulled forward. ( There are tabs on the bottom of the Headlight Assembly that fit into holes in the car frame. ) However, if it does not come out easily, you will have to separate the Headlight Section from the Sidelamp Section. There is a plastic "latch" that holds the Sidelamp Section to the Headlight Section. It can be accessed with a large screwdriver through a slot in the top of the Headlamp And Sidelamp Assembly ,, near the outer side. Use a flashlight to look down into the slot, and use the screwdriver to pry the latch back slightly. Be careful not to pry it too far. It is plastic, and it will break fairly easily. Once this latch is pressed back, you can release the Headlight Section ,, which can then be lifted slightly and pulled forward. Both the Headlight Section and the Sidelamp Section must be pulled forward. There is a long plastic part on the Sidelamp Section that slides into a metal hole in the Fender. It will break if you try to pry the Sidelamp Section out sideways. The Bulb Assembly twists out of the back of the Headlight Assembly, and the bulb can then be replaced. Be careful not to touch the bulb with your hands ,, or with any grease. Use a clean rag instead. Grease will make the new bulb burn out more quickly. Nearly all of these parts are made out of plastic, and will break fairly easily. So go at this carefully and patiently. It sounds a little complicated, but once you learn how, the whole job only takes about 20 minutes. A little Vasiline on the plastic parts ,, and on the bolts ,, makes reassembly go even faster and smoother ,, as well as making it easier to do next time. Good luck.
Check your fuel cap or gas tank for leaks, or maybe the gas lines.
