This is one of the easiest headgaskets out there to change! I recommend a mechanic w/ experience though! You do not want to get in over your on this type of repair.

Beware...I found a good buildup of coolant muck at the no. 4 cylinderwater jacket. This is where my gasket leaked...I suspect local overheating.

With all due respect, you must purchase the appropriate manual for your vehichle. That said, '87-92 Chevy cavs are some of-if not THE- easiest cars to work on and require the least amount of steps to replace their head gaskets. You will need a full set of tools including the belt tensioner tool and a torque wrench and a good jack/jackstands. If you have all of this the step-by-step procedure in the manual can be followed with little or no difficulty. Start by cleaning the visible engine areas with degreaser and a cloth and by labeling all vaccum and fuel lines before you start so your hands are clean and the labels will be read once your done (nothing worse than a greasy, illegible label to confuse matters once you're putting everything back together). Have several small boxes (shoe boxes are great) labeled "front" and "rear" ready first so that any parts can be easily stored, taken inside for cleaning, then set aside for re-assembly. Label your spark plug wires and buy new plugs (and wires too..why not) and a new thermostat so that you know that your repaired gasket/engine has no other points of failure. My manual shows 19 steps for removal and 19 steps for re-assembly but remember...one step could be more complicated than it reads and a more complete explaination of each step can be cross-referenced in subsequent manual chapters. Manuals are about $15 and only the simplest jobs (ie, window cleaning and tire inflation) should be attempted without a manual.

Yes, replacing the booster is fairly easy. Just remember to bleed the brakes if you have to remove a brake hydraulic line. Bleed in this sequence. RR-LR-RF-LF

First unplug the fan. Second remove the bolts on the out side of the plastic fan shroud, the motor and fan blade are connected to this then remove the whole unit out of the car. Then remove the bolt that's connecting the fan blade to the motor, these bolts usually are reverse threads to you have turn the bolt to the right to remove it. i know it sounds crazy. Then the motor should come free of the plastic shroud and the blade. finally reverse the steps.

First, the best thing to do is go over to the parts store and pick up an ignition lock cylinder WITH KEYS. Then take off all parts of the dash that cover up your cylinder. Then look at the new one find where the little button is to push. Put the keys in the ignition, turn it to the on position (battery disconnected), push the pin in and it will come right out by pulling on the key

THE THERMOSTAT IS LOCATED IN THE BACK OF THE MOTOR. LOOK UNDER THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. YOU WILL FIND THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING. YOU MUST LOOSEN THE THE INTAKE TUBE THAT RUNS UNDER THE MOTOR AND ATTACHES TO THE HOUSING. THERE IS ONE BOLT THAT SCREWS INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE MOTOR. ONCE YOU HAVE THAT LOOSENED TAKE THE TWO BOLTS OUT OF THE HOUSING. THIS CAN BE REACHED FROM THE TOP OF THE ENGINE. LOOK DOWN BETWEEN THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND YOU WILL SEE THE TWO BOLTS. MAKE SURE WHEN YOU TAKE THE HOUSING APART YOU FEEL HOW THE THERMOSTAT GOES IN IT WILL SEEM UPSIDE DOWN COMPARED TO REPLACING A NORMAL ONE ON A ENGINE. THIS IS NOT EASY TO DO BUT CAN BE DONE. ONCE THE THERMAOSTAT IS REPLACED MAKE SURE YOU GET THE AIR OUT OF THE COOLANT SYSTEM. THIS CAN BE DONE BY WHATS CALLED BURPING THE SYSTEM. FIND A RADIATOR HOSE AND SQUEEZE IT SEVERAL TIMES WITH THE RADIATOR COOLANT CAP OFF. LET THE MOTOR HEAT UP WITH THE HEATER RUNNING AND REPEAT. THIS SHOULD BE ALL YOU NEED TO DO.

First pop off the fuse panel cover on the left side of the dash. Then the same panel on the right. Each panel exposes a black screw. Remove the single Phillips head screw in the center of the heater/defrost grill located in the center of the dash near the windshield. Gently pry out the grill exposing 2 more black screws. Using a 7 mm. nutdriver, remove the 2 screws behinds the end panels. Then the 2 screws under the heater/defrost grill. Then open the glove box and remove 3 more black screws. Finally, 2 more 7 mm. gold colored screws also through the glove box which secure the air bag cover. Gently lift up on the dash panel releasing the snap clips.
