Where is the camshaft position sensor located on a 1997 Chevy C1500?

depending on what motor u have. on v6 it should be on the bottom of the motor, front passenger side, just behind the harmonic balencer. it is kind of hard to see. what i did was get on a creeper and barely get under the front end of the truck and look above the steel beam right behind the bumper and look for the wires that go to it. it will probobly be pretty dirty and hard to see. depending on what motor u have. on v6 it should be on the bottom of the motor, front passenger side, just behind the harmonic balencer. it is kind of hard to see. what i did was get on a creeper and barely get under the front end of the truck and look above the steel beam right behind the bumper and look for the wires that go to it. it will probobly be pretty dirty and hard to see.

If it is an external regulator, it should be located on the driver's side of the engine compartment in between the headlight and radiator. It has a square cover and a plug with four positions on it.

Can you swap a 4.3L v6 from a 93' Chevy Cheyenne with a stock 5.7L strait over or will you need a new trans or just a bell housing or is it possible?

To be sure call any salvage yard and ask them to check this in their HOLLANDER cross reference. Then you will know for sure. The trans will work fine and bolt up, the harness should also work. You will need to get the v8 motor mounts and the ecm from the v8 otherwise the computer will limit the rpms at about 4800 rpm. The fan shroud must also change to a shorter version, the starter may be different depending on the flywheel.
