Essentially, they are the same, pressurised gas in a closed cylinder forcing a piston along which turns a crank via a con rod converting linear to rotary force.

The main difference is how the pressurised gas is delivered:

In an internal combustion engine, fuel and air are sucked into the cylinder, valves are closed, fuel/Air is ignited, combustion takes place, heat makes pressure.

So the pressure by combustion is created inside the cylinder (internally)

In an external combustion engine, the gas is pressurised prior to entering the

cylinder, in the case of a (piston) steam engine, water is boiled (by coal or other fuel combustion) in a closed container (boiler) to create pressurised steam, which is then delivered to the cylinder under pressure.

So the pressure by combustion is created outside the cylinder (externally)

A diesel engine fires from compression and not from a spark. A diesel engine is also built much stronger than a gasoline engine. Diesel engines normally have less horsepower than a gasoline engine but have much more torc, or pulling power.

Well yes you can swap any engine into any vehicle that you choose. Swapping in the neon motor would require the PCM, wire harness, motor, trans, and possibly the key switch ( if your neon had the SKIM anti theft system, unless you go stand alone fuel management and eliminate the stock PCM ). The funny part about this is that Im considering the opposite dropping a chevy 3.1 and 5spd from a 89 cavalier z-24 into my 2001 Plymouth neon. I just think the chevy motor is way more reliable then the the 2.0L.

well just imagine that you are building a car, or a train or an airplane and the metal you use for something starts to rust, if that's near the engine or something that leads to the engine than it could put set the car a light.

take the car to auto zone or a parts place that will check your computer codes for free because at least one of those codes is active and causing the light to stay on. they should be able to tell you the code and its meaning so that will bring you closer to fixing it.

Oil is used to lubricate the engine and some is splashed on the cylinder wall and pistions to lubricate those also!

But while that is happening, some oil gets past the pistons and into the combustion chamber were is is burnt along with the fuel.

Only a minute quantity is lost, but the more you run your car, the more oil gets lost, so you have to top-up the oil before it gets to the empty level.

Also, black soot from the burnt fuel get past the pistons in the opposite direction, which is why new oil changes from being yellow in colour to black.

the only sure way is to remove the cylinder head and measure the diameter of the piston cylinder muliplied by the length of the piston stroke(how far it travels from bottom to top) this will give you the cubic inch (or cubic centimeters depending what country your are in) of ONE cylinder multiply that by the number of cylinders to give the total engine displacment (Size).
