Why do radio altimeter have 2 antennas where as weather radar have 1?

  • A RADAR altimeter must have 2 antennas (one transmit, one receive) so that it can operate continuously making altitude measurements by matching modulation and carrier phase of received signal with transmitted signal.
  • A weather RADAR needs only 1 antenna because it operates in a pulsed multiplex mode: the antenna is used as a transmitter antenna to send a short pulse of carrier, then is used as a receiver until the last possible reflection from the furthest distance could return. During this time the antenna has rotated only a tiny amount. The transmit/receive multiplex cycle continues as the antenna rotates 360 degrees.
  • A targeting RADAR operates much like the weather radar but it sweeps back and forth over a limited angle instead of in a full 360 degree circle. (e.g. 120 degrees, 90 degrees, 60 degrees, 45 degrees)

How long did it take to create battleships for World War 2?

About 3 years for a WWII modern steel battleship.

Notes:

Note that most Battleships and Cruisers were produced before the war and many served through its entirety. [1]

With the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922, the major navies of the world scaled back their battleship programs, with numerous ships on all sides scrapped or re-purposed. With extensions, that treaty lasted until 1936, when the major navies of the world began a new arms race. Famous ships like Bismark, Prince of Wales, and Yamato were all launched in the next few years. [2]

What is a feather edge?

A term I will use when im talking about sanding is feather-edging. Say for example you have a scratch that goes down to your primer. When sanding this out, you want to sand the whole area around it as to avoid sanding a low spot in the paint where it was at. With feather edging, you want to step out all the layers of paint, primer and anything else that is there(hopefully nothing else!) A good guide to go by when feather edging is to try to sand each layer out so you can see each individual ring of primer, paint, clear, etc... You probably wont see the actual layers of paint(say the paint had 3 layers then clear) but you will want to be able to see it all. Run your hand flat across the surface to feel if its smooth, keeping it flat will make any bumps more noticeable than running a finger over it. Note, feather-edging isn't only applied to scratches, but many other things such as rock chips, its just a term used for a sanding technique.

Do bombs ever expire?

If stored properly, a conventional bomb will not loose any of its deadliness for many decades. If stored improperly, such as in a damp and moist environment, bomb casings will start to rust. Even more susceptible are the more intricate components of the bombs' fuses. The main explosive charge however, does not expire.
