Are police officers required to provide emergency first aid?

In most jurisdictions, no. The decision of whether or not to provide first aid, as well as act on most other situations, is discretionary on the part of the officer. However, most police agencies place the preservation of life and rendering of aid very high in priority. An officer who had the opportunity to render first aid in the absence of someone more qualified, but did not do so, would probably be disciplined.

What are signs of heat stroke for SABC?

Unusual behavior, abnormal mental state, and sudden collapse

If you got burnt by boiling hot tomato soup on your finger what should you do to ease the pain or help it heal faster?

First, if you have a Large blister or oozing sore you need to see a DR to get that treated.

you could end up with an infection or worse.

If you scalded yourself(red sore but no blister) I would first run cool water over the burn make sure there is no open wound. Then keep the wound cool as possible. I like to take a paper towel and get it damp and wrap it lightly around the wound. DO NOT put ice directly on a burn this can cause more damage. after the initial heat has gone down treat it like a bad sunburn, use aloe or a spray with lidocaine in it. Keep an eye out for signs of infection, if you see any red lines, lots of pus or a large blister see a doctor right away

How would you manag a casualty from suffering from heat exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion can lead to a more serious condition known as heat stroke. It is extremely important to remove a person suffering heat exhaustion from the source of heat and rehydrate them as quickly as possible. Putting cool compresses on the forehead, neck, armpits, and groin area can help to release excess heat.

If involuntary contractions of the muscle begin to occur, it is necessary to call emergency services. If there is IV trained medical personel on-hand, administering a saline solution is encouraged.

Does the ocean help heal wounds?

Well, sort of, but not much. It'd mainly depend on what your options might be. The salinity in most oceans is quite similar to the body's, which is a good thing for cellular growth. (clean)Ocean water doesn't that much in terms of bacteria either. If your options are washing a wound with water from a stagnant pond, or the sea then the ocean is certainly a better choice.

What medice is good for broken foot?

Well after you've gone to see your doctor and they confirm that it is a break depending on if it's in a cast or not there is only one thing to do. sit on your butt and let it heal. the best thing for sprains, strains, and fractures is called R-I-C-E it mean Rest Ice Compression Elevation. rest your foot, keep ice on it to keep the swelling down, keep it wrapped up in an ace bandage if it's not already in a cast, and keep it propped up. hope this helps answer your question.

Why is that cold-water drowning victims might survive prolonged periods under water?

They have laryngeal spasms. Due to the intensity of the cold water, it essentially causes their throat to close up tight, therefore there is no air or water going in, and no air or water going out. That's just the problem... What happens when you get them out? It makes opening an airway nearly impossible until their laryngeal passage opens up, and it doesn't happen instantly, it takes a while.

*** cool fact*** If an infant is choking, and you perform a finger sweep (because you can see whatever it is that is blocking their airway) if your finger, gloved or not, even barely scratches the back of their throat, their laryngeal airway with spasm and close. It's something they have no control over and will kill them. So note! When performing a finger sweep, be extremely careful, and never sweep for something you cannot see the majority of. Ideally, I recommend you not performing finger sweeps period, and simply place them belly down, perform back thrusts to help expel the object.

First aid procedures for hypoxia?

Instantly re-establish breathing in such as manner as to offset any oxygen deficit. As your question is moot regarding the cause of hypoxia, I'll touch on the most common causes: # Lack of Breathing. Commence rescue breathing ( resuscitation) instantly and continue until the victim resumes breathing on their own, you become too exhausted to continue, or you are relieved by rescue personnel. # Low Arterial PO2. Commence oxygen flow on breathing apparatus, e.g. nasal canula, mask, ambu bag if neccesary, intubation, etc. # Occluded airway. Remove the occlusion, either with your hand, or consider the Heimlich manuver. If you can't remove the occlusion, and you know how to do this without causing more harm, consider tracheostomy. # Hypoxia as a result of hypovolemia. Stop the bleeding using (in order of preference) direct pressure, elevating the limb (if it's a limb that's bleeding), pressure points and, as a last resort, tourniquet. Direct pressure can control bleeding in most cases. Note that applying a tourniquet is a dangerous procedure that should only be considered when saving a life. Once bleeding is controlled, apply other listed methods as apropriate. If you don't know these rescue procedures, ideally send two people for help and stay with the patient. If you're alone, consider which will be most likely to save the patient: staying and trying or running for help. Note that starting the patient on Oxygen may work well in accompaniment with any of the aforesaid procedures. There are many other potential causes of hypoxia, but most of these are difficult to treat in a first-aid context.

Do's and don't's in poisoning?

Do:

-Get medical help.

-Reassure the patient.

-Make sure the patient rests as much as possible. This is also important because the more he moves around, the bigger the chance of the poison getting into his bloodstream quicker (for example, if he runs around the poison will enter the bloodstream quicker and it's important to rest to reduce the chance.

-Keep a sample of the poison (eg. medicine bottle).

-Keep a sample of his vomit for the paramedics and/or doctor.

Don't (NEVER):

-Induce vomiting.

-Panic.

-Assume the person will "be fine" especially if you are sure he has being poisoned.

Can you have an allergic reaction after eating blue crabs?

You certainly can. Besides peanuts, allergies to shellfish are one of the most common food allergies (by shellfish I refer to both mollusk (oysters and clams, etc.) and to arthropods (lobster, shrimp, crab). The allergy can range from mild -- rashes and hives -- all the way up to anaphylactic shock and, in rare cases, death. You can verify this with your doctor. Depending on how strong the allergic reaction is, for extreme cases, getting this tested and verified is a good idea, as they can prescribe "allergy kits" that, in an emergency, can save your life. Or you can be very careful not to eat these animals again. Unlike peanuts, they aren't used in a lot of foods without saying so. Note that if you're allergic to blue crabs, that may mean the allergy extends to all forms of crab, shrimp, lobster, crawdads and crawfish, langostino, etc.
