Check the TFI module. It is located on the distributor.
I would check the oxygen sensor and the idle air solenoid to see if they are working properly, or buy a chep code reader for like 30 bucks and see what codes it's giving that might help track down the problem.

It could be several things-worst case is your transmission is shot. Have you checked the tranny fluid level? The transmission may just need to be serviced(new filter and fluid, easy fix. What are typical problems with Ford broncos?
== == I've been the proud owner of a '96 Ford Bronco for a little over a year now. but there are a few problems that they have. First, the front auto. hubs. its a ford problem. 2nd is the rear spring perches both of my rotted and cracked and had to be replaced. 3rd i haven't replaced it yet but its going is the fuel pump.
none there the best thing. just watch for rust!! The only problems I've encountered are with the E4OD automatic transmissions in the 92-96 models with the 351ci (5.8L) V8. I've replaced mine twice. Could be the 5.8 puts out more torque than the trans. can withstand for extended periods of time. My dad's F150 has the 4.9L inline 6 cylinder and the same transmission and his is 2 years older and has appx. 20,000 more miles than mine with similar driving histories and his transmission is just starting to go bad.
However, if you have the 5.0, then no worries. Or at least fewer worries.
Other than that the Broncos are pretty solid. I don't plan on selling mine for a long time if I can avoid it.

What is the difference between speed and average speed?
Speed is a momentary measurement. Average speed is the distance travelled in a particular journey divided by the time taken to make that journey.
If a vehicle travels forty kilometres in one hour, its average speed is 40 km h-1 (kph). That doesn't necessarily mean that the vehicle was doing exactly 40 kph for the whole hour, its speed may have varied between 0 kph and 100 kph.
Example: If a man walks 1.5 km in 15 minutes, his average speed is 6 kph. (1.5 / 0.25 = 6) If a man travels 15 km in 2 hours, his average speed is 15 / 2 = 7.5 kph. (Of course, he may have jogged at 10 kph for one and a half hours and stopped for a thirty minute picnic in the middle)
Why would the anti-lock brake lights be on?
I had this problem with my Chevy Venture van after I did work on the gas tank. I thought I might have damaged a wire. I did some research and found out more on how it worked. Anti-lock brakes work by using sensors on each wheel to measure the speed of the wheels. for a detailed explanation, check a site like howstuffworks.com What i learned said the anti-lock brake light comes on if there is a problem in the system. Mine turned out to be a disconnected plug to on of the sensors. Hope that helps. When the comes on and stays on, it is telling you that it is not operational. While you mechanical brakes and parking brake will still work, the ABS will not. There can be a multitude of possible problems. There may be a bad sensor, a bad connection as listed above, a bad harness, or worse of all a bad ABS module. Lack of brake fluid flushes seem to play a factor in the fialure of these expensive little animals. It is not uncommon to see the units costing $1500.00. I am a firm believer in Anti-lock Brakes. If I didn't have them one particular evening, I wouldn't be here typing this out today.
