You clear the code by using a code reader/re-setter or disconnecting a battery lead for a short time. However, this will not fix the problem and the error will come back. The real fix for this on most cars is to clear the egr valve and the passages used by the valve, many times at the intake manifold. Sometimes a vacuum leak or faulty egr solenoid will also cause this problem. If you have a lot of miles, it is likely clogged ports in the intake manifold where the gases cool and tend to carbon up. Not a real easy job.

Use a 10 inch adjustable wrench and rotate the idler pulley arm CCW to relieve the tension on the belt. The tensioner arm has a boss on the casting that can be used to seat the wrench. I have seen some arms with a 3/8" square hole cast into the arm to accomodate a breaker bar drive instead of having a boss with flats. Relieving the tension will allow the belt to slip off the grooved pulley.

the code is e40 ( the reason it is E40 is because if you look at the speedometer it is on 40 and the E for empty is circled in blood) and if you need to get the whole thing Examine the console in the bottom middle of the front seat

-Open the lid and take the flashlight

-Turn around to the back seat

-Examine the console in the bottom middle again

-This time you will see the back of the console, the ashtray

-Pull out the lighter and take the small key underneath

-Return to the back seat

-Click the bottom right or bottom left area of the screen to look at the backseat floor

-Examine the floormat on the right and take the knife from underneath

-Return to the backseat

-Click the ceiling area, above the rear window

-Use the knife to remove the wiring guide from the ceiling

-Go to the front seat

-Examine the glove box and use the small key to open it

-Take the batteries and electrical tape

-Combine the batteries and flashlight

-Return to the backseat

-Use the knife to cut the straps on each side of the cushion

-Click the cushion to set it aside

-Click the small dark gray area behind the cushion

-Enter "E40" on the numberpad (this can be seen from examining the instrument panel in the front seat. The E on the gas gauge is circled, and the speedometer is stuck on 40)

-Use the flashlight with batteries to see

-Break the cracked light cover on the left with either the knife, screwdriver, or hammer

-Take the key that falls on the floor

-Return to the front seat

-Examine the pedals underneath the steering wheel

-Use the screwdriver to open the panel underneath the steering wheel

-Following the wiring guide, only connect the red, blue, green, and gray wires. Use the electrical tape on each connection

-Examine the instrument panel behind the steering wheel

-Use the key in the ignition switch to turn the car's electricity on

-Return to the area with the pedals, and press the trunk release button

-Exit through the trunk

The rear half(rear ashtray) of the console has to be removed first. Then take the 4 Phillips screw holding the shifter cover out. Lift the cover towards the shift knob, you don't have to takeit all the way off. The bulb is in the small tray next to the shifter shaft. daner@copper.net

Things were slightly different in my 2000 S70 which has a center armrest with cup holders. First pry loose the cover for the handbrake and then pull the cover off the handbrake handle. The entire center housing is held in place by two 8mm bolts. These bolts are hidden under a removable panel located inside the storage box under the center armrest. When you open the armrest box you will see a small tab at the bottom toward the front. The access panel can be removed by placing a screwdriver in the tab and prying gently. The two bolts are under this panel. Once the bolts are removed the entire center console can be lifted up. It is not necessary to completely remove it. The bulb is located on the driver's side of the shift lever in a white plastic housing. science@Joyner.ws

There is a tensioner that is easily moved with a 1/2" socket or breaker bar. Release the tension, and the belt will come right off. Route the new belt around the pulleys, push down on the tensioner again, and route the belt around the tensioner pulley. A very simple job that should take no more than 5 minutes to do.

I am having sort of the same problem. My coolant light comes on after I've been driving for a while or if my car has been idling. I have checked all of my fluids and the car doesn't seem to be over heating or running hot. Any suggestions on what might cause this? My dad seems to think there is a short in the wire or the sending unit.

The low coolant sensor is a poor design and prone to failure. Get this - you have to buy the bottle to replace it, as the sensor cannot be purchased separately. The good news is, just unplug it. The light will go out and no codes will be generated. Just check your coolant level from time to time, like we all should do anyways when we check other fluids.

Your water pump may have seized up which in turn snapped your timing belt. Get that checked out before you get your engine rebuilt. That is what happened to mine.

A 2001 Ford escape differential leak is usually caused by a bad seal. Replace the differential seal. The new seal should stop the oil leak.

The whole light assembly needs to be removed. Open the rear doors. By the hinges there is an opening with 2 screws. One high and one low. These screws hold the light assembly in place. After removing the screws the light assembly will pivot out. Disconnect the electrical quick connect. You should have the assembly free from the car. Then remove 2 screws that hold the sockets in place. That will give you access to the bulbs. It really is simple once you do it. Just take care not to drop the screws.

Once you remove the two screws, as stated, be very careful or they will fall down behind the sheet metal. Then, first tilt out the side of the light closest to the tailgate until you see the light harness, then carefully keep tilting away from the tailgate and push inward. This will remove two metal clips on the light from slots in the vehicle. You will be able to see these clips as you tilt the light away.

driver's side: remove airduct that connect to your airfilter box.... then remove air/filter box and intake tube.... takes about 5 mins.... if that.

from there you have plenty of space to access both the headlight and the fog light.

Passenger side: Remove the windshield wiper snorkle and the coolant resevior.... this also take about 5 mins if that.... and it gives you enough room to access the head light and fog light.... the space is a bit more tight to work in but its still enough to get the job done.
