How can you know if the catalyc converter needs to be replased?
The leading cause of a catalytic converter failure is a bad Oxygen Sensor, or ignoring your vehicles poor running condition. So if your vehicle begins to run rough, or the CHECK ENGINE light appears, have the vehicle checked out immediately by a professional technician. Further symptoms of a faulty or failing catalytic converter may include; failing an emissions test, increased engine temperature, bucking and engine hesitation. # Here are just a few of the signs and symptoms of a plugged/dead cat: # Markedly decreased low rpm power, # Engine runs a little hotter than normal at constant cruising speeds, # Exhaust leaks near header that won't seal in spite of new gaskets, # Bucking or hesitation while accelerating, # Cat's exterior surface temp cooler near outlet.
your valvetrain most likely has ro much play in it take it to the shop have them adjust it its like fifty bucks

Why after on 2-3 days of installing a new battery the car lights will dim and wont start?
A battery is only an electrical STORAGE device; when functioning properly it stores electrical energy.
On the other hand, the ALTERNATOR produces the electrical energy to operate all of the electric components in the vehicle AND sends additional electrical energy to the battery for storage so that the starter can function NEXT time you want to start the engine.
If the alternator is not functioning properly the battery will eventually discharge. That doesn't mean anything is wrong with the battery, it just hasn't been given anything to store. Have a reputable auto parts retailer test your charging system for you.
At this point you should be suspicious of the alternator.

Answer
When you replaced the headgasket, did you have the head checked? It could be warped, causing the gasket to fail, or worse it could be cracked. I've also seen the water jackets within the block crack if it overheated to many times.

How much should a valve cover gasket job cost for a 1994 Isuzu rodeo My mechanic said about 600.00?
a '''valve cover gasket''' is not a $600.00 job it takes about 30mins tops. you could do that your self and save the cash. the valve cover is that piece that is on top of the engine, in some vehicles is the piece that has the "hole" from where you put oil in to the engine. 6 bolts tops.
now, if he meant a '''head gasket'' then yes it could be $600.00 or more.
On my 93 rodeo I had the valve cover gasket changed and it cost me $500.00. It was the labor that costs so much. The mechanic had to take a lot of stuff off that was around the gasket cover to get to and remove the cover. You may want to ask your mechanic how much of that $600 is labor costs.
If you can smell hot ATF it is probably leaking from somewhere and getting all over the exhaust. Look very carefully for any leaks. It could be dripping from the seal around the transmission pan or more commonly out the axel.

(02 civic air filter, broken screws)
First of all, you may notice that some of the screws are spinning with broken bolt holders. If this is the case then you won't be able to open the top of the air filter case. I've read a few theories about why the screws are freely spinning but the best explanation I heard from a mechanic is that Honda dealer mechanic probably over torqued it with an air tool. Anyway, if this is the case then you will have to carefully break the top or bottom screw holders to undo the screws. I would rather break the bottom because that is where things are broken. You can buy a bottom for $90 or so. Once you get the top off one way or another then replacing the filter is pretty easy. Life the old and drop a new one then tighten the screws. But if you had to replace the bottom case then undo 3 screws that hold the case to the car then carefully remove the whole case - there are 4 connecting points, one where air comes in, one where air feeds into the engine and one plug type thing that looks to be an air flow monitor, and lastly one rubber pipe that is about 3/4 inch thick, not sure what this is but this is held by a clip. You will also need to release the tightening ring (?) from the pipe that feeds air into the engine (about 3" thick). After all these steps the case should life out. Replace the bottom with a new one then reverse the steps to put the case back in to its place. The whole thing took me about 30 mins ... a real mechanic can probably do this in 10 mins.
DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!!
Good luck.
How about on a 2004 Honda Civic?
I have a 2004 Honda Civic with only 2 bolts/screws. The screws come out cleanly with a 10mm socket. However, the top of the housing will not lift off. I could pry but am afraid I may break something. Are there snaps inside that will release if I pry?
Thank you
