That depends on how you mean to "skip" a period. If you do not get your period for a month, then there could be medical reasons for that. I did leave my job without giving notice(I simply failed to return to work at my next shift-felt rather good to me that I had cut them out of my life forever) and nothing really happened to me, except that I would never ask them for a reference because I know it would not help. I was rather scared for a few days that they would bug me about what I did but they didn't--they only sent a form letter detailing that I had resigned without notice. My situation was different in that the job I had was in a field (hotels) in which I had decided to never work in again--what I have done is to not mention that I worked there and nobody has ever asked me. If I were to want to work in a hotel or related industry, things would probably be a bit different as I would have to explain myself but since I'm not, I don't worry about it.

But I worked in a place that employees were "at will" (meaning you could be fired with or without notice or leave with or without notice). Some jobs do require notice so be sure to give it if required.
