Mufflers and Tailpipes

Mufflers and tailpipes are components of an exhaust system. The tailpipes guide the exhaust away from the engine and into the muffler. The muffler reduces the noise coming from the engine through the tailpipe.

Do you need new rotors if your car shakes when you put on the brakes?

All depends on how the roters look need turning or not, or can be. Bad tires? greg

A good thing to do on brakes is go to a place that does brake repair. The big names will do a FREE inspection and tell you what is going on. It is 'safe' to do so. They usually won't do any work until authorized to. One exception is some places will tell you they are worn illegally and must be fixed (Les Schwab in the NW does this). Most don't, but remind them they are not law enforcement and tell them you'll do the job. Anyway--Sears, Firestone, Goodwrench, etc. will all give a free inspection and recc. what needs done. Sometimes you can just turn the rotors w/o new ones.

What causes a 1988 Ford Escort to backfire at startup?

What causes the check engine light to come on on a 2001 Toyota Echo?

There any many possibilities, but some of the most common are not replacing the gas cover correctly (tighly until it clicks) and the airbag sensor becomes unplugged (common after changing the oil). Make sure you're keeping up on replacing the oil, water, antifreeze, air filter, etc.

My light came on my 2001 Echo and I replaced the air filter (which I learned is not automatically changed at each oil change) and the Check Engine light would not go off. Tried this trick:

.....Also, you could: "disconnect the negative battery connection. Press your brake pedal down for 10 seconds. Reattach your negative battery connection. The computer will be reset." ......

And voilà; ready and rearin' to go !

"Turning off the warning light" seems dangerous, but it really isn't. If the problem is REAL, the light will come on again the next time it is detected. If it is only a one-time glitch, you may never see it again. If it keeps coming back, THEN you should worry...

What causes white smoke when i first start the car and shaking but after a few minutes of idling it goes away?

"White smoke" is typically nothing more than water vapor. The normal products of combustion in an internal combustion engine are carbon dioxide and water. When the engine and exhaust system are cold, the exhaust leaves the tailpipe much cooler than it was when it first burned in the engine cylinder. When that happens, the water vapor tends to merge together and condenses into the form of a white cloud. When the engine and exhaust system warm a little, the hot exhaust gas dissipates in the air before the water vapor cools, and you no longer see the condensed water vapor. In other words, the white vapor is normal when the engine is cold.
As for running a little rough when the engine is cold, many vehicles do that and it isn't a problem; but if you are concerned, you could have someone run a compression test to make certain that there are no burned valves, and you could replace the plugs/wires to make certain that you don't have a misfire situation. But for me, if it runs well once it warms up a bit, I'd tend to leave it alone. But then, it's a matter of degree. How bad is it when it's cold, and how long does it last? If it's under 15 seconds, I wouldn't worry about it.

How are the exhaust and intake valves arranged in the 3400 V6 Aztek?

intake short push rod, exhaust long push rod. put short push rod on rocker closes to intake manifold.

What causes black smoke to come out of an exhaust pipe?

RichIt means that the system is running rich, in other words too much fuel.

Try checking your air filter--make sure it is not dirty. Also check for a plugged air intake hose. Enough air is not getting into your cylinders for the proper air-fuel ratio.

What are the advantages of having dual exhaust?

The advantages of having dual exhaust, if it is a true dual exhaust, include increased gas mileage, cooler engine temperature, and more engine horsepower. However, if it is not a true dual exhaust, it doesn't matter how many exhaust ports there are, there will be no advantage.

Why does a smoke bomb emit white smoke?

Smoke from an ordinary home-made smoke grenade is a mixture of water vapour, potassium oxide, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Water vapour is white, as is potassium carbonate <a href="http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=43136799">Tyler And Nates Smoke Bomb</a><br/><object width="425px" height="360px" ><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"/><param name="movie" value="http://mediaservices.myspace.com/services/media/embed.aspx/m=43136799,t=1,mt=video"/><embed src="http://mediaservices.myspace.com/services/media/embed.aspx/m=43136799,t=1,mt=video" width="425" height="360" allowFullScreen="true" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed></object>

What causes bucking during acceleration?

Bucking during acceleration can be caused by a low fuel level. When the car is running on fumes, it is not getting a constant supply of gas which will cause it to stop and go.

How do you replace the entire muffler and exhaust pipe system on a Mercury Sable - Ford Taurus?

This is one of those times I recommend shopping around for pricing to have it done professionally.

For years I would do exhaust and mufflers myself - until I found a chain of muffler shops here in the Detroit area that was about $20 more than parts alone!!

For $20, I'm much more than willing to NOT have to deal with rusted bolts and studs and the complications that you can run into.

Doing it yourself...

  • Buy all the pipes, muffler(s), and tailpipe extensions from your store of choice

  • Start at the back end of the catalytic converter- often referred to as the 'cat' -
NOTE: converters are rarely ever needed to be replaced! You're doing the "cat-back" replacement job

  • And this is likely where you'll run into the first complication - dealing with rusted/corroded studs & nuts.
Try and get the nuts off without damaging the studs!

Lots and lots of penetrating oil like PB Blaster; propane torch to heat things up; a nut-cracker tool; nut remover tool for when the nut gets all rounded off; cutting tool to CAREFULLY slice the nut down the side

That's to name just a few ways I've dealt with those (*$&($#*&... "darned" things

  • The rest is just releasing the pipes & muffler from the hangers and pulling it all out from under the car

Exhaust systems are much easier in that the 'hangers' the pipes hang off the bottom of the care are almost always like big rubber bands! So much better than the 'old days'.

  • Assembly - you will have purchased a number of big pipe clamps to connects the parts together - pretty intuitive and straight-forward in fastening the pipes/pieces together.
Tip: don't hesitate to really crank-down on the nuts. It's actually a good thing to even crease the pipe underneath the clamp - ensures a good solid connection.

  • Muffler - likely you'll have a 'universal' type muffler - not a factory exact model. This is where you may run into the complication of the original rubber hangars not able to line-up and support the new muffler.
You may have to resort to a universal hanger, drilling a hole to mount / bolt it to and then putting the other end under one of the clamps.

TIP: because the muffler is 'oblong' or oval shaped, you'll need to position it / rotate it so as the system moves when you drive down the road, it doesn't bounce - knock up against the bottom of the car. That will quickly drive you nuts.
Have 'fun', but consider pricing this one out to be done - your TIME and effort could be saved for other projects...
