Mufflers and Tailpipes

Mufflers and tailpipes are components of an exhaust system. The tailpipes guide the exhaust away from the engine and into the muffler. The muffler reduces the noise coming from the engine through the tailpipe.

Is straight pipe exhaust illegal in VIRGINIA?

As long as you keep the catalytic converters and other factory emissions controls, there should not be a problem. If your vehicle is older than what Virgina requires to be emissions tested, you may be able to remove the Catalytic Converter and other factory control equipment.

Does white smoke from car exhaust mean blown head gasket?

yes it dose

Answer:

It Could be. If the smoke stops after the car runs for a bit, then it is only condensation that has built up in the engine or more likely, the exhaust system. If it is a continual stream of fairly heavy white smoke, then you most likely have a bad head gasket,,,,but the car should not be running very well either in most cases.

Will a cat-back exhaust system increase the performance of the car even if you keep the standard catalistic converter?

Yes u will increase the preformance, but not by much. A cat back system reduces the back preassure caused by your stock exsust pipes. Usually a cat back system consists of a large in diameter pipe that extends from your catalitic converter to the back of your car. The aftermarket pipe used is quite large. The sound you get though is quite deep and throaty. However, only if your car is heavily modified wil you notice a significant difference in preformance.

Why after you hit the reset button the check engine light is still blinking repeatedly?

There is no reset button for the check engine light. It must be reset with an OBD scan tool.

Is taking the muffler off your exhaust bad?

No it is not a bad thing. The muffler was invented to muffle the sound. The muffler does not enhance anything.

However, the muffler stops the engine being noisy and it is a LEGAL requirement to have one, if you take it off, the police will stop and fine you and your car may be crushed.

If you take the muffler off of a car is it more fuel efficient?

The answer is likely, the muffler on you vehicle has two main intentions. Being the limiting of noise and usually act as some form of catalytic converter to limit pollution. However this action limits the flow of exhaust from the engine and thus increases back pressure decreasing the efficiency of the engine. The removal of it increases the power of the engine and could in fact thus also increase fuel efficiency.

most car designeers and engineers design vehicles to use the muffler to perform well. no, or little backpressure can cause engine failure. if it makes you feel better, remove it, but 99 out of 100 times there will be NO improvement, and if there is, its not going to be anything more than .1 mpg. so you wont save any money. and in most states it is very illegal.

This cant be answered as a simple yes or no. Its possible that the result can go either way.

What is the use of pig tail in steam reformer?

To accommodate thermal expansion between reformer tubes and the outlet manifolding.

Can the inside of a muffler get red hot?

If that's going on you might want to check for vacuum leaks and make sure the engine isn't running lean.

What causes engine to sputter and smoke from the exhaust?

If the smoke is black it could be caused by a faulty fuel pressure regulator which could be causing the engine to get too much fuel.

Why does a muffler have two tail pipes from one muffler?

A cheaper option for dual exhaust without making it a true dual exhaust from the exhaust manifold/headers. Not much performance gained just appearance.

How much horsepower will headers and a cold air intake add to a B16A?

You would probably only get 5-10hp at the crank from installing both, depending on brand and other modifications.

What car has the best engine?

Corvette: Newer models, ls1, ls2, and ls3.

Camaro: Newer models, same engines for both SS

Again a question of best. Best at what? Horsepower, torque, mileage, dependability, what. I agree with the above answer when it comes to pure power for your buck. Hard to beat the small block Chevy. But when it comes to dependability and an engine that has good power and delivers great mileage then there are lots of great engines out there. It would be hard to name the best.

What are cat back exhaust systems?

The 'cat' in 'cat-back' refers to a catalytic converter, which is a device required by law in most countries to be included in cars because it reduces pollution. Cat-back systems have their converters located in the rear of the system, and their pipes are of larger diameter than most systems.

What is the price range for Corvette exhaust systems?

The price range for Corvette exhaust systems can vary depending on the condition of the exhaust system; the model of the exhaust system will effect the price range as well. The price range of a Corvette exhaust system is from about five hundred to twelve hundred dollars.

Can a turbo system be installed in a Mazda mx3?

yes, there are a few systems that can be installed, most of these systems ive seen on jdm KL-ZF v6 motors which is the 210 horse power 2.5 liter, ive also seen one on a miata motor swap. Im sure if you build your stock motor from the ground up and took it to a performance shop they would be able to make it work with your motor. It tends t be a little more difficult to find turbos made to fit the MX-3, you could find Honda and acura turbos made to fit all day. It can be done but you will have to take it to a shop specializing in performance installs.

First I'll mention that if you have an automatic, it's no, it won't last. You'll need to convert to a 5-speed for anything that you read below:

Depends if you have the V6 or 4cyl Mx-3. For the V6, the kits out there are designed for the 2.5L KL, but will bolt up to the 1.8L K8. A few people have done it, but don't expect big power. You'll make somewhere about 200hp at the wheels (you'll need to upgrade the clutch or you'll toast that too) on it and don't bother putting any work into the motor, most if and when they blow it will swap for a KL afterwards. The K8 has little to no aftermarket that improving the internals to handle more boost is very expensive. Thanks to the Probe/Mx-6 guys, there's plenty of parts out there to upgrade a KL. If you have a V6, consider swapped to the 165/170hp KLDE 2.5L motor, or the Japanese KLZE that's 198hp. Easier to do and more reliable than a turbo kit, than afterwards, just turbo it if you want more power.

If you have a 1.6L SOHC 4cyl, there are no turbo options that are availablewith the exemption of RacingMazda.com's kit. There's a few that have done their own kits, one guy is making 250hp at the wheels on it. The benefit to having the SOHC 4cyl is that it's very easy to swap to a BP/BPT, Mazda's 1.8L 4cyl, you gain 30hp in that in itself, but also, that motor is turbo happy, even came with a factory turbo option. Swap to a BP from a 323/Protege/Escort than piece together a turbo kit on your own time, or just pop in the either the 180hp GTX or 210hp GTR motors. Getting a G-series trans is recommended for the longer gears and it's strength.

For the DOHC, you can get parts from Mazda's B6T turbo 1.6 motor, bolt in, or just swap the entire motor. The BP/BPT swap is harder on this because you'll either need to change or modify the wiring harness, but it's definitely doable.

After you've read this, if you've got the idea to swapping your V6 for a 4cyl, or 4cyl to a V6, it's a chore, requires a doner car for all the parts, but it's all bolt in of course.

To the original person who replied, The *KL-ZE* is 198hp

Muffler problem do i get any ticket if their is a problem with Muffler?

You may if the noise level is too high. But that is the least of your worries. A defective muffler may cause your death or at the very least an accident. A muffler with a break or hole in it will allow carbon monoxide to enter the passenger compartment of your vehicle, especially if you are driving with the windows up. Carbon monoxide is odorless and tasteless gas that kills. This will cause you to feel sleepy and will eventually cause you to loose control of your vehicle. Get the muffler replaced ASAP.

Why would a 350 have white smoke coming out of the exhaust and firing is really off when you let off the gas it will just die and you have checked all the plugs and they are properly gapped timing?

if smoke smells like maple syrup it a head gasket could be vaccumm mod on auto trans leaking fluid in intake, pull vucumm line from trans if wet inside replace modulator worst case is a blown head gasket water into exaust port.

Do loud exhaust make vehicles faster?

No.. If anything it makes it slower if you do not have the right muffler or exhaust system on it.
