What would the problem be on a 1998 SL1 the car will crank but it will not start but will start if you spray starter fluid on it but wont stay running please help?

Starving for fuel. Start by making sure the fuel pump is running. Turn the ignition on without starting the car and listen for the pump. It should run for a few seconds and then shut off if you don't start the engine. If you hear nothing, check the fuse. If the fuse is good then it can be a defective fuel pump relay, pump itself, or on rare occasions a bad computer. If you hear the pump run and then shut off, suspect a clogged fuel filter, defective fuel pressure regulator, or an extremely weak fuel pump that is running but pumping no fuel.

before checking ur fuel system if ur not getting gas check ur fuse box under the hood i had this problem an it was the master fuse in the box in my car it was a 30 amp fuse that caused a list of problems aswell as not starting

93 prelude occosaionally won t startthen hours later starts right up?

Can you hear the fuel pump pressurize and stop when it starts normally? Listen for a whine and stop when you turn the key but do not start it. If when it doesn't start for you, listen before trying to turn it over... if you get silence, replace the main relay which is what causes the fuel pump to pressurize the system right before starting. Easy replacement but you have to get the main relay from the dealer. The older Preludes had a problem with the Main Relay due to a car's heating and cooling which developed cracks in the little solder joints on the little PC board. The relay is a little pricey (less than $150) but can be alot cheaper than a new computer. The car's computer is very reliable. Returned computers to manufacturers, claiming to be bad, were bad only one-tenth OF ONE PERCENT of the returns. That means only 1 in a thousand computers were actually defective. The technicians will blame the computer for a lot but in fact it may be a profitable charge and a way for them to get out from under the position of not knowing what is causing the problem. OR, they can replace a $60 relay and then charge for a new computer too. You never know the difference because they fix the "little" problem, charge you for a "big" problem and when the new computer is replaced...it seems to be the fix that was required.

...a small addition to the above post.

You could buy a soldering iron and fix any of the joints which are cracked or have white rings around them.

Crawl under the steering wheel, locate the relay. Pull off the orange clip, use a flathead to carefully release the grey clips from the relay itself.. See if any of the joints on the circuit board have cracks or white rings. Use the iron and a small bead of solder to repair it. If you don't have steady hands or aren't used to working with it, find someone. It's about $15 vs $60-100. It's worked for my prelude, and it's still starting reliably.

What to dew when you have slush in your engine after your cylinder head has crack?

If the head or block is cracked, it must be replaced.

It's far easier to remove the engine from a Saturn when you're replacing the head.

When water mixes with the oil, it emulsifies, and turns to a gel-like substance.

After the head is replaced, change the oil; then drive the vehicle for a couple hundred miles and change the oil again. That should clear up the problem with the oil.

But make certain that the head truly is cracked before you throw it away and get a new one.

Usually it's not a cracked head, but instead it's typically a blown headgasket. A head can warp when an engine overheats, and when the head warps, the headgasket will blow. You'll need to have the head resurfaced if the head is warped.

What are the signs of a bent valve?

IF there is no compression in one or more cylinder, you either have a bent valve, a burned valve or a bad head gasket. In any case, the head must be removed if you plan to repair the engine.

Why is my 1999 Saturn smoking white smoke from exhaust?

When an exhaust pipe is cool, the exhaust will start to allow water vapor to condense. If the exhaust is white you're seeing a vapor cloud; it's normal and unavoidable.

Once the engine and exhaust are warm, the vapor cloud should stop.

How do you replace rear brake calipers on a 1995 Saturn SC2?

The rear calipers have not to much difficult than the front.

-Remove the brake line being sure not to loose the bolt and washers. Be sure to have a bucket to catch the brake fluid.

-Remove the parking brake line. Do this by pushing the tabs (two of them) in and pushing the line back through the bracket.

-Remove the caliper pins.

-Remove the caliper

Installation is the reverse. Be sure to bleed ALL the brakes after the new caliper is in. Start in the passenger side rear, driver side rear, passenger side front, and then finally the driverside front.

The motor on your 1999 Saturn sc2 is jumpy in idle how do i fix it?

If your problem is identical to most Saturns where at idle the idle vacillates a couple of hundred RPM and most recently I had an occurrence where the temp gauge would jump along with the tach, your problem is most likely in the temperature sensor located beneath the thermostat. It's an easy fix to replace and takes maybe ten minutes. Disconnect the air intake module at the throttle body and unclip the other end from the air cleaner. Follow the directions in your repair manual and you'll be a happy camper and save about 200 bucks from having a garage do it.

Where are the 2002 Saturn fuses?

2 places. They will be located under the hood near the battery on the right hand side, in a black box. The second spot will be drivers side, lower left side in a small kick-panel labeled fuses.

What color of antifreeze to use 2000 Saturn sl2?

Where is the thermostat located on a 1997 Saturn SL?

Follow the top radiator hose to the engine, what that mounts to is the thermostat housing, remove this and there is your thermostat. * ** *** **** ***** Actually, on my 1997 SL2, the thermostat is on the bottom radiator hose.

I would check the "Saturn Thermostat Pictures" link below, which also has installation and removal instructions.

How do you replace an ignition switch in a 1998 Saturn SL2?

Is should not be that difficult. Pickup a service manual, I believe that the Saturn uses GM's Passlock Anti-theft system. If you are having problems with the ignition or the car starting, it is more than likely thie ignition cylinder lock. This is a common problem with GM vehicles. This also should not be all that difficult to replace. There is a bit more to it than replaceing the ignition cylinder lock you will have to reprogram the system to read the new key unless you have the new lock keyed to match the original key.

Where is the O2 sensor located on a 1999 Saturn SC1?

There are 2 o2 sensors One is in the exhaust manifold and has 1 wire off of it The other one is under the vehicle behind the catalytic converter It will have 4 wires coming iout of it The plug for the sensor is attached to the engine subframe behind the steering rack

How do you change the dash lights on your 2002 sc2?

Remove the trim ring from around the dashboard cluster. There may be a few other pieces in the way, but you can work through it.

The dashboard assembly should be held in place with snaps or screws, but in any case it should pull straight out.

Once you have the assembly out, notice the bulb sockets on the back. I recommend that you replace them all at the same time to avoid having them fail at annoying intervals.

Note that the dashboard assembly plugs in to the vehicle, so make certain that you align it perfectly when you're putting it all back together. If it isn't plugged in properly and completely, SOMETHING won't work right.

Where is the oil pump located on a 1997 Saturn Twin Cam?

The timing chain cover IS the oil pump. You need to remove the dampener pulley (that's the pulley that drives the serpentine belt) then you can remove the timing chain cover/oil pump.

Why does your sunroof on a 99 Saturn SC2 get stuck?

Just a suggestion but maybe the track is dirty and needs to be cleaned

with the satun sc series, the sunroof is moved by 2 plastic arms, over time they get brittle and break (it should have had that as a recall) but most power windows are the same way you will more then likely have to go online and order a pair (there is a company who makes them out of aluminum that are really nice and fairly cheep about 1 hour to fix

Your 1999 Saturn SL2 is overheating do you need to flush out your radiator fluid?

Most likely the coolant sensor is bad......The sensor has probably cracked and leaked into the harness, causing the harnes to corrode. Very common problem Check the sensor first!!!!!

Not neccessarily it sounds more like it could be a thermostat problem, water pump not pumping at capacity I mean there could be a clog but highly unlikely would'nt life be grand if all our automobile problems were simple and cheap ones head gasket problem is another culprit but start small and work your way to the big problems the cooling system is a pretty simple system aside from the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor which I have seen cause problems that you would think it could have nothing to do with give that baby a once over as well

---------------

^^^^NOT a thermostat issue. Thermostats are designed to be open when/if they fail. The car would always be cool if the thermostat was bad. Also, because the ECTS has NOT been replaced the gauge can NOT be used as an accurate temperature reading. The PCM uses the sensor to control the fan power. If this sensor is bad then the PCM will not turn the fan on, thus allowing the car to over heat. Replace the ECTS ASAP and move on from there if the issue is not solved!

a thermostat stuck open in fail safe mode WILL cause overheating because the coolant free flows and doesnt have enough capture time in the radiator to let the fans cool, hence the degree ratings on the thermostat for various climates.give good info or dont give it.a removed thermostat or a free flow stuck open will not allow enough cool time for coolant.stopping flow give the radiator and fans the gradual cooling time needed to accomplish this.
